Old Cafe's

while were’re down this area what about the cafe just south of stratford on the old A46 towards Bidford ,think it was called Briddy’s or something like that . Remember it stood derelict for years .

Norman Ingram:
Lads I know the old pidgeon cafe, tried it on the way down, it shuts at about 2.30, I pulled up and it was closed, my wife checked the time on the door, we had a good dinner there in 2006, Dave the First cafe is one of the old place that closed down and a new place built near Symond yat, on the lefthandside as you leave Monmouth, I just saw it as I flew past, I wondered what it was like, from the outside it looked modern.

Norman.
Would that be the one across from the cafe on the other [c/way?]If so i stopped there yrs ago probably 12yrs when i ran out of hrs on my way to cardiff,It was a right dump then,a typical greasy spoon.
regards dave.

Neither of those are cafes now Dave, the one on the eastbound side was truckers a few years back, they have built a new place, but I don’t think it’s a cafe yet.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Stayed there myself in the sixties as well and as you say a bit of a dump but the beds was clean and it was quiet enough, i had the business card for the place for years but like everything else i had relating to the “job” my old lady has designated it to the recycling bin i had a book full of overnight stopping places and return load phone numbers, my old BRS folder was amongst the casualties and it was complete with spare logsheets so all my dodgies have gone to the wall, that thing was a surefire lift getter.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Charlie,I think you mean Paternoster Row.There was a Davy’s cafe there but I don’t recall any digs on that street.Did you park near the bus station?
My mate sammyoposite might know those digs,he may look in here tonight unless he’s out ratting or haunting of course
Here’s one for you now.I stayed in some digs in Southampton near a place called Seven Dials or summat similar. They were on the main road going into the city which would be the A33 I think. This was in 1968,any ideas?

Hi Chris.Just testing.Of course it was Paternoster Row! The cafe was on the corner. Also did beds as well.Used to park in the bus/coach station.Free as well. The digs you are on about were on The Avenue(A33).We will have to see if TIR Original sees this posting.Although I worked for several Soton firms.I never lived there unfortunately.See what comes up.Regards Charlie

Hi Charlie, was that cafe/digs next door to a boozer called the Midland Hotel ? I think I know the place you mean now,but the name has gone.
Yes,The Avenue was the place.I stayed there just the once and there was a driver in there who worked for either Crow Carrying or Thomas Allen who showed me the way down to ISR at Hythe.IIRC there was a bit of a ring road that took you west around the city and you came out at Millbrook.
I got a dodgy that night as well
