I,d swop mine for an electric sander. Back to cafes Chris. What was the name of the cafe in Paternoster St in Sheffield just up from the Sally Army? Great digs.Regards Charlie
:loharlie
Hi Charlie,I think you mean Paternoster Row.There was a Davyās cafe there but I donāt recall any digs on that street.Did you park near the bus station?
My mate sammyoposite might know those digs,he may look in here tonight unless heās out ratting or haunting of course
Hereās one for you now.I stayed in some digs in Southampton near a place called Seven Dials or summat similar. They were on the main road going into the city which would be the A33 I think. This was in 1968,any ideas?
Hi Chris.Just testing.Of course it was Paternoster Row! The cafe was on the corner. Also did beds as well.Used to park in the bus/coach station.Free as well. The digs you are on about were on The Avenue(A33).We will have to see if TIR Original sees this posting.Although I worked for several Soton firms.I never lived there unfortunately.See what comes up.Regards Charlie

Hi Charlie, was that cafe/digs next door to a boozer called the Midland Hotel ? I think I know the place you mean now,but the name has gone.
Yes,The Avenue was the place.I stayed there just the once and there was a driver in there who worked for either Crow Carrying or Thomas Allen who showed me the way down to ISR at Hythe.IIRC there was a bit of a ring road that took you west around the city and you came out at Millbrook.
I got a dodgy that night as well
Hi Chris.Yes it was next doorto the Midland.Never went in there.Being a Baptist ministers son I have never partaken of the demon drink.
Good night out there.Regards Charlie

Anyonee remember the cafe in Walsall with a scrapyard behind it,used to be a good place.
Cheers Dave.
I canāt even remember which road it was on,took a mate up that way to fetch a lorry back in the 80ās,it was a good place with good priced grub.
Cheers Dave.

You are correct young man.The memory has kicked in.It was not a cafe but a chip shop as you say.Funny how the mind forgets some things. The beds were not bad in the Sally Army and the food was ok.Good price as I remember. Many thanks for the info.Regards Charlie

Any of you chaps remember the Fromes Hill Cafe,on the A4103 Hereford to Worcester road. It has recently become an Indian restaurant.
Cheers Dave.

Sorry John donāt know myself, theyāve been working on it for a few weeks now. Last week as I was passing a delivery van was doing a drop and a young lady with a baby in hand was signing his notes so whether itās being turned into a home or carrying on as a cafe iām not shore. Obviously the kitchen have been working all along as there has been a bun in the oven
If I see anything Iāll let you know.
Regards Keith
I remember this fantastic cafe at Checkley Tean on the old A50 I think they called it a rest station or something like that.I stayed there one night,in a house at the back of the cafe.I could only just squeeze onto the car park.I had a T bone with all the trimmings then a few bottles of Newcastle Brown. The filthiest stripper was on and it was a good all round experience. There are no places like that now.

Sounds like my house on a Saturday night. Was it not the Checkley Cafe? Regards Charlie

Hiya Charlie Yes Checkley Cafe but they called it a rest station or set down.I only live 40 mins away but it was a great place to stay The food was fantastic and a great atmosphere.
Just reading about the decline of good eateries, that you donāt need a mortgage for.I think people donāt take or are not allowed to take time to eat properly. Some of the muck dished up these days is disgusting and it is important to eat correctly, especially when away from home.I work nights so have to take my own food but sometimes, especially in cold weather, you just need something hot.The cafe in the lay by near East Midlands airport has a new owner and is spotless clean now.The one on the start of Woodhead is very good as well. There is one at Lockerbie now open 24 hours.None are these are very cheap, but I believe are good value.
Hereās the one. This would be one of the best.
