OHS Transport

You are right. Nazmi was one of best, a true gent. I had left Sooty just before he closed shop but heard on the grapevine that Nazmi had gone to work for a haulage firm in Izmir.
Had Barry Willis joined the company before you left? He was transport manager for a time.

Think i Found the right ones this time

Wonder if they’re filled with Mars Bars en route to Kuwait?

Just in case any of you are wondering, Orhan is still alive and living in Turkey but still visits England regularly!

Very nice picture Dear Andy
Very best regards to all the ex OHS/PÄ°E/UNITED ITL CARRIEERS drıvers.

Is this the sexiest truck on the old OHS fleet?

I collected this new from Antwerp with a new Dorsey skeletal flatbed trailer and brought it over to Rainham to Tilt Tek. Picked up a brand new completed tilt and this is a picture of the rig after servicing and washing by the Contex crew at Pinar Basi near Izmir after the first trip.

Correct, Scottish Milk Marketing Board was the client, and hv signed a contract for 400-450 refeer feta cheese for Iran,
but after 3-4 deliveries, Iranians were not happy with the products and they hv cancelled the contract,
had go to arbitration in Glasgow against SMMB.

superswede10:
I seem to remember that OHS loaded out of Stranraer in the early 80s.The local creamery started producing feta cheese for export and OHS had a contract i think. They later started moving it by train but I remember the Macks and fridges.

Those trucks dıd not belong to Ohs/Contex, they are Iranıan truks.

Most of these pics are after my time at OHS.

When I left they had not taken over PIE or created United.

That picture of the three light blue trucks is quite interesting. They are not Macks. They are Brockways I think and whether they were ever on the OHS/Contex fleet I don’t know.

Anyway great pics Ash and adr. Thanks for posting them.

I saw them and instantly thought that they were Brockway’s, the shape of the logo is identical, Brockway were usually dump trucks and like Mack based on the East Coast, I’m quite sure that they were absorbed into the Mack Empire in the early 70s

This truck was a Contex Truck,
B61 Long nose Mack, Contex had 3-4 long nose Macks in the fleet in early 70 ies.

zulu1512:

Terry F:
Having worked for OHS for about eight years I find these threads very interesting as they have brought back some good memories. Memories of people I had to my shame forgotten. Other names I now remember are: Nick Carter, Nigel Edwards, John Curran and a load more Johns but sadly no surnames and Tony Gambleton, others have already had a mention, During that eight year period OHS employed many drivers, many of which you never got to meet as we were all going to different place in different direction it wasn’t surprising really. But I do remember Andy. I recall ringing up for job and was told to go to they base for an interview. Arriving at the appointed time I was shown into the drivers rest room to wait, and wait I did. Towards the close of the day this guy (Andy) came in and said, “Bugger if I’d have known it was you, you wouldn’t have had to come down here. When can you start?” I started a week later in early 1979.

Hi all, great post, as a Londoner i was very interested in OHS, and the PIE companies
Do any of you remember Geoff ( Jeff ) Ruggins, he was a great guy, a fantastic character, and took me on my first trip to the middle east when i worked for Asian Transport ( Astran ). I know he worked for OHS and PIE, and originally hailed from Middlesex
RIP geoff

Hi all.Truckyboy.I must concur with you as i also had the great good fortune to be taken under the wing of Jeff Ruggins when i first started with Asian as owner driver.A great person,he deserved to grow old ‘‘dis’’-gracefully.Mike.

It’s great to have Nazmi on the thread.

He’s an absolute expert on Turkish transport companies and joined me at OHS Rainham in thos early days.

I was with Jeff Ruggins on Simon International, what a great guy,we lost him much too early.
How many of you tried one of Jeff’s curries?
A group of us enjoyed one of his curries in Volos while waiting for the ferry, and Tony Khan thought it was a bit hot!

What a Team Andy.
Unfortunately we have lost The Cournal, Ruknettın usta, they hv passed hv away a few years ago.

You’re right Nazmi, they were a great team and our trucks got a full thorough service and valet
Wash each time we arrived.

You’ll see from other posts on this site that the Brits had a lot of affection and respect for the Turkish drivers.
