I guess that when you’re running Macks and GMC’s the fuel consumption of a ■■■■■■■ 340 looks good. I don’t know how they compared to F89’s or 111’s.
This one is in a field beside US Highway 169 at the Kansas/Oklahoma state line.
What a sad sight!
I understand that these Astro cabs suffer from severe corrosion where the steel meets the aluminium.
Best bet would be to locate one in Saudi where the rot would be minimal. That’s where the two OHS tractors ended up with P & O.
Having worked for OHS for about eight years I find these threads very interesting as they have brought back some good memories. Memories of people I had to my shame forgotten. Other names I now remember are: Nick Carter, Nigel Edwards, John Curran and a load more Johns but sadly no surnames and Tony Gambleton, others have already had a mention, During that eight year period OHS employed many drivers, many of which you never got to meet as we were all going to different place in different direction it wasn’t surprising really. But I do remember Andy. I recall ringing up for job and was told to go to they base for an interview. Arriving at the appointed time I was shown into the drivers rest room to wait, and wait I did. Towards the close of the day this guy (Andy) came in and said, “Bugger if I’d have known it was you, you wouldn’t have had to come down here. When can you start?” I started a week later in early 1979.
came accross this today ,So would this have been a OHS unti or just on demo
Don’t ever remember seeing it. Could have been a subby, not sure
That Seddon looks as though it’s exiting the freight area at Dover Eastern docks. As I recall all our 400’s were delivered painted in OHS colours. The first one was delivered in Royal Blue which was the wrong colour and my fault for the spec!
Love to know your surname Terry F as I’m sure I know you.
Good morning Andy. Does the name Fowler ring any bells?
Hi terry, mthe name rings a bell but at my age the old memory is not what it used to be! What year did you join the company?
Hi Andy
You don’t have to tell me about age and memory mate. I joined OHS around 78-79 although we know each other we did see much of each othe because you had become manager when I joined. We met more when you were still on the road and I was driving for Maurice Carman from Kings LYNN pulling for Brit European.
Cheers for now Terry
Did you take over one of the Seddon Atki’s?
No went straight on to an ex PIE Volvo fo a couple of trips then was given a Mack
That explains things. I had left OHS before they took over PIE. So it may have been a different Andy!
I think his surname was McClain or something like that
I am Andy MacLean but I had definitely left before PIE was taken over but I do vaguely remember you and the old Carman Brit European days.

Hello all, did not John Yardley, and John May, (Chaddersley Commercials, my word , the centre of the UK used truck trade was once Kidderminster)!! end up with the bulk of the ex PIE DAFs, (complete with the kitchen packs, a typical example of our transatlantic cousins" missing the boat")! wonder who they sold them too? Cheerio for now.
Good morning Saviem, it’s good to see you back . I do remember that one of the ex P.I.E. D.A.F.'s (which had the right hand seat missing and was complete with the kitchen sink) was bought by a company from the Northampton area called I.I.R.C. Euroroute. I met one of their drivers called Mick in Istanbul back in 1980 and I seem to remember that it had been repainted in a blue livery.
P.I.E. from what I had been told was started with the intention of doing all the U.K. Middle East work which many drivers referred to as just P.I.E. in the sky.
Hope this helps.
Regards Steve.
A good friend of mine, Bernie Willis drove one of those DAF’s. He also works on Iran Container Company, Parkes Intl. Trailers, Pars Intl. Containers, and OHS.
Right now he’s living in Australia but I’ll try to get him involved on this thread.

The only thing that I can think of Andy is that I started later than week after my ‘interview’ Sertel had just bought the PIE Volvo’s when i arrived and you must have just jeft. Thinking about this, I seem to think that Nazmi was running the office at that time’
You could well be right. Nazmi was a great guy. He’s living in Izmir now and unfortunately separated from his English wife.
