Right boys you wanted to know, I’ve been past 4 times today and posted out side are these signs. I don’t know if you can reed them as this is the first time I’ve used the wifes camera so please excuse me.( PS Dave is your missis up for giving lessons I thought there was somthing FISHY going on especially with all those brickies and CHIPPIES about
It says fish and chips restaurant and takeaway coming soon. I notice they have put up a brick wall across the side so obviously don’t want big trucks going around the back. It’s nice to see it hasn’t been bulldozed and built on but I wonder how it will survive with only passing trade.
Regards Keith.
Don’t you just drive in just past the canopy and park reversed up to that wooden fence in the back of the pic ?
Hiya simon…they have built a wall level with the back of the building. at one time you could drive in by the punp price sign go round the back
of the cafe and exit through the top opening.we used to reverse to a fence so we faced the road which was behind the wall they have build.
it was priity quiet at the back of the car park as trucks a going past that cafe all night.as you say there is quite alot of space but they have
bricked off an area that parked 9 artics.
John
DD i did’nt know it was the truck show at owestry this weekend. i may go for a joyride tommow, do you think they’ll let me in.

Not unless you had a van like Dave’s. Simon you sound like my boss, theres plenty of room . You used to go around the back of the house and there was a big area to park, also that canapy not that high. You will be able to park accross the road in the layby to get your chips solong as there are no overnighters parked there.
hiya,
Was the cafe at the front of Atkins transport Derby owned by Atkins, stopped for an average nosebag frequently and always heard it being referred to as the Atkins cafe.
thanks harry long retired.
Some from the Northants area who remembers the cafe at Thrapston opposite scotts just over the bridge? there used to be another at Bythorn near where Paul Binns Commercials is now & another one on the A6 at Finedon behind the garage? I think the ACE @ weedon has been mentioned before, it’s now a pile of rubble
Another one on the A428 just before the A509 roundabout between Northampton & Bedford . The four fishes is still in town- now the super sausage & the giggling sausage is still there as is the red lion near junc.16

It was owned by Atkins Harry,I reckon it opened about 1968/9.I used to park round the back on a dodgy but you had to be careful not to stray onto their own vehicles area or the yard dog would give you an earful. And woe betide anybody not paying for parking as they would be on the blower like a shot - not good if you were booked off somewhere else
Chris,
Didn’t FB Atkins also have a small parking area and pumps on the southbound carrigeway opposite ? On the red and rust midlands drivers often used the Airport for a dodgy.

Now I’m confused Charlie.Anyway the company was known as F.B.Atkins,they had a brown lorries and went over t ’ watter (water to you Hants lads). It was a good place for snap (food to you Hants lads),opened at 0600 and closed about 2000 (when big hand is on 12 and little hand on 8 and getting dark to you Hants lads ) Not as good snap as the cafe at Codford St. Mary though mate .

yes it did.there was a footbridge across to the cafe.
A couple of cafe’s for you to ponder over.
This one was Bob’s cafe on the eastbound side of the A45 @ Ryton on Dunsmore
And the famous Motormans on the A62 @ Marsden nr Huddersfield which is still open today.
The Comfort cafe was on the A11 near the Fourwentways round about, I seem to remember the Enterprise was on the A428 Cambridge to St Neots road, very rough parking lot.

Last time i was there[about 10yrs ago]it was just a caravan on the park serving snacks.
Went past where the old ‘layby’ cafe used to be today at weston, remember sitting in there with my dad 30 years ago- who would have believed then what the A34 would be like now There was another cafe further down at Beedon, just before the M4 but can’t remember what it was called .

Hi all, I`m new to this site and my dad was a trucker and I was always with him on school holidays. He drove an AEC Mamoth Major for A E Evans of Ripple Rd Barking/Dagenham, There were lots of cafes around then but the one that stands out in my mind was the Olympia Cafe in Derby. They had a row of Bally Bingo pinballs and a few one arm bandits, heaven for a 12year old, the last time I was in there was 1969 Happy days

Hi bushman welcome to the forum,I drove for A.E.Evans out of their Sheffield depot 1970-79 and was a regular visitor to Barking.Have you got any photos of Evans? This one might bring a few memories back… UYP 879 fleet 127 was at Sheffield for a while, don’t know who the driver is though.I notice the aircon is operating - n/s window is down.
And I used the Olympia when on steel haulage out of Sheffield, long gone I suppose .
