Here’s a picture of the two main truck types on the OHS fleet at the time. The Mack is an F786 with a 280 hp. Thermodyne straight six with turbocooler.
Does anyone know how many Mack trucks were in the fleet of OHS? And does anyone know the connection between OHS and United? Is that the same company? Any information of the Mack trucks is welcome, as I collect information of Mack trucks in Europe. Thanks!
Gerlof
Nazmi Ozcan will know for sure. When I left in 1975 there were something like 30 Macks, 10 Seddon Atkinsons, and 2 GMC’s.
United was a company created by OHS owner, Orhan Sertel, but I have no further details.

Was there/is there any connection with a company called SATRANS? They operated some 40 Macks (as I was told) and carried sometimes the same logo as OHS? Can anyone shine a light on this?
I think by SA Trans you mean Sabanci which is a large Turkish conglomerate. I can’t remember if they had Macks but they did have a lot of Kenworths, They were nothing to do with OHS/Contex/United.

Well, I hope that Nazmi can give us some more details. But 30 Macks is a whole bunch. But were the trucks of OHS later repainted in the United colours, of were it different trucks? Looking forward to more information.

Antwerpen,
Interesting thread and some great pics.
One question, why did OHS feel the need to have Sed/Atks in amongst a fleet of Macks and Volvos?
Hello Nazmi
I have spoken and been to your office so we must have met but it was 30 years ago and the memory goes a little grey. I was working for a company called BR FRANKS Costal (Morissa confectionary) based in East London I worked with a guy called Chris. OHS, Astran and Leadhams did a lot of work for us back then bringing confectionary from Zagreb and taking other stuff out to Iraq for us. Met a lot of the drivers either here or in Yugo, Turkey and other european places. Still in contact with Chris he told me that Ken was in quite a bit of trouble but that was over 10 years ago no idea what he is doing now.

Good afternoon Nazmi,
Thanks again for the great information. You mention that 30 Mack trucks were bought second hand in the US. That’s means that the other onse were new i guess. Do you know if they were importer by the Mack distributor in the UK at that time? And is it true that maintenance was done by Van Hove in Belgium?
Best regards,
Gerlof
Helo there,
Only 30 were second, and they were imported directly from Southern USA with Freuhauf Reeefer Trailers behınd.
no agent was involved.
For the maintenance…we had two optıons.
a- For bıg maıntenance…i.e re-buıldıng the engıne + gearbox etc,we used to buy the parts from Mack-Antwerp and do the
repaırs ın our workshops…Raınham&Munıch.
b-For other maınentance , ıf the truck ıs ın Belgıum ,yes we used to use Vanhove for
repaırs.
We had 2 other workshops as well, 1 in Istanbul maın one was ın ızmır.
There was no computers at the tıme, I had to rcv all the reports and ask a gırl to record them
in trucks and trailers maıntenance fıle, so that we know how many kılometers truck done before
needs for example clutch to be changed…Beleıve me was not very easy to follow up.
Regards
