Old companies in lincolnshire 1980's - 1990's

A few from the Boston area that I can remember:

I’ll start with the obvious ones, my father’s companies - R.D.Platt (1970s and up to about 1980) and later Platt of Boston (mid-80s and folded after his death in 1990). He operated out of a yard at my grandmother’s place at Hilldyke, not far from the Pied Bull pub.

In the 1970s, as R.D.Platt he ran a few Bedfords (either TKs or KMs) - all rigids, cage-sides, with at least one running with a trailer too - I remember him doing market work with these. He had a Guy Big J at some point, then an F86 6 wheeler rigid flatbed that he used for hauling a fridge container to & from Pitlochry for George Hull - that would have been 1977 or so, and I think he did some European runs in it too. He then bought an F89 tractor unit, followed by an F7 and an F10 and did general haulage as well as some market work with them.

I know that in the very early 80s (80/81) he ran a tipper trailer as he got some subbing work shifting materials for the airfield hardening work at Coningsby. I think there was a DAF & a Transconti in the fleet around this time too.

Some point around 80/81 the company ceased trading (not sure exactly when or why, my parents divorced about this time).

At some point he was working as transport manager for Marshalls at Butterwick, then started up again with his own fleet as Platt of Boston.

In this fleet he ran a a fleet of artics - an FL7, an FL10, a DAF3300 (3-axle blue one), an Iveco or two, and a Leyland curtainsider rigid (can’t remember who it was bought from, but on a run to Brighton market one night someone thought it’d been blown over in the 87 hurricane under previous ownership) and possibly a couple of others. From the late 80s (87ish onwards) he did produce haulage, lots of work to Basildon, Paddock Wood, Brighton & Worthing - mainly curtainsiders but also a couple of flatbed trailers too. I did a lot of handballing of tates around then…

I’ve got no photos of the trucks, he kept hold of them and as I understand it they were trashed after he died. If anyone’s got any, please post 'em up, I’m looking for references to build a couple of models…

A few of the drivers I can remember:
Harold Ellerby - died a few years ago
Pete (Smith?)
Trev
Scottish Bill

There’s bound to be more I remember after some more coffee…

I used to work for J Bradshaw & Sons out the Sturton depot, started on the 4 wheelers doing the bakeries with flour before hopping up to the artics. Company trivia, established 1885 and finally they have a website, don’t think it’s been up for all that long either.
The last motor I had was a 3 axle 80 series Daf, H502 HAV, it finished up in British Sugar at Newark as a shunter, gutted when I found out they had sold it and how little it went for.

First firm I worked for was Gainsborough Express (didn’t last long before jumping ship).

There are a few pics of Bradshaws motors in a Gainsborough flickr group, nice shot of a line up of motors at Marshalls via the link;

Great photos, there are also some photo of their N12 on here somewhere.

I stumbled onto this page when searching for Parkers, my dad, worked there for years, I spent most of my childhood with my Dad in various Parkers lorries, I even had a Parkers knitted jumper! Can remember a big Renault 340 that my dad had D749 WDO I think it might have been? Also a Renault rigid, an ERF E10 that he had later on before he left as well?

Dad always says they were the best driving years of his life!

Here’s a photo of me and him together in front of his MAN, Oh and apparently I once kicked the handbrake off in that Renault 340 in Southampton once! Whoops!

Hiya Pete
i worked at Parkers most likely knew your dad i worked there as a kid after school for years then ended up driving for them my motor was a renualt major 340 C271 UJL. You know your dad was right it was the best job i have ever had … i know other drivers would call us Roger antique roadshow because of the age of most of the fleet but even though most of the fleet was old and we worked like mad the wages were really good and i was earning more then than i do now… I was young a silly and was as cluthy as hell there couldnt get enough and Roger Parker made sure he kept the work coming in at me. If i remember correctly Kieth Goddard drove the motor you speak of and when it was new … but it was a long time ago now since The job sadly went. I have been looking for photos of parkers trcks for years now so am over the bloody moon to see the photo you posted … just an idea wy dont you post it on bubblemans scrapbook thread im sure it will be aprreciated by all …once again thanks
stu

There was a fantastic article in Commercial Motor around 1980 about Machins.

This was my third lorry, this picture was taken the day I bought it, still in Hauton’s livery.

Scania27:
and that was the end of that FH lol

I know Mick Lowe has moved on from Cemex just wondering if Mick has any photos of Rugby coloured trucks

Hi, Philybob

Some good pics. of Eddies Transport ,I wonder how many of the old gang are around now.
Off the cuff I remember Mick Waller, Nige Smith, (I know he’s retired ) Big Ken , Bruce, worked alongside them running out of Cemsave.

Cheers Bassman

Great pics Bobtail, even that old Browns livery seems a distant memory now, whole name will soon be long gone with the likes of Machins, Broncos etc

I think there is a few pictures of H.E. Musgrove lorries on this thread but does anyone have pictures of other Bourne/Deeping/Stamford based firms or a couple of firms from Stamford but just across the border (C.S. Ellis and P.C. Howard)?

Good to see the DAFS of C.S. Ellis from just across the Lincs/Rutland border behind the Garns Renault, think one of them may be my Brother’s old motor.

Incidentally Garns still have at least one of the older Renaults on the road, an R385 Turboliner. Thought I had stepped back to my youth when I saw it turn up with a couple of pallets for where I work a few weeks ago.

Does anyone have any photos of Johnsons of Claxby? They and consolidated Land Services used to run out of the plate mill at Scunthorpe. I know Johnsons are still running as I regularly pass a tipper.Anyone know much about Rowlands who ran/run out of Singleton Birch?

If you go onto Flikr, and look through VRLH’s photo sets, he’s got loads of Johnsons and CLS pics
