Is it the m180? The motorway that connects to Scunthorpe. I’ve never known an emptier stretch of motorway and yet it’s a favourite spot for a camera van. That ain’t about safety it’s just easy money.

So I live in New Zealand.
The last few years the police have been exercising their powers of disgretion with a “zero tolerance” toward speeding, propagander to the masses in the form of the usual media drive about how they are going to cut the annual death toll by coming down heavily on the menace to society that is , speeding motorists.
Despite this, the death toll is actually rising. Red faced dibble wont have any of it and still maintain that “speed is a factor” in all accidents.
You often see the unmarked detector vans on an open stretch of highway hid in a bush or on the other side of the brow of a hill. Never near a school or a hospital. It is simply soft target policing, with the emphasis on revenue generation.
If speed kills, then the logical step would be an outright ban on mechanised transport, that way everone will be safe, right■■?

Dr Damon:
The big problem is we cannot let the average driver decide when it is safe to speed.Drivers perceive situations very differently.
eg An 18 year old may think it is perfectly safe to drive in a built up area at 40mph where as a 70 year old would think it highly dangerous.Another example would be a driver that was late would probably risk speeding in an unsuitable area where as if they were on time they might stick to the limit. The bottom line is we have to have speed limits whether we like them or not otherwise the roads would be more lethal than they are now.Drivers cannot control themselves at the best of times.I know people get angry at speed cameras and say it is nothing to do with road safety but they have saved lives and of course caused accidents.eg What do drivers do when they see a camera.Slow down or worse slam the brakes on!
It would be great to see plenty Police back on our roads but the Police like everyone else are struggling financially so at present that option is not really feasable.
Sorry but speed is quite often a big contributor to road accidents.
What solution do you have?
I agree, the average driver shouldn’t be able to decide when its safe to speed but surveys show 80%+ (not sure of official stats but I’m sure its higher so i’ll be conservative) admit to speeding anyway regardless and I doubt the majority have killed anyone or even been in an accident due to excessive speed exclusively.
Would you attribute that to luck or what? why aren’t there bodies and wreckages around every corner if so many admit flouting the law and speeding?
contrary to popular belief, the driving standards here are very high and the UK has some of the safest roads in the World (3rd last time I checked), how is this possible if so many people admit to speeding? After all, it kills and contributes to accidents right?
its a money spinner, and a very effective one at that because its so easy to enforce, you don’t even need officers
I think we may be getting our wires crossed Andie.I agree the cameras make money but if you break the speed limit be prepared to pay.If you do not want a fine then do not speed.
Safest roads Andie? No road is safe with bad drivers and if as you say the UK is full of good drivers you are seriously deluded.
Regarding accidents it is definitely luck there are not more.Travel down any motorway and you see many drivers that are an accident waiting to happen.A lot are like sheep as someone else mentioned and they follow blindly. Most of the time they get away with their complacency but when something unexpected happens there is carnage everywhere.
I was involved in a bad accident a few years ago. Ironically a retired doctor did not stop at a stop junction and wiped out my car and his own. Both vehicles wrecked but we walked away with cuts and bruises. Now that was luck as we could have all been brown bread.
I wish I had a picture to show.
Probably about 95% of drivers think they are above average but in reality they are usually below average and probably the same amount that have been involved in an accident thought it would never happen to them.It can happen to anyone anytime and the faster you are going generally the more damage you do.As I said in my first post keep the fines coming in,raise them higher and catch as many as possible. It seems at the moment the only way to deal with selfish drivers.
Damon.
If ya can’t do the time…

Catching speeders by hiding in bushes does nothing to improve road safety. Yet these are the tactics the police are resorting to. Sending someone a letter telling them they were caught speeding three days ago is pointless, because if speeding WAS so dangerous, they should be dead by then.
Like I said, a speeding fine is a voluntary tax, I’ve never paid it. But if it really is about safety, it isn’t working.

Fully agree.
The powers be laud it as a success as the sheeple blindly follow the doctorine but in effect all that has happend is brute force tactics has the mass populice just more afraid of big brother.
Speed is ALWAYS a factor in accidents, like I said before, when was the last time anyone saw a pile up of parked cars.
Oh and for the record, who says I speed?? Clean licence and accident free for over 20 years.
I do though, think it is not a problem, when the circumstances allow to put your foot in it.

It looks like snowman was correct about attitudes to speeding.Let’s look at your scenario from a different angle.
Pc Plod hiding in the bushes(which they are not allowed to do by the way)I would imagine you say that because your observation is not good enough to see them in time.Anyway I digress Pc plod is there hiding in the bushes on a straight 30mph road.Vehicles doing 30 have no problem.Boy racer comes along at say 45mph and gets caught. Now you tell me that they should just ignore that.
The next time an innocent pedestrian could be mowed down by that selfish driver or one of the many others that think they are safe to speed.
As I said any motorist that breaks the law cannot complain when they get caught. They are a danger to themselves and others.
As you say probably 99 times out of 100 nothing happens but when something does it can cause devastation for a whole family.
I just hope it never happens to your or Andies family.

Well Andie I am obviously not getting my point over to you or caveman.I am done with this but just want to say I hope you do not learn the hard way about what excess speed can do as many have in the past.
Education is the key.
Life’s a risk. And NO ONE get’s out alive.
The first motor vehicle death in the UK couldnt have been more than 10mph.
What is “safe”?

I can tell you what is not safe…
An awful lot of drivers.
They take unesscesary risks everyday until one day it all goes wrong.

A higher profile police presence may well dissuade people from taking risks, but they seem more intent on catching people doing stupid things than preventing them.
Unfortunately the majority of people are not capable of self policing themselves ergo it is up to the real police to do it. A fully marked up police patrol vehicle influences the behaviour of every vehicle in its vicinity ( just check out how many more BMW’s use their indicators when a patrol car is around!) whereas an unmarked car only influences the behaviour of one vehicle at a time, usually the one it’s just pulled over.
We all know the answer, but as usual it’s a funding issue. Either the Govt are serious about traffic laws or they’re not.
Why will I be shocked? I have completed Police Class 1 training on a motorcycle.
Police are highly trained drivers.Lorry drivers are not.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
sure looks like that police training is worth every penny…
Unrestricted sections of German Autobahn, parts of the US where lorries can do 80mph and so on must be just a sea of death and destruction.
I can’t believe the limit is as high as 70, yes 70mph on the motorway here!!!1!1!1!!! When will the government step in and make the entire country a 20mph limit, enforced by radar controlled sentry guns and fining the next 3 generations of a family. When will people learn that the only way to be safe is to blindly follow one-size-fits-all rules, it’s nothing to do with increasing the quality of training.
I always remember this saying - speeding fine coffers are funded by volunteers
We all proved that we can stick to the limits when we passed the test(s) so that saying is spot on
It wasn’t long ago if you went over 40 on a A road in a hgv you were “speeding” yet the law changed to 50 without any additional training or road improvements.
ajt:

^^^^^^^^^+1
which means that■■?
I’m gonna go ahead and suggest technology advancement in vehicle design and improvment in roading engineering, then a several year study in risk assesment came to the conclusion that 50mph is now deemed safe. Even though most people did it anyway.
I haven’t completed any police training whatsoever and yet still managed to drive heavy trucks all over the world…probably just dumb luck on my part.
ajt:

Hang on fella…That was to help the poor sods stuck behind rather than to benefit truck drivers.

So by that logic perhaps our limiters could be reset to 70mph to help all the poor sods stuck behind on dual carriageways!
Oh, btw, welcome back Albion.
