This photograph of Baskerville’s AEC is one of mine (Bill Clowes) posted in Picasa albums a few years ago. I don’t mind anyone copying my photos but why crop off the legend on the bottom containing all the info as to what where and when.
Hiya come on you clayheads.its years since i was up Hanley …wheres that AEC parked as i know or seen the street… is it huntbatch street
or just across from the church on the inner ringroad is it hilchurch st where Barclays bank is…i think i can remember going past that paint shop
going to collage in 1966 so it must be just off a main route through Hanley towards Shelton
John
John,
According to the A-Z of Stoke, Stanton Road is just off the A50 at the Meir, instead of going through the tunnel, go up to the roundabout, turn right as if you were going up Weston Road towards Meir Heath and it’s the first on the right.
Hiya Ian never read the second photo saying where the photo was taken. i knew it was near a main drag but as said thought it was in Hanley
thanks for coming back with the info…
have you no info who the demolition people was in Audley or Audlem who had john richards AEC… its in your area. i can t even thing of a
demolition firm in that area…i thought five towns and Baskerville along with Rafferty for chimneys had all the Stoke demolition area work
I remember Bates up near Beresford,s they was builders but had some RBs i wounder how they moved them around but that,s ■■■■ lane not audley

The flints were loaded on the old a2 near to the Merry Chest cafe, and they called the trailers flint boxes. The flint/cobbles came to the stoke area to be crushed and used in the pottery/and tile industry.davey,s used to do most of them i can remember when they came up through commercial road near Bethnal Green them old Gardner 240,s smoking away but sounded mint

Barry Davey, Hilda’s son, is manager at Beech’s, used to be ERF agents on Leek Road Hanley, but are now MAN agents at the side of the A500 in Stoke.

While Davey’s were doing the flints, my old firm Vic Wild was doing the china clay out of Cornwall, but both firms had similar trailers, sided flats, not tippers. This was in the days when a round trip to Cornwall was a weeks work and your Saturday morning job was shovelling off your 20 tons!

Looks like Tunstall High St to me. Before they knackered it up.
A lot of smart motors in the Potteries and good coach painters.Doug Wild of Vauxhall Street in Longton. His sign writer was a chap called Sam Davies and I saw him doing some Johnie Walker’s vans.I don’t think he did spray motors. In the late 60’s we took our motors from Derby and he painted a short wheelbase Transit for £29. Inside and out.We got in touch with him through Albert Hardacre from Whitacres from Hanley.I remember they used to convert a Ford 4D to forward control.I forget names as I’m 78, but there was a chap at Goldenhill who did some for us ,and of course I think you can often know where the motors come from for their signwriting. We got in touch with Ken Flannagen from Tean us Millmoor who again aren’t going anymore.

Hi Tony, going slightly off topic but you mentioning coach painter’s reminds me of my apprenticeship at a BMC commercial dealer. Everything was painted with a brush, we fitters used to remove all the cab glass including windscreen and rear windows for the two painters (Frank George and Pete Waters) so that the steelwork could all be painted and then refit it afterwards. Then the writing would be applied, often with gold leaf, and all freehand, fascinating to watch, then varnished over the top. It never faded and lasted for the life of the vehicle, must have been expensive to do even in the 60’s. Those times will not come around again I doubt!
Pete.
