I remember this fantastic cafe at Checkley Tean on the old A50 I think they called it a rest station or something like that.I stayed there one night,in a house at the back of the cafe.I could only just squeeze onto the car park.I had a T bone with all the trimmings then a few bottles of Newcastle Brown. The filthiest stripper was on and it was a good all round experience. There are no places like that now.

Sounds like my house on a Saturday night. Was it not the Checkley Cafe? Regards Charlie

I thought you were the son of a Babtist Minister and didn’t frequent places like that or take a drink Charlie, that’s what you told me on the S’oton thread

Chris you are worse than my wife.Checking up on me like that! :unamused: While we are in the area, what about the Salt Box.Was it on the junction of the Uttoxeter road? I always had the bacon with cheese melted on the plate. Two toast and a pint of tea.I can taste it now.Regards Charlie

Here you are Charlie,a Salt Box breakfast

How much did THAT cost Chris :open_mouth: Only I went in there about a month ago and one similar to that but without the toms, potato bits and fried bread cost me nearly £8! Nearly had a heart attack before I’d even tucked in to it

Hi Trev.
It would have been about threepence when I was going in
I can’t remember where the photo came from but it was taken in the Salt Box,not sure when though.I haven’t been in there since the 70s but it was always a very popular place, food was good, place was clean.

Hi Chris. That picture has made me dribble down my bib.Fifty years ago I used to eat one like that every day.Now I am allowed a bowl of cereal and a piece of wholegrain toast. What a poor sad old bugger(excuse the French) Miss all that. Will be offline for about four weeks, Off caravanning,so if anyone sees me with my sticker in the back window saying " I,m not a tourist I,m a lorry driver on holiday " then give me a friendly two fingers.Regards Charlie

Have a good caravanning holiday then Charlie, they say the New Forest is a nice place to go,and don’t forget to slow down when a wagon gets up your back bumper
Cereal and wholegrain toast, not a patch on a plate of cardiac arrest.

I used to take dog meat to Burton quite regularly and it was one of my favourite trips.Down the A50 and the cafe was on the junction where you turned right for Burton,if you carried on A516 I think, there was a right ■■■■-hole on the left Silver Wheels I think, memory is a little jaded.Anyway ,I digress, the Salt Box was always one of those cafe’s which was spotless clean and the food well cooked. It had one side for lorry drivers and one for car drivers.I must say a lot of these just ate in the ‘truckers’ side and it was a great cafe.I remember I would have a nice brekkie go and tip then flog the empty pallets on the way back at the yard on the right a couple of mile up from the cafe…oh happy days

Hiya …dose anyone know whats happening with the Half way house ■■? I came past the other day and some building work was going on.
Has that cafe gone to someother bisuness never to return to a cafe…Desert driver can you put light on the subject.
John

Sorry John don’t know myself, they’ve been working on it for a few weeks now. Last week as I was passing a delivery van was doing a drop and a young lady with a baby in hand was signing his notes so whether it’s being turned into a home or carrying on as a cafe i’m not shore. Obviously the kitchen have been working all along as there has been a bun in the oven  If I see anything I’ll let you know.

Regards Keith

Right boys you wanted to know, I’ve been past 4 times today and posted out side are these signs. I don’t know if you can reed them as this is the first time I’ve used the wifes camera so please excuse me.( PS Dave is your missis up for giving lessons   I thought there was somthing FISHY going on especially with all those brickies and CHIPPIES about

It says fish and chips restaurant and takeaway coming soon. I notice they have put up a brick wall across the side so obviously don’t want big trucks going around the back. It’s nice to see it hasn’t been bulldozed and built on but I wonder how it will survive with only passing trade.

Regards Keith.

Hi Keith,
I’d say you done alright, that’s a good pic, shame if the lorries can’t get in there, but at least they have the Midway and the Raven just up the road.As you say relying on passing trade out in the country is hoping a bit,but at least it’s still a business premises.
Cheers Dave.

Hi ya…DD that 94 ppl looks inviteing i might pop down for a litre or two. is that price to syphon your own out of the tanks.
i’ve seen plenty of times i’ve stpped at the half way and been 2or3 mins over which put the Raven out of bounds.
there was a chap called Pete running the cafe10 years back and was a really nice then s…t hit and he died of a heart attack
suddenly. he really built up that place…he had a love for those NSU RO 80 cars i think there was 3 hanging around at one
time.
DD… Their was a sand pit at the back of that cafe at one time was that Caulkins■■?..I have loaded out of there in the 70,s
for Ensor at Sandbach i think.

Hi boys
John I wondered who would pick up on the pump prices  sad really as it wasn’t that long ago that it closed.
I was parked in that tight layby on the other side of the road and you can see in the photo this side of the fence the entrance to Waters yard. His other entrance just out of shot ( there I’ve got the terminology all ready) he shares with the sand quarry. I think it’s run by Hansons now but yes it’s still going having an extension only a couple of years ago. It runs right up to the borstal.Although not for a couple of years now but I used to fetch the odd load of building sand from there for my bosses ground working side.
Not Caulkins there’s was at loggerheads.

Hi Keith,
There was one of their ppeople carriers paarked in a layby where we take pic’s on Leominster bypass last tuesday. I pulled in behind him,not to close,he got out of his vehicle walked around to the back, had a look at me,then looked at his back wheel, then drove off. I had blocked his camera view, not intentionally, but it’s a layby for anyone. We got the pic’s and he didn’t,not there anyway…
