Thanks again for all your replies. Shame about the Hino but they really do seem to thirsty devils (wonder why). I have been talking to Scania, Volvo and Renault and I am struggling to make a decision. Lead time for a Volvo is now aprox six months. Hammer I left Tarmac two and a half years ago, sold the Volvo to another o/d it has been sold again since.
A lad in Colne has been trying to order a FM, but they have said Sept for a 4 axle chassis. By the time he has put a crane and beavertail on it, it would be 2014
Daf are quoting May delivery for the current shape
do not panic Mucker optidrive (i-shift) all the way. I had a version two in a volvo a few years ago they are now v.four should be good.

good good… The manual that was fitted in the lander I used to drive was quite possibly the WORST manual gearbox I have ever had the displeasure to use.

thanks again folk, i ordered a Renault premium lander 430 this morning. I will let you know how it goes.
please say you haven’t ordered a manual gearbox.
I`ve got manual in my 2011 430 Lander, its brilliant. Some lads have auto and they are happy too. Ordered a new Lander for September that will be Auto.
My manual has better fuel consumption than the autos though. At 56mph 16 speed manual is at 1100 rpm and 12 speed Auto is at 1450rpm.
That is very interesting mixer driver two who is your dealer and what has back been like. Have you taken the extended warranty.

Renault Cardiff… Back up has been excellent. No problems with the truck at all apart from 5 visits for the same fault soon after it was delivered. There was a split olive in the turbo oil feed that was passing oil and burning on the turbo.
i bought the extended warranty, worth every penny. It will be a good selling point for me when its Sold in August. I`m replacing it with the same model before Euro 6 comes out.
I have been discussing servicing with the supplying dealer today, he tells me they intend change the engine oil every 100000Kms or 12months. I feel this is a long time (to long) for a construction vehicle. I await your thoughts again please.

Changed mine at 12 months annual service…50000kms
There is an old saying in the haulage industry " oil is cheaper than metal ".
Ours have oil and filters every 18 weeks regardless.
After another chat with my dealer they have agreed to drop the oil twice a year (aprox 40,000kms).

Don’t forget engine hours which you can access on the dash display - 1 Hour = 50 Kms
We look after a sewage tanker that’s done just over 100,000 Kms but if you work it out on engine hours it equals just short of 165,000 Kms.
We also do some low mileage vehicles 40 - 50,000 Kms annually and we service these every 2 years at MOT without any engine problems at all (oldest is Feb 2007 registered)

Don’t know if this is true.
I was in KTS Renault having a chat last weekend, an old friend of theirs popped in, he was ribbing them that his new Mercedes gets 11mpg, but then he said that his boss had tried to get an oil change done early but that Sparshatt’s said that Mercedes didn’t allow early oil changes.
He then said that Mercedes charge £160 a litre for oil when they do change it.
Young Tom at KTS tells me that my Renault needs 33 litres of oil at an M1 service so that would be £5,000 plus filters and labour for an oil change on a Mercedes. I just can’t believe that this is true?

I cant see the oil being that price Harry. My Renault Lander was also 33 litres of oil. I havnt got the invoice to hand to itemise the oil but I
m sure it was £500plus. First service was £733+vat. I also had air filter and labour inclusive.
Truck has a seperate engine meter because its a mixer chassis which does a lot of labouring while idle
Good grief this certainly makes my servicing cotract look VERY cheap. I buy expensive oil (fully synth euro5 low ash) at £85 for 25 ltrs for my Daf.
Considering we’re only on short journeys most of the time I don’t lke leaving oil in my lorry too long, it used to be changed every third inspection on my previous lorries but this Volvo I have now would only be done at 12 months or 100,000 klms if Volvo were doing it. So I have it changed it twice a year & use Volvo oil and filters, without digging out the invoice, I think the Oil was VDS4 and cost just over £3 a litre.

As a matter of interest, do any of you tipper/mixer boys use oil analysis
The kind of environment you lot work in is very hard on oil, lots of urban work, so lots of soot from combustion, high percentage of idle, so increased possibility of fuel dilution and also high concentrations of silicon (dirt) from the dusty environment, which will tell you the state of your air filtration and intake system
Also, do any of use a washable air filter, like a K&N type, or do you just use the factory ones
I don’t know anybody who has their oil tested or use fancy air filters it sounds like a bit of a performance. Please tell me more.
