Same truck working in Saudi
pommy.paul:
Got the brain ticking hereto throw some names to the pictures shown
first one up A673 GGV / 9519 - which we bought from Harwich Haulage (came along with the superstar ■■■■■■ Eric!)
I reckon this photo would have been taken around the era of Myles ‘yes ■■■■’ Lewis (not a relative, unless you’re an employee of P&O - then he’s a brother)
B587 VNF I think was an old Dow truck, its amazing the amount of sand that a cab can hold!
DUG 877Y / 9516 - Simmo (give away being the A1 Trucks Club sticker) - does anyone else remember the Truck Show when Keith spent about a week in the yard polishing, Melly came straight off the boat in Felixstowe to the show and won ~ poor Keith got bugger all! (apart from ■■■■■■ obviously)
A672 GGV / 9510, not sure who had this at the time. Myles had it for a while and managed to “arrange” the speedo for a while - I did a trip in it once while mine was off for something. Couldn’t work out why I was leaving everything for dead going down the A1 while I was only doing 50MPH. The maths kicked in when I managed to do the yard to Felixstowe dock in 3 hours! Thanks ■■■■, always entertaining! Sure Myles didnt have it for this picture as he would not have labelled something 61, hopefully whoever did received the relevent fine.
A346 MAT/9512 (and one of the sisters behind) - that would have been early 80’s. Those 3 trucks were unfortunately the rotating doors of the fleet, had a new driver about every trip - but held up well in the circumstances.
A728 OKH / 9539 - That was after Myles had it, he was the one who washed the ally wheels with alibrite! I reckon thats Dave Bev’s capri next to it■■?
Grimmy and Roy (?) from Hull - for anyone who doesn’t know Grimmy, you should take a trip to Batley - that is one of life’s Mr NiceGuys ~ absolute gentleman who had a heart issue in Lowi Waldkraiburg. Recovered though and went from strength to strength.
D880 was one of Mr Pigg’s old beasts - pictured there I think is one of Mr Blake’s ex drivers who was mad for polishing (as you can see)
DUG 878Y/9517 - that was when Melly had it. RIP Mel, we all miss that big smile…
Tee treble no trouble and Bobby Ewing !! Scammel at the side, I wonder if that was before Deano altered the name on the headboard - swiftly followed by Norman altering his employment status!
E301GJN - I reckon Don Polsen had it around that time. Elvis was with FUG 896Y then, easily spotted by the trail of brill cream to the toolbox
DUG 878Y - that’s our Melly’s again - Correctly labelled at the time (as you would expect from such a professional) Labelling was changed later on, as these things do get updated (anyone remember Praepagen, had more labels than Marks & Spencer)Enough of my ramblings, it’s 3.30pm and we should be around Alconbury now in time for the night boat (well, about 20 years ago anyway!)
Gaz, you must have some more photo’s■■? Do you still have the one you took of Mel painting the Michelin Man with the ■■■ hanging out the side of his mouth?
There’s also that massive photo album we put together for your Dad just after he moved to the Ponderosa - there’d be some memories in that !!!Thanks for the memories folks
Paul.
don’t know any of them (except for mr pigg sort of ,off here) but still made me LOL
Hi
First time I met Simmo was in '84 but from the discussions we had I am very sure that it’s the same guy we are speaking about.
We’re trying to track him down if anyone knows where he is or how we can get a hold of him
Thanks y’all!
Paul.
Hi Sniffy, A couple of stories I remember about Herbert, Herbert as all who knew him liked a drink or two, after a weekend in Grubbers I helped him clear out his truck of empty cans & bottles, there were so many stacked on the dash of the 141 you couldn’t see out of the windscreen in total there were 146, all consumed by Herbert over that weekend. I must have downed 2 gallon of Coca Cola myself that weekend.
Another time after loading at BASF & spending the night in Grubbers together, Herbert made a early start around 4am, I made a start about 6am not long at after when I got to the first services on the motorway, it was still dark but the Norman Lewis livery always stood out day or night, I could see Herbert’s truck straddling the hard shoulder & nearside lane with hazards on so I pulled over onto the hard shoulder some 10 yard behind, I walk up to find what looked like two ghosts down the side of a tilt, It was Herbert & the driver of the tilt who had come out of the services a bit fast & his load of flour had slipped, well lucky for me they had just finished reloading it but they were covered from head to toe in flour, I think of Herbert every time I see a bag of flour Cheers Mel CCK
And the story continues…
3 of the management team that headed Tankfreight when it was at its biggest and best in the 80s and 90s, could bode well for the future ?
I would like to wish Stewart MacDonald, David Brown and Andrew Nicholson all the best for the future, former driver CCK
Wheel Nut:
Hmm! Hydrogen Peroxide, shouldn’t that be 58 on the Kemler plates?
Hi Malc,
Well spotted!!
According to ADR 2009, Hydrogen peroxide (UN 2014) should indeed have a H.I.N of 58.
It might be that the H.I.N. system was a bit different back in the days of a “Y” reg vehicle, or it could be that somebody got the numbers mixed-up.
The “61” on this one will take some explaining though, cos for UN 1590 it should be “60.”
Although I don’t know for sure, my guess is that the “61” means UN Class 6.1, which makes sense, but it would mean that the ‘Kemler’ system has changed and developed over the years.
I’ll ask Kemler next time I see him, cos I’m expecting him back home soon.
I have just received a message that Keith Simpson passed away on Christmas Day
Deepest sympathies to his family.
RIP Blue!

Having a laugh with Simmo, Only meeting up with Blue on a few occasions in Grubbers & on the odd ferry crossing we always had a laugh chin wagging over all the old stories that most of Lewis drivers got themselves into.
Well my last meeting with Simmo was no different, it was day before Christmas Eve there was no loads home for us so we was told to make our way to Euro port park up & come home on the night freighter as foot passengers into Felixstowe & we would get a lift home,
On arriving in Felixstowe around 7-30am we went into the customs hall, right at the far end curled up on the floor was a parker coat with two legs sticking out, I turned to Simmo & said that’s Manny, we walked over shook him back to life hoping he was our lift home, after bringing him round with several black coffees so he could talk he told us the story, he was on the afternoon sailing out off Zeebrugge with 5 other Lewis drivers 3 of which Norman said, he would never let them travel in the same Country again after an earlier escapade several years before, when the shipped docked not one of them could be found, well with four wagons at the front of the ship & two at the back of the ship no one could get off, the night crossing couldn’t dock because the ship was still on the dock non of the drivers when found was in a fit state to drive, some had lost keys Manny had lost all his paper work that was another reason why he was still there.
When we went outside there were 3 Lewis trucks still parked there, another bound for Southampton with Manny & Bill Bolton with a load of Latex for the tank farm on the dock, well Simmo & I took charge of Bill tipped his load then we rang into the office, our sides had been splitting for the past two hours with Manny & Bills story but Normans rant had us in stitches all the way back to Hensall via Newark to drop Simmo Off , the end result was all Norman Lewis tankers were banned on all Townsend Thorensen boats for about 2 weeks.
R.I.P. BLUE GOD BLESS sad you’ve gone but
glad to have known you.
Manny, Mel Carr and Simmo. Three of the best blokes I have ever known. A privilege to have worked with them all.
My last meeting with Keith was about 3 years ago when I came across him in the Woodside Cafe near Goole. I just got this low growl with a smile as I walked around the corner with a mug of tea, “Now blue. I wondered who that might be with the left ■■■■■■.”
I had not noticed his Swiss truck and he was the last bloke I would have expected to see, but I do remember that mug of tea turned into several and I think we were there about 3 hours
Keep smiling and keep laying them domino’s
Malc

If you would have taken a closer look under the carpets Paul you might of found some camel ■■■
Wheel Nut, I am not sure who I was running with on that day or who was driving B587 but you have got to admit it’s a good looking jockey ( oh well maybe not
).
Regards Steve.

Hi Malc, all!
I was upset to read that Simmo has gone on ahead…
However, I thought you might like to see this photo from Grubers Rastatt taken in about 1986.
Just BTW, that’s Sonny Fielder on Keith’s left, who’s also sadly not with us anymore.
Pommy.Paul has reminded me that 2nd from left is Tommy Shuttleworth - thanks Paul!
Also there that morning, but not present for the fry-up was Posh John. Yes - that’s him sparko on a campbed at about 0830 on a Sunday morning, I recall it was about 4am before we retired anyway
So many happy memories, hard to know where to begin, but I’ll add one more pic for now.
Some of you might remember when the Tannoy system was first installed in the Yard; Baz spent half his lunch break in the canteen yelling “PHONE CALL FOR DAVE MARTIN” over and over again. Happy days - and a snap of Dave Martin (t’Monkey) to remind us all!
Look forward to hearing from any of the gang - and you know who you are …
Cheers for now, Simon
Mr Harris how are you doing

Cheers Simon. It was a long time ago now, memories last forever though.
