mushroomman:
Of course Wheel Nut, Denby’s . I am surprised that nobody has mentioned them before.
I once loaded from an old airfield in Lincolnshire for Italy although I am not sure exactly where it was can anybody remember it.
If you came out of Lincoln heading north on the A15, you passed R.A.F. Scampton on the left and then after a few miles you turned left and headed into the countryside. I can remember this old airfield ( although I can’t remember seeing a runway) only having about three hangers, one of them was half full of bales of cloth from Courtaulds. I only saw one guy working there with a forklift who I think worked for Denby as there was a red and white sign on the gate saying Denby Warehousing. There were no other trucks around as it just seemed that this one guy ran the place on his own. I have looked on Google Earth and there are a few possibilities but did anybody else tip or reload from this place or do you know the place that I mean .
While we are in Lincolnshire can anybody remember the name of the company that were on another old airfield who made similar buildings to Portacabins. I think that they were somewhere near the Gainsborough area.
Regards Steve.
Was it Sturgate or Ingham Steve,Ingham had grass, not concrete strips, just north of Scampton and Sturgate was near Gainsborough? There was also Wickenby and Dunholme Lodge. I was at Scampton just before demob in 1968 and there were a lot of old WW2 airfields in that area.Hemswell was further up and Faldingworth was (maybe still is) a nuclear storage site.
Have Fosters of Langworth been mentioned, near the level crossing on the A158 between Wragby and Lincoln?
There were quite a few industrial sites, former airfield off the A15 between Bishop Grotesque college and Scampton / Caenby Corner.
I am sure Denby had a warehouse on the same airfield as Chafer Liquid Fertiliser, possibly Spridlington, Hackthorn or Welton.
My parcel run in those days started at West Butterwick, and back to Epworth Graislound, Haxey, Morton and Owston Ferry then on towards Gainsborough.
John Brash Timber had some nice ERF motors at Trent Port
I did chicken farms and duck rearing plants, Cherry Valley comes to mind. Lots of foreign lorries in Rose Bearings in Saxilby. tippers tanks and flat trailers in L&K Fertilisers Skellingthorpe onto Jerusalem and would get onto Lincoln High Street for my lunch after tipping Bookers, and a bed company, canning packaging and Dixon street.
After lunch it was finish off the high street, up the hill to Bracebridge, Hykeham and out to Metheringham Eagle and Swinderby. I would then juggle loads between collections and deliveries on Doddington Road G&F Fischer and ASDA, lincat , hell my brain is overloaded.
The Lincoln 2 run covered more ground than any I think and it was normally 50 to 60 drops per day. That is character building too.
I may write “a day in the life of” on some paper and post it in the old timers thread. Bear with me
I’d forgotten about that fertilizer plant near Saxilby Malc I couldn’t remember the firm’s name, you crossed the river in the village to get to the other bank of the Fossdyke, didn’t Bradshaws have some tackle in there, sure I’ve seen them from the A57.You certainly got around Lincs, two of my favourite runs were to the Conoco North Sea Gas plant at Theddlethorpe, north of Mablethorpe and from Bitmac Scunthorpe to Bacton, south of Cromer via Kirton Lindsey,Lincoln, then down the A15 past Bracebridge Heath and Waddington and on to Sleaford.Cherry Valley Poultry is a blast from the past. Lincolnshire is a nice county.

hi, does anybody remember Thompson frieght services of Scunthorpe and Colin Booth ltd from Barton? And does anybody have any pictures?
I remember Thompsons, their yard was on the old Double Rivers Cafe site at Crowle and the Booth name rings a bell. What about W H Martin from Brigg and Reeds from Scunthorpe? Also S J Barrick tankers from Goxhill, any of these still going?
Probably stretching the thread back to the70s a bit…
Does anyone remember H. Bradley and Sons, I think they came from Wainfleet, they ran a couple of BMC Mastiffs with veg cages, one driver John Epton did regular overnight drops in the Bedfordshire area on his way to the London markets.
Another veg firm was Moon & Eveson from Gosberton, I’m not sure if they had their own lorries or used hauliers.
There was always a lot of lorries loading at the Spalding Bulb & Produce Auction.
Geest had a big fleet of motors at one time in Spalding.

And Gosberton Farm Produce about the same time Nick.Further up north there was John Coxen from North Thoresby and also in the 60s Clugston from Scunthorpe with Reivers, still going I think. I’m sure that the Bradley you mentioned was going in the early 60s,I used to have lifts with them into Sheffield at night when in the RAF thumbing it home from Norfolk.

Now then from a Welton lass. This has brought back some memories. My Dad worked for most of the Lincoln firms in his time. Barker & Lee Smiths, Piggy Wrights, Scotts Transport, Smiths crisps. As a young lass I used to travel everywhere with him in the school holidays. He used to make me get in the back and shift the load around for him. No wonder I’m now married to a trucker.

Eyup Welton lass .
Barker and Lee Smith ran Commer two strokes years ago and they had a driver based in Sheffield.IIRC the wagon headboard was shaped like a cow or summat similar and the company name fitted in it.They were in a green and cream livery I think.
Any photos?
Sorry Chris only photo I’ve got is one of Piggy Wrights I picked up at Truckfest a couple of years ago. Your right about the headboard I remember it well.
Swift Transport started up in Skegness didn’t they? Got to be a huge company. There were so many hauliers and produce growers with their own transport in Lincs.Staples and Tuplins for a start. Then George H Kime and there was another Kime IIRC.Walter Game was another - or was it Walter Smith, one was a Leeds wholesaler I think.
I think you mean Walter Smith, Walter Game was a Leeds fruit & veg merchant with a depot at the Heath on the st.ives to somersham road. used to be almost 100% leyland in the early days and several of my mates worked there, Malc Gibbs, Ray Large and probably more they were big in the fruit game back then, dont know what has become of them as i dont live that way anymore
