Was the paint place something like HMC? Strange place sort of in the middle of nowhere, I think they had a place in Manchester, too. If I remember correctly there was a classic car repair place across the road from them.
*Edit, here you go, it’s HMG, not HMC. I think this is their Manchester branch, no mention of the Welsh one so assume it’s shut?

Hi Cav,that name doesn’t ring a bell but my memory is not what it was. However that classic car place does ring a bell and I’m wondering if the paint factory supplied the product to the classic car place?
You are right about it being in the middle of nowhere, but at least there were plenty of pubs in Bethesda, stayed there one night, parked on what could have been an old railway station, not sure, and stayed in the Post Office.Apparantly there’s a boozer in the village that still takes pre-decimal coinage and 77% of the residents use Welsh as their first language.
Deesider: Chris, that small specialist paint factory in Bethesda is BRADITE Ltd…still going after all these years, I think…
Thanks Deesider, that’s the firm,Bradite, looks like it’s part of HMG Paints as Cav suggested. So the narrow bridge I went over straddled the River Ogwen, there’s an Ogwen in South Wales as well I think.
I would never have thought it was still going.
Chris Webb:
Thanks for the OB Transport info lads,I remember them loading those tanks in protected cages, out of Octel at E.Port and also Lostock Gralam,it was anti-knock compound for petrol I think.
I didn’t do a lot of work into North Wales - Shotton was a regular place for crude benzole out of the by-products plant- but apart from there the only other drops I did with a tanker in the 70s were Bernard Wardle at Caernafon and Ferodo near Bangor. One other place I went was in Bethesda,on the A5,it was a small industrial unit on the r/h side going east, over a narrow bridge. They made paint, special paint for cars IIRC,and took 500 galls of Toluene about three times a year, but their name escapes me,anybody remember it ? There was a disused slate quarry at the back, looked about a thousand feet high and one of the locals who worked at the little factory said “It was all chucked up by 'and you know”.
I once decided to go back empty to Sheffield via the Llanberis Pass,It would be about 1970,I had an AEC MK3 8-legger tanker,a nice scenic run which was made even more interesting when meeting coaches coming t’other way.
hello chris , ob also went to Anglesey with octel , i can remember . Did yo ever go to Synthite at Mold and Grasser at Sandycroft , and their was Neston tar company at Queensferry . thank you Trevor
Chris Webb:
I know Ellesmere Port is not North Wales but not far off,so anybody know if O B Transport is still going, ran tankers out of Stanlow and Associated Octel, same time as Catchpoles.
Chris
offley brothers have long finished ,best remembered for taking octel down to the refineries in west wales ,it was nasty stuff the tanks were in cages should thier be a roll over

Hi Trevor, yes Gwynn Bowen was the mainhaulier out of the Bryngwyn works along with Lloyd brothers and even Joint motorways
I can certainly remember Trevor Morris an immaculate fleet , ican see your point that the Shotton hauliers along with some of those from Shropshire could teach some S Wales hauliers a thing or two about fleet presentation !! regards Keith

Racking my brains to think where Springfields were, I’m sure they were in Ellesmere Port somewhere, Barry, but stand to be corrected. I’m sure an old mate of mine drove for them for a while, but again probably wrong.
As been said, spring fields…aka diesel ■■■■, lived Chester side of Broxton island there was also an owner driver called Steve ■■?, who lived on the estate to the left of a55 just past river dee on the way into shotton, he used to drive for George mayers, he also has an f10. In about 1986 ish.

I used to see a Mayers Atki in Saltney every morning that was covered in a dark red dust, any idea what it carried?
