oil companys

Brand new & awaiting delivery! Strange cover on the drive axle hub?

Look top of tank/rear & you can just make out the name of the (in)famous Davis Bros. they ran quite a few tankers on contract to Mobil Oil.

Bedford S-Type, with a Scammell coupling.

:stuck_out_tongue: Whoa, I’ve driven one of those, we had 2 at Hargreaves in the early 60’s one had Thornys own engine in it (a great machine) the other had bee re engined with a Gardner (a bit pedestrian :unamused: )

Double post.

YEWCO (Yorkshire Engineering & Welding Co) yard at Idle nr Shipley, W.Yorks in mid 60s, an Aladdins cave for a Fuel Tanker nut!

what a great photo ,Idle is in Bradford ,the yard wouldn`t have been too far from the old Jowett factory that became International Harvesters and now Morrisons

If I’d grown up there, my Mum & Dad would have had no trouble guessing where I was when School was out

Didn’t see too many painted all white!

Hi Trev, used to squint through those gates at what they had just built, it was always full…I trained as a welder at Quasi Arc, (still got my certificates…then became a Watch Maker…no wonder I ended up with lorries!!

Thompsons, fascinating place…where did it all go wrong??

Popped down via the “lost city” to get some bits yesterday… the trip ended up making me sad…its all gone…and nothing there to replace it. No lorries just private cars…like Lemmings towards a cliff edge…

Reckon we had the best of it

Good Luck, Cheerio for now.

Hi Saviem, according to my brother in law it went downhill rapid when the German firm Heil took over, previous to that job he had worked at John Thompsons all his life welding Albion axle casings.
I used to load trailers in the axle bays for Thomas Ingles, usually for Foden, Maudsley, Commer, Albion and chassis frames for Volvo,Scania, Land rover, Rolls Royce etc. Sad to think all that skilled labour is now history.

I think it’s the “kiss of death” once you get taken over by a foreign firm, because they are usually 1 of your competitors otherwise why would they be interested in you! So you might as well start drawing the curtains & turning off the lights because they are just eliminating the competition :unamused: :frowning: .
Regards Chris

It went on the road the year I was born, 1964, hope I look better than this :open_mouth: . Although I have to say at the end of some weeks I feel in this condition :unamused:

Course it always helps when you add the pic

Smart Leyland Octopus in the old Mobil red  . My Dad loved them when he first started on Mobil in 1966, he didn’t like it when they switched to the Grey!

I remember reading a sort of Long Distance Diary on this wagon years ago, it used to go across to Belgium IIRC, (I know Belgium is hardly Long Distance but it’s a long way for a Fuel Tanker). Regards Chris

Another blast from the past. Regards Larry.

Most of the big oil companies who contracted there work out in the 70s/80s to the likes of Tankfrieght.Wincantons.etc also asked that there drivers (those who wanted to) were transfered to the new contractor IIRC.I seem to remember the drivers getting redundancy payouts and then walking straight into a job driving the same lorry but for a new company.(Correct me if I am wrong.)Townson Tankers who I worked for at the time used to supply the likes of esso @ m/chester t/park with motors painted in there livery. Here are photos of just 2 of them 10

This Seddon was on contract to Esso Leeds terminal along with a Seddon 6 wheeler Driver,s J Percy/J Greenhalgh
