Bushman:
Hi all, I`m new to this site and my dad was a trucker and I was always with him on school holidays. He drove an AEC Mamoth Major for A E Evans of Ripple Rd Barking/Dagenham, There were lots of cafes around then but the one that stands out in my mind was the Olympia Cafe in Derby. They had a row of Bally Bingo pinballs and a few one arm bandits, heaven for a 12year old, the last time I was in there was 1969 Happy days
Hi bushman welcome to the forum,I drove for A.E.Evans out of their Sheffield depot 1970-79 and was a regular visitor to Barking.Have you got any photos of Evans? This one might bring a few memories back… UYP 879 fleet 127 was at Sheffield for a while, don’t know who the driver is though.I notice the aircon is operating - n/s window is down.
And I used the Olympia when on steel haulage out of Sheffield, long gone I suppose .
hiya,
Chris the old AEC looks like she’s running on 40x8s, guaranteed two blow outs a trip eh.
thanks harry long retired.
hiya,
Chris was’nt it funny how you always managed to to get a puncture/blowout when near a cafe which was always handy when they took the spare wheels off us and we had to wait for the tyreman to make the scene and you had to sit there and drink pot after pot ot rosie.
thanks harry long retired.

Aye,always made it to a caff When I came off tankers and onto GGD L’woods job there were no spare wheels on t’wagons, all the wheel braces were taken out as well.I wasn’t used to waiting for ATS turning up,old habits die hard.

Pickfords depot was next door to it or next door but one as we could park up in the depot and get a lift home from the cafe
Anyone remember the Whitehouse, Handborough Rd Eynsham? Or the San Remo? It was between the Evenlode Pub and the Garden Centre, you can see where 2 bungalows now stand where the site was.
Speaking of Eynsham, remember when the tea van in the westbound layby was “Normans”? Was very popular with Smiths, Hayters and CM Downton drivers. Had several owners since, a sign is up for Doggys Big Eat but aint seen one there for a few weeks
Has this one closed? I passed it last week and all the signage was gone. The lady who’d ran it for many years, Jean I think, had a son who never seemed to work in the cafe. (He did general handyman work and gardening.) So it may have gone the way of the one up the road, now operating as the Eagles Nest pub. When I first started crossing the Pennines that was the Standedge cafe and I think was open all night. Very popular with the “rockers” on their bikes.
Thats about all that is nice at the Glider at the top of chalford hill, last time i went in there it took a while for a breakfast that wasnt good and the prices even worse. I had a good breakfast at the old little chef at eynsham next to the jet garage , i was in a car mind no room for trucks , supose i could of parked on the pumps thou . I have mentioned before about the windrush , how popular that site could be with a nice cafe on site i remember my dad stoping in there , a long narrow building if my momory serves me right , my grandad used to do a changeover there many years ago,
I only went in there once years ago for a cup of tea, the old girl was telling to old boys how ill she was, all about the scabs on her back… the rash on her belly…the spots on her god knows what… she had just recovered from this… and it looked like she had all the signs of getting that… I left the tea and went.

Only ever had tea and cake there when taking the “scenic route” to Wickwar. Very rare I ever use a cafe, take food and flask with me. The tea van at Burford’s been tidied up,(if you like kebabs as a staple diet!) used to be a grotty place where kids from the school used to sneak to for a ■■■ or for damp fingers…Had an arguement once with the tea van owner, thought that I should buy something from him as he “paid for the layby.”
Word got around at Smiths and next day about 6 of us stopped there, none buying! Does anyone remember the couple that had the tea van near the old Coln Gravel pit A361 near Little Faringdon turn? An ex Earthline driver runs it now; great if everything you like hearing how anything you’ve done pales into insignificamce compared to his time on Earthline!

regards dave.
hiya,
Does anyone remember the early days days of the motoway services when PSV drivers used to get free meals if they showed the cashier their badge, something of a little thank you for supposedly bringing a load passengers into the establishment so when i did a spell of night trunk and could travel about looking sort of clean and tidy i aquired my dads old surplus to requirements badge which i wore on the reverse of my lapel when i got to the paypoint i just flashed the badge and hey presto a free meal it never failed, but not being a regular night man i wasn’t as well known as the regular guys so it was easy but never used the same place twice running but certainly saved a good few quid, do the services still operate the practice, c’mon you bus drivers tell us.
thanks harry long retired.
