wild thing:
Hi Steve
Re the photo you posted of Downings foden, yes it was their first crane wagon & the driver operating it in the picture is Dave Glover a well respected truck salesman now selling Mercs for Enza, but he cut his teeth selling proper trucks for Beechs, Alan sturge gave me the picture a few years ago so I could make a model of it for Dave’s birthday, so I made 2 one for Dave & the other for Alan & yes when I have time I will make No3 for me.
Looking at your posts I must know you as I originated from Mountfords & as you know Jack Hartley was our transport manager till they closed in 81/2
when he moved to Alcocks till they also finished.
Cheers Duls
Well respected salesman !!! That’s pushing it a bit Duls !!!
Was out with him last week, not seen him for a few years, had a good chat - looking to semi retirement now ?
Got a few cracking photos of Bob Carolegees look a like somewhere - will dig them out
Regards Ant
Hiya…mastermind question…what was the chaps name who had a F88 and the first F12 around Stoke. he was a polish chap
with a white cabbed lorry and a huge Hiab…atlas Crane on the trailer. he only did one off jobs like moving lathes and machinery.
Sparlinski comes to mind but that,s not correct…its been driving me mad since this forum started its just as his mane has come
into my head…never had any dealings with the guy i just remembered him. and he was a stoke outfit. cheers John.
Hi Ant
So the rivalry continues then ? Hows tricks Mate are you still contributing to the S&L fleet ? Its mayhem down our kids yard on Saturdays when they all arrive for service & bling 1st new one had its first bump last week & Pepsi has had some proper stick. Lee didn’t speak to him for a week .
See you soon Ant
John
The guy you are on about was Joe ( the pole ) Zedlinski When I had my 1st 88 on Mountfords he gave me a pair of brand new 30in air horns still in the box just for helping him out now & again. He was a big Mate of our transport manager Jack Hartley & Arthur Mountford, his trailer was an x Mountford trombone & he fitted sides & the crane at the side of his bungalow up brookehouse lane . no sending them in the body shop then Duk, just get the job done!!!
All the best Mate
Duls

Herman Tideswell was always an AEC man.
Like Vic Wild was always a Gardner man,ERF’s or Atki’s.
That is until Gardners had just brought out the 240 and Vic Wild was in the process of updating the fleet when Gardners went on strike, this would be 1973-74.
The next 240 Atki was going to have been mine, but I had to wait.
Then, one Sunday afternoon,Vic was mowing his lawn when he heard the unmistakable sound of a Gardner 240,and saw one go past,in Herman Tideswell’s colours!
On the Monday morning Vic rang Gardners up and wanted to know why an AEC fleet owner was able to get a 240,when an established Gardner user had to wait.He told Gardners they could shove their 240’s where the sun don’t shine, and a week later he bought a brace of DAF 2600’s.
I had one and I’m not sure if the young John Taylor didn’t have the other one.
The expression Chalk and Cheese come into play here!
Hi bestbooties,
I’ve been reading this Stoke thread from top to bottom as I remember most of these firms from the 70s/80s.
You mentioned you had a brand new FT2600 at Jack Wilds VVT 554L & he’d bought 2, the other wasn’t VVT 714L was it by any chance, because my Grandad & his mate ran a few lorries in the early 70s & bought this FT2600 Daf 2nd hand about 78-ish & I don’t have any pics of it.
My grandads colours were yellow & red, but this came blue with a white stripe, & stayed like that for a year or so til it was resprayed !
There is a pic of VVT 714L on bubblemans thread, I’m sure it’s in Wilds colours
Cheers

Tipping with one of Terry Yoxalls in westbury !
Still one of the smartest brown liveried firms.
Very similar to Armitts, was there any connection ?

I’m not sure of the reg of the other 2600, I think it was driven by John Taylor the younger, who I believe is no longer with us.

Yeah I thought I’d seen on here that young John had passed away, he was a nice lad, as was his dad, a former Geordie miner.
Hi, just to say Turner brothers of foundry garage Bucknall was started by my great grandfather John Turner as cartier. With horse and carts. The firm was left in equal shares to John Turner the eldest son Ralph turner the second son and Albert Turner the youngest son. As stated in other posts the firm eventually was bought out by Albert and he put his son in laws in management, the name eventually became Turner Roadways.
A lot of men including my father John Turner a mechanic and driver worked there. Mick Matthews loader handyman. Ben Cheadle, Brian Cheadle, George Ravinscroft, Len dale. Harry Dale, harry Drummond and many more I can remember. Howel young was Ralphs son in law worked in the office.
Trust this is of interest.

Here’s one somebody just posted on facebook
hiya you see the Baskervilles AEC a pal of mine had an AEC the very same pained blue with a black chassis and belonged
for the first year of its life to a Demolishion company from Audley or Audlum any idea of the company the lorry is NBF 92P
still on the rally scene. John Richards was the owner theres a photo of somewhere on TN looking new in David Hopkins green.
This photograph of Baskerville’s AEC is one of mine (Bill Clowes) posted in Picasa albums a few years ago. I don’t mind anyone copying my photos but why crop off the legend on the bottom containing all the info as to what where and when.

There has been an interesting article in our local paper recently about the firm Birkett Billington and Newton which was a firm of brass founders.
