Lance has this lorry always been a white cab what colour chassis…come on you stoke lads did ANC have a fleet
of 12s…now how about Bailey,s the red ones he has the Scania now…how many of you remember the football
hooligan pinching his wendy house and going on the rampage round Hanley i think there was 15 or 20 smashed police
cars and some shops got wrecked.
John

Definitely wasn’t one of Jeff Bailey’s - The last “big” cab Volvo’s were C-registered 6x2 F10’s (my dad drove one), which were then followed by the FL10’s one of which as you rightly recall escaped one evening! It did get repaired and put back to work though.

Hi 3300John,

Not me I’m afraid - Biggest regret was never taking up the offer of fully paid for lessons when the opportunity presented itself many years ago. You live and learn!

Spent all my time at Bailey’s (via my dad), from the Gardner powered ERF days through to the invasion of the Wendy House’s!

Hi, anyone remember Mawby’s used to run from Burslem subbed for Brits

3300John:
Hiya the chap i knew who worked at Knight and Riley was a friend of a friend. this chap was a quiet cockney
but was a rouge in disguise…he’d done a couple of trips to Italy in a FFK bmc(about 1969)then got a new Commer
(might have been a maxiload)it had twin headlights. on his way home he come across another chap (Italian)with a
damaged truck the same model (Commer) this cockney sold the front o/side. the lights bumper mudwing and door
to this chap. anyhow the lorry got back to the uk and was put into a garage for repair.(half the cab missing)
the cockney told Knight and Riley someone had run into him and he’d taken the damaged parts off for safety
Longton told the driver to make his way home. he did he called a taxi…£35 in 1969. maybe 2 weeks wages.
so another driver is going to Italy. he sees this Commer a bit knocked about with a new Knight and Riley front corner
and door (still with Knight and Riley stoke on Trent written all over it)
the chap never painted it out…that was the end for the cockney driver, he was up the road without a truck.
John

My next door neighbour drove for Knight & Rileys about 1966, his name was Ken Quoroll. Does anyone remember him ?
He was at the Newland Street depot in Shelton, and also drove for Staffordshire Farmers, also in Shelton.
Tragically, he died at a very early age, whilst waiting for his wife to collect him from hospital after heart surgery. John

Longton Crane Hire’s yard is M-Way now isn’t it?

Before I retired I was in engineering with my brother, we were kiln builders based in Cobridge and we used Longton Crane Hire a lot for our big lifts, either transporting new equipment from our yard or moving equipment from pot banks for export or relocation. This was up until I retired eleven years ago.
Shortly before I retired Longton bought a new crane, something like a 200 tonner, biggest crane in Stoke at the time, when they were practicing with it in their yard and had the jib on maximum height, you could see it from miles around.
I have many pics of Lontgon Crane Hire in action, I will dig some out.
We used the big crane when we installed some ex Portmeirion kilns into Burleigh pottery at Middleport, requiring a big crane as we had to lift from the car park over some buildings through the roof of another, we had the Sentinel there taking pics, I did have one copy of that I’ll try and look out.

I have found this pic from The Sentinel newspaper at the time we did the big lift with Longton’s new crane as it was then.
Somewhere I have some pics of the complete vehicle, but this shot for the newspaper just wanted to show how high we had to lift from the car park, over a two story building and in through the roof of the room where the kiln was going to be installed.

Hi, anyone remember Mawby’s used to run from Burslem subbed for Brits

That was my dad. He ran a fleet doing continental, Italy until early 2000s then France and doing bricks for Steetley/Redland for many years. Finally closed the doors on it 4 years ago and now works for Carlsons driving car transporters.

Those were good days running Italy for Brits, later went onto work for an importer/ exporter doing groupage

I remember Deano. Started on the 8 wheel Foden brick truck then went onto the Iveco Turbostar artic doing bricks down south and returning with wood from tilbury. He did do Italy a few times when the bricks went slow. Good guy from what I can remember. Must have worked for the old man round 89. I was about 12 at the time. If I remember correctly he did another stint with my dad a few years later but could be wrong.

hiya… Deano was a tyre fitter at Kennings. he passed his test and did the odd load for Harrisons, when Harrisons built
that 8 legger.( Ex british salt) Dean drove it. Harrisons bought it with no engine box or body they had a not so good unit
and made a good 8 legger brick waggon…Dean had a mate who lost his life changing a tyre not far from jct 15 it upset
him bad at the time. as soon as a job come up he got out of the tyre job. he must ok because if he leaves somewhere
he goes back another day, only to leave again…good lad Deano. his dad was a driver.
