Margret Pilsworth

Arthur Hubbard pictured with the ERF and AEC worked for a guy called Pilsworth who ran two 4 wheeler BMC [zb] before moving to Brown’s in 1965
He was based in Haxey at the top of Haxey Carr Lane. I know it is a long time ago but I went to school at John Leggots in Scunthorpe the 50’s and I think
there were some pupils from Epworth called Pilsworth but I cannot remember their christian names.

regards Big Al

hello, the guy called Pilsworth was my dad who was a haulage contractor in Haxey until a short while before his death in 1979.Some of his customers went on to George Nightingale. His name was Albert and I am his eldest child called Margaret. I often went to Doncaster market and to London in the lorry and the sugar beet factory at Brigg. My brother Stephen went in the lorry when he was old enough and sometimes my sister Pauline. Some other hauliers from that time were Thomlinsons, Robinsons. Snowden, Poskitts? Ken Lane. I remember Arthur Hubbard and his wife and two girls.
Dad bought his lorries from Newark Road Garages and one was on a stand at the Lincolnshire Show. Must dig out a few photos from those days. Regards Margaret

Nice photos Steptoe, and now I think about it Browns weren’t green,I think Greaves and Lamming were though.
Must be an owd age thingy.
That Scammell looks well with the tri-axle trailer :sunglasses:

TH Browns and Greaves & Lamming were both originally Green, Browns were Green with Silver chassis and tanks, G & L were Green with Red chassis. Browns had several colour schemes over the years and also many vehicles painted in customers livery like Tioxide, SCM Chemicals and Knauf and was also the parent company of other names like Plover Transport, Mariner Oil and Mariner Gas.

The Green Scammell highwayman was my Dads truck, parked outside his “Weekend residence” on Withern Road Grimsby. They had that much trouble from the rear steer on that tri-axle trailer that it was eventually welded up!

Don’t know who has put the copyright on the Scammell picture but i guess that as I have the neg for the picture that the copywrite probably belongs to me!

I’ll put you guys some pictures up as soon as i work out how to do it.

steptoe:
T H Browns were a Grimsby firm, ran Leylands years ago and then Scanias,in fact I think they were Scania agents.Another Grimsby firm was Greaves and Lamming, both firms did a lot of bulk fertilizer for Fisons. And I think you are right Nigel, green livery, both of them.

I seem to think TH Browns were blue with yellow signwriting. Regards, Haddy.

TH Browns were from Grimsby, and painted blue with a yellow roof for years, but before that they were apple green and originaly from Waltham just south of Grimsby.

This scammell has a Grimsby registration and is pulling a rear steering tri axle. (Boden I belive)

A 6x4 Albion from their early days in Waltham

and the later orible blue and grey livery

T H Brown were originally from Waltham near Grimsby.

Then they moved to Garth Lane Grimsby before moving to Pyewipe Grimsby in 1968 to present.
You can see the Leyland Beaver is parked in the same Street as the Scammell Highwayman as the Leyland
gave way to the Scammell as my dads “Office”

The Blue and Yellow era

The Blue and grotty Grey era.

And the final change was to the White over Blue

I can’t remember if I posted this but to save me trawling through the pages I got a lift in a Greaves and Lamming LAD Octopus about 0200 hrs one Monday morning from Stoke Ferry to near Brandon when I were int RAF at Feltwell Norfolk. There was two of them, running into Kent from Grimsby with bulk fertilizer from Fisons.

Very nice pics , the Leyland is a Badger pulling a BTC four-in-line the badger was fast but had poor brakes , the BTC had also bad brakes !!! a dodgy combo for certain , could have 17 ton load legal ! , but Greaves and Lamming never had any 8 wheelers or did much Fisons work , it would have been TH Brown`s Octipus and the Mammoth Mager or Scammell Rautmann going to Cliff Quay Ipswich i think so , Kent was A16 down to A1 at Norman Cross and through London

One of Brown’s Octopus pre registration outside Ford & Slater Grimsby

And here’s one of an old AEC

2 more octopus pictures.

Really nice to see the pictures of Browns thank you . Were Ford and Slater in Macauley street then ? regards Geoff

You are very welcome Geoff.
Ford and Slater were in Macauley St then, yes. Later moved to Estate Rd 1 Pywipe. When Ford and Slater closed down in Grimsby, three of the former employee’s set up as Truck Services on Estate Rd 8 later moving to bigger premises on Estate Rd 2.

Can remember F and S moving to Pyewipe and Truck Services starting up . I think Dave Barrick was one of the founders , regards Geoff

That’s right Geoff, Dave, Cliff Perrin and Ken ___? Cliff was my brother in law.

It was Ken Webster at Truck services he had a couple of brothers who were owner drivers and another one who drove for Stones at Keelby . We used to do the repairs for Lionel Webster , his favourite saying was " the first expense is always the least so lets do a good job " and it was a pleasure to do his work regards Geoff

Aye,I don’t know why I put Kent, there was two of them with LAD Octopussies and they were going into Suffolk somewhere,Ipswich would be right. I could have sworn it was Greaves and Lamming but must have been T H Brown.

Second that, some nice pictures. My old man worked for Browns from 1951 in Waltham right through to 1980 when they where on Pywipe. I did thousands of miles with him in there lorries as a kid.

Although not actually hauliers as such but grain merchants: Padley’s and Wareings of Sleaford.

The name escapes me but the hauliers from Gainsborough with Blue & White Roadtrains and Scanias who I am sure are still in operation!

CSL from Scunthorpe who used to carry steel out of Scunthorpe steel works.

Bradshaws of Gainsborough ?
