Lilladan:
Nice to see these and to remember that the Scania dealer was happy wid Atkinson Defenders for tippers ,but like many did not like Seddon-Atkinson 400 , they had one S-A 400 day cabin tractor wid eight pot Gardner , the driver , was it gipsy Johnny ? said he told them to stick it because it was so cold , and so he left
And they stuck with them until 1980 when they bought 4 Fodens with Gardner engines. They did eventually switch to Scania 8 wheelers and for some reason there was a token DAF too.
As a 9/10 year old i was riding shot gun with Bert Middlecote on my Saturday mornings, dad usually ended up in Fisons or Tioxide and I wasn’t allowed in, so I rode with Bert. I claim, and quite rightly too, to have helped build the A180 bridge over Alexandra Dock, well I rode shot gun while Bert helped build it by fetching the chalk from Mangate Quarry nr Caistor.
That picture was a publicity shot driver is Brian Limm, there were 4 Fodens owned by Browns, this one in Plover Colours and 3 in the Blue and Yellow livery. My desk top Picture is of the 3 Blue and Yellows.
I have to admit, I’d never heard of ‘Plover’ until I saw this photo. Being an ex tipper man I just liked the photo!.. nor did I realise it was actually one of Browns.
Rgds MR.
Ive also got a nice black & white photo of three brand new Atkinsons lined up on the Atkinson stand at the Kent County Show. One of them is Browns eight wheeler OEE 865G. Any idea why a Grimsby motor could have ended up right down here?..The other two motors in the line belong to Safeway Supermarkets and local owner driver Peter Hopkins.
Kenty’s DAF, if you go to Google images and search for “M20 T H Brown”, it brings up a photo of his Seddon Atkinson he had, I think straight after this DAF.

Plover Transport was a management pension fund, needless to say Plover got the cream paying jobs! This caused uproar when someone let it slip and it became public knowledge among the drivers!!

I’m guessing it was down to whichever dealership it was bought from, maybe got a better deal from Kent than locally, I don’t know!

I haven’t heard anything of Brian Limm for a long while, he went on to drive for Peter Carter after Brown’s and if I remember correctly drove E242PEE.
Did Plover run a 140 or 141 ?
No idea about Limmy not heard anything for a long time.

Some more fab pics!! LEE 22F the only picture i have seen of it, have one of LEE 20F and 21F
AFE 460X is interesting too, don’t think i’ve ever seen a 111 in the white over blue livery. I think the first new vehicles to get that livery were E851, 852 & 853 although there were older trucks that were resprayed.
