Hi ,SBFT, Iwas told by an ex Sealand transport ,driver Clive Bibby , that the Borderer in Roberts Garage ,Grindley Brook was the one he drove at Shotton for a while ,He said it came up from South Wales as a Drivers training motor dont know iff it was true or not ,Cheers Barry

Hi Trevor, I remember the F10, it belonged to an owner driver, a good mate of mine from Broughton knows him, who is also an OD.,Rumour was old man Mayers sold his shares in Bejam (Iceland) to buy the new fleet of SK Mercs, I remember one unfortunate Mayers who drove one into a car park in Leeds which had a height limit…woops!

Thanks for the OB Transport info lads,I remember them loading those tanks in protected cages, out of Octel at E.Port and also Lostock Gralam,it was anti-knock compound for petrol I think.
I didn’t do a lot of work into North Wales - Shotton was a regular place for crude benzole out of the by-products plant- but apart from there the only other drops I did with a tanker in the 70s were Bernard Wardle at Caernafon and Ferodo near Bangor. One other place I went was in Bethesda,on the A5,it was a small industrial unit on the r/h side going east, over a narrow bridge. They made paint, special paint for cars IIRC,and took 500 galls of Toluene about three times a year, but their name escapes me,anybody remember it ? There was a disused slate quarry at the back, looked about a thousand feet high and one of the locals who worked at the little factory said “It was all chucked up by 'and you know”.
I once decided to go back empty to Sheffield via the Llanberis Pass,It would be about 1970,I had an AEC MK3 8-legger tanker,a nice scenic run which was made even more interesting when meeting coaches coming t’other way.hello chris , ob also went to Anglesey with octel , i can remember . Did yo ever go to Synthite at Mold and Grasser at Sandycroft , and their was Neston tar company at Queensferry . thank you Trevor
Hi Trevor, sorry for late reply. No,never went to Synthite or Graesser but went into Monsanto at Acrefair several times with Benzene and until about 1972 5000 galls had to be drummed off, took ages. They eventually put a storage tank in which was what you would have expected of Monsanto. Air Products had a big depot near there, running AEC Mammoth Minors IIRC. I think I’ve already mentioned going into Shotton for crude benzole so won’t ramble on.
I remember OB running to Anglesey, that’s a great photo of OB that Chepstowchap put on,just as I remember them with the ■■■.Octel caged tank.

They were the chinese six Mammoth Minors Trevor and those AP drivers were on real good money I remember. I seem to remember that tar plant at Neston although I never went into it.I think either Hipwood and Grundy or Horrocks tankers went in there from Lancs Tar distillers at Cadishead.
Happy New Year to you too.
Hello Chris again a quickie Neston Tar Distillers had a plant at Queensferry as well Trevor

Hi Barry, I remember the atki in shotton, it was white, not blue, and was used for driver training, when the fleet was Guy Big Js, cheers SBF10
I remember another company working out of John Summers, not from North Wales though,Dixons of Scholar Green near Stoke. They ran ERFs and shortish tri-axle well trailers,a bit like the ones Summers had. I saw a photo somewhere but can’t find it.
Chris

hello Chris as well as Dixons from the Stoke ares there was Davey roadways who i think would haul scrap steel to Shelton steel works at stoke .
another company was Carmans they would take JCBs to Liverpool docks and backload to the Potteries and i think sometimes to the continent they had Fodens and Seddons and were from the Kidsgrove area thank you trevor
Carmans Transport were at Scholar Green then became Brit-European Transport. The depot is now a housing development, but I believe they are still in business somewhere.
