That’s a cracking photo of Harrisons ERF, I used to pass their depot when I was visiting my sister in law who lived in Sunnyfield Oval at Milton some years ago, Regards Larry.
Ref.harrisons , mum married ( very briefly ) one of there drivers , around 1985 /86 , had many happy memories of riding in them old erf 's . Can distinctly remember sitting in class at primary school , at around 3.20 in the afternoon seeing a Harrison’s motor pulling up to pick us up . Our school was st.maria goretti on Aylesbury road , bentilee . Having driven artics myself now for a few years that would of been no easy task . Many happy memories of playing around the trucks , strangely , I can remember a ‘smell’ that u just don’t get with new/modern trucks. . I can remember going down there yard after being picked up or taken out , for some reason if someone can help was there an ice cream place nearby . I can remember there was always a van about ■■? Them old erf s was the main reason I chose to go into driving …

hiya… Deano was a tyre fitter at Kennings. he passed his test and did the odd load for Harrisons, when Harrisons built
that 8 legger.( Ex british salt) Dean drove it. Harrisons bought it with no engine box or body they had a not so good unit
and made a good 8 legger brick waggon…Dean had a mate who lost his life changing a tyre not far from jct 15 it upset
him bad at the time. as soon as a job come up he got out of the tyre job. he must ok because if he leaves somewhere
he goes back another day, only to leave again…good lad Deano. his dad was a driver.
John

My dad Roy Phillips used to work for Blue Dart, on nights, out of Newcastle under Lyme. We used to go with him on school hols . I remember having to hide in the transit before sneaking to the cab on the yard, then sitting on his knee down the motorways and steering, while he pretended to be asleep . When 2 of us went with him in the summer, it was always me that had to sit on the hot engine hump in the middle of the cab.
He also worked for B.S Haulage near cheadle, then eventually got his own unit and tanker pulling sand and cement.
Those were the days, I loved it!!
i come of that ex knows exex Alan Brown ERF… PER715J…by the way 73 mph… in 1978… its a wounder the windows are not still steamed up
today… i had a EX sammy Jones A series after
PER with a lush sleeper…hen coat…with a 8LXB under the bonnet… theirs a photo of her on the earlier pages. when Harrisons refirbed a second
hand lorry you d think it was new… new rubber mats mud flaps new tyres new wheel trims…it was a brilliant job but we got a transport clerk
so i left…maybe a mistake but thats life
John
I had a ex Harrison’s b series on Alcocks John , day cab with a rolls in it, pulled like a good en only did about 58 but would do it all day long,it was still in their colours, I could of gone in on a sat morning and painted it they said if I wanted, we used to call it the shed with no name
is that the Alcocks who run a few ERFs then cut down to a ford d 1000 and later a ford cargo they was running from behind the
pot kilns on Uttoxeter road Longton. there was a driver there for years with purple coloured lenses in his specs.i think they run a
B series 6 legger at one time. if thats them i used to collect bags on pallets for that Colas i worked for at Chester.
John
Yes that was reg alcock with the little truck and the bloke your thinking of was dave butcher I think. He was reg’s partner he had an erf 6 wheeler they run off longport station for snowchem sadly dave recently passed away of a heart attack. We had loads of ERF tractor units mostly ex Guinness and loads of 8 wheelers the only 6 wheeler I can remember was a reiver that Roy alcock drove. We ended up in the old iveco garage up sneyd hill.
I’m sure. You. Asked me about downings brick lorries photos and Alan sturge posted this on facebook today a brill photo
hiya …thats a nice photo Steve. the electric cranes was good they seemed smoother than Hiabs and Atlas cranes.
is that a downings lorry do you think or a contractor with downings name on it. Downings was pale blue and a white top
half of the cab in my days before Steetley come along in Cream.
John
I can’t remember seeing any this colour like you I can only remember the blue and white ones with GHD on with Downing going through it could be before my time though as I’m only a pup at 50 spent loads of time there as a kid they had some nice motors. They went back to Fodens when the fleetmaster/haulmaster come out and they had a 4 wheeler a Seddon can you remember that?
Hi Steve
Re the photo you posted of Downings foden, yes it was their first crane wagon & the driver operating it in the picture is Dave Glover a well respected truck salesman now selling Mercs for Enza, but he cut his teeth selling proper trucks for Beechs, Alan sturge gave me the picture a few years ago so I could make a model of it for Dave’s birthday, so I made 2 one for Dave & the other for Alan & yes when I have time I will make No3 for me.
Looking at your posts I must know you as I originated from Mountfords & as you know Jack Hartley was our transport manager till they closed in 81/2
when he moved to Alcocks till they also finished.
Cheers Duls
