Old Cafe's

Hi Norman,
When I was at BRS at Smethwick my boss used to let me take the wagon home as I parked on the sunset across the road from home but sometimes I ended up there on a dodgy. He was ok about it (ex. driver) but said if I was on a night out to book off at any village around as long as I didn’t book Penkridge ! He was a great boss and would even come out of the office and sheet the next trailor for us while we got a cuppa! Good days!

Trev, I have parked in your villiage a few times in my life, there used to be a cafe along there, and I used to go to a night club, and dances, but this was way back.

That would be the sunset[now a s/market].Had many a good night there myself norman.
regards dave.

Thanks Dave, that was the one.

Hi Dave,

Yes I paked on the Sunset cafe most nights for years as it was opposite my house. It still made a real good profit to the end but Kwik save offered them a great amount of money for the land. It quickly went from kwik save to Somerfields, its now a co-op with many other shops also. My firm changed from the red & rust to exel and now the yellow peril and I have to travel 25mls to B’ham to fetch the truck, progress eh?

Another caravan cafe on the A420 Oxfords to Swindon, Past Farrington and a pub in a layby ran by Ann, was on the Cb, also a transport cafe in Devises almost oppersite the brewery, and the truck stop just before Swindon on the A420.

Yes Norman,

It was called the Boundry, it finished about 30yrs ago :open_mouth: , It was a 24hr place but it got quite seedy at night if you get my drift   visits from the law were common!
About that time T.Brady (barrow) had a yard across the road just before the football ground operating under the name of Cargo european services do you remember them?

Wow… The Sunset that brings back memories i did a few loads out of the warehouse next door something to do with ICI /Mitchel cotts.
I see the cafe on the other side of the roundabout going towards the M54 is still doing OK i nipped in that place a few months ago for a fry up.
But can’t remember the name…Now Trev what was the name of this cafe. It was on the same side as the Sunset but was in the middle of Penkridge
near a zebra crossing it was only small but we would use that cafe… Parking was a pain only road side.really clean and GOOD food.

Hi John,
The one on the A449 going towards Wolverhampton is called the Farmhouse, was jam packed on there yesterday with Nynas tankers
I don’t remember one in the middle of Penkridge but those little shops there have changed hands many times.

Several weeks ago we discussed a cafe on the A19 southbound opposite the Woodside. It had a sloping park, some old fuel pumps and tanks and was a dump but nobody came up with name. Thanks to JJ72 on the worst cafes thread it was called the Woodview - so now we can all bloody sleep at night
Thanks JJ.

hiya,
Chris but was it on the dodgy list for Sheffield homeward bounders or just that bridge too far.
thanks harry long retired.

No,not too far Harry  .We used to do local work up Teesside running crude benzene into Dorman Long Chemicals(BSC)at Port Clarence. When you got far enough in front you could sneak to either Scotch Corner or the Woodview, log book out and away to Sheffield.Couldn’t see the point of nighting out if you could park up at 12/1300.By the end of the week I was skint anyway so had to go home

hiya,
Chris skint near the weekend, i was skint an hour after getting my pay packet thats how long it took me to get home and tip-up.
thanks harry long retired.

Yes Trev I do remember the transport firms, also I last used the Farmhouse in the 1996, a couple of years before I retired. When on Carlsberg, we had a depot at Stafford, and I got tipped late, I used to go into the centre and park oppersite the pub, have fish & chips, or eat in the Bistro wine bar right next to the lorry park.

You’ll not sleep on that lorry park Chris not unless you’r on the flat bit at the bottom you’ll keep rolling out of bed or sliding into a ruck at one end of
your cab.Thats a stiff neck all the next day…Oh happy new year mate…Chicken curry and chips tommorow at Shell for dinner YUM…YUM.

Thanks to Andy we can all get a good nights sleep now after many weeks of trying to remember the name of the cafe with the sloping car park Southbound on the A19    .
Now what did we say was the name of the next cafe on the left that had the fuel pumps and was it a Shell garage  .
