hiya,
Dave, was actually told by the regular driver to only check the oil and water,
I didn’t need telling twice and believe me when I parked it up on the last day
it had my trademark spray of crap across both doors but it had earned plenty
the week I had it and no complaints from the regular driver and the boss.
thanks harry, long retired.

looking for pics of Earby Haulage, Silentnight, Carr Haulage, Donaghadee Carpets etc in the 60s/70s !!

The engine options for the Dodge LAD cabbed lorry were Perkins 6.305 & later 1962 the 6.354 also Leyland 0.350 or 0.375 which was fitted to the 9ton range with 10 stud hubs, the AEC engine was at the time only available in the 6 wheeler versions with the Albion rear end & transmission if my memory is correct. I would go for the 6.305 in the photo above only because of the style of the grill fitted, this was the grill Dodge fitted before the 6.354 engine came out in 61/62.Only my opinion though :unamused:

I bought the Dodge Truck NCB 348 new from Joe Ainsworth & Co, Montague Street, Blackburn. in 1958, it had a Perkins 6.354 engine 5 speed gearbox and Eaton 2 Speed Axle the flat and paint work was completed by KB Coachbuilders in Darwen.

Thanks for the info on the Dodge “dpickup”,not often someone comes on the TN from all those years ago and can claim to have bought a motor new! What kind of traffic did you carry and where to ? I’m not being nosey, just interested,Cheers Bewick.

Hi, matey. Thanks for the brilliant info. Can you remember whose gearbox was in that Dodge?
And don’t say, “Mine, 'cos I paid for it!”.

As a spotty face apprentice mechanic with the ERF/ Dodge dealer in Edinburgh Iam sure that Dodge fitted a ENV make of gearbox , a the Dodges fitted with the AEC engine were fitted with a AEC box .

I can confirm that ENV were the “standard” fitment for the four-wheeled Dodges. Most, if memory serves, also had the Eaton 2-speed axle.

A rare breed this for Suttons dont remember seeing many about in their colours.0

Suttons had many-a-dozen Seddon Atkinson 400s in the fleet. That said, there was only ever one which didn’t have a Gardner engine - and this is it; which went on to driver training duties after being one of the London flyers.

Stansfield, I wonder if the Carboys on the bed belong to William Blythe, Church, Accrington.

Think the date on this pic is a bit optimistic

Kind words, Pete

The reason it looked so grubby on that day, was that it had just got home from a round trip, starting in Blackburn and returning via Land’s End and John O’Groats! It was part of a convoy on a charity fundraising trip, and also carried other motors for part of the journey.

I did the first leg down to Cornwall and back, starting out on Friday lunchtime and down to St Erth, then down to Land’s End Saturday morning and back up to Thornbury (rather held up the older motors!), and then across to Chepstow, Monmouth and back up the A49 to Leyland to drop the trailer on Sunday evening.

Kevin Battersby then set off on Monday afternoon, up to JoG for Wednesday, and back home in Blackburn on Friday night.

Oh, and the previous week, I’d had it down in Bournemouth, via London on the way down, and Bath and Peterborough on the way back!

" Old 47 " was doing its duty again earlier today .
I photographed it at Carnforths Truckhaven , as it participated in the road run from the B.C.V.M., Leyland , to the A 6 Shap Fell summit. Ill post a photo of it later this week.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

It also took part in the first Great North Run, including Shap, organised by Ted Hannon in 1990, and appears in the Shap video produced by the BCVM

Here you are , “240 Gardner” !!

Old 47 , as it arrives at Carnforth Truckhaven on Sunday morning , being driven by Keith Baron.

Thank you! Wait till I have a word with young Keith (my YTS apprentice in 1990!) about running around empty :unamused: That’s not what he was taught!!

This one could be one of Pauls (moomooland) photos hope he wont mind.Found it on the Oldham fbook site

This one was taken on Huddersfield Road A62 at Waterhead just leaving the borough of Oldham(sign on the left)

What a gem of a find John that’s a cracking picture of the A62 through Waterhead in the days before they built the M62.
Out of sight to the right just behind the photographer is Chaddertons Bakery which was on the corner of Waterhead bus terminus.
On the left is the old George and Dragon public house, then the County Borough of Oldham sign which was next to the long gone Post Office with Derek Thompson’s handy man shop next door.
Walter Pools old yard was up one of the side streets to the right in the distance.
The Atki and AEC will be getting a bit of speed up for the long climb up Austerlands brow.
Apart from the curve of the road you would hardly recognise this location today with all the buildings on the left of the picture along with most on the right now demolished.
Take a look at the scene today here on Google Street View.
Thanks for posting John brilliant.

Seen here making a left turn off King Street on to Union Street Oldham.
The transformer would have been collected by Wynn’s from the near by Ferranti factory down the road at Hollinwood.
In those days long before the M62 was built many loads such as this came through Oldham town centre.
They would then proceed up and down the steep hills across the Pennines towards Huddersfield on the old A62 which is why in this case three of Wynn’s Pacific heavy haulage tractors were assigned to the job

Great photo, moomooland. Proper drivers!
