New 8x4 tipper

andrew.s:
just had an alternator go on the hino i drive, wait for it £1500 for a new one from dealer!!! and thats not a fitted price either…i thought our fitter had got it wrong when he told me the price.sure one for my old daf was £400.
and its shocking on fuel.its is a grab though,so a lot of time with engine powering pto,but much worse on juice than any other motor ive had in recent years

Most tippers spend quite a bit of time powering the PTO for the body though, my dad gets about 9 out of the DAF but he’s beyond the age for tearing around like he’s on fire which helps a lot

yes but sometimes on a grab the engine can be powering the pto for up to two or three hrs a day, hence only 6 odd mpg!!

remember me hammer spoke to you at liverpool recycling had a volvo then

Yes mate, was a while ago now.

You’ve left Ta*mac then? Still got the Volvo?

had a hino on demo cupl years back now but it was a dieselaholic!! was doing local tipper work and got below 6mpg. had iveco at same time it was doing over 7mpg on exact same job

Thanks again for all your replies. Shame about the Hino but they really do seem to thirsty devils (wonder why). I have been talking to Scania, Volvo and Renault and I am struggling to make a decision. Lead time for a Volvo is now aprox six months. Hammer I left Tarmac two and a half years ago, sold the Volvo to another o/d it has been sold again since.

The DAF not making the shortlist? If we were buying now it’d be a CF85.410 with a manual. Ours has been pretty much faultless for the last 8 years!

I’d go along with that too. I drive for a lad whose got five and they are pretty good. A bit dated perhaps, noiser and less classy than the Volvo but a good solid tool for what remains a pretty simple job. Better on the juice too, in my experience Daf’s are usually top of the class on diesel.

I drive a Volvo fairly regular and they’re nice to drive (box is a bit stiff) but the Daf’s a pretty tidy all rounder.

Having said that Renault seem to be hoovering up a lot of sales. Here for example. commercialmotor.com/latest-n … s-to-fleet If you’re getting a Volvo driveline for a massive discount whats not to like?

Reading these posts it strikes me that there was a lot to be said for the Foden eight leggers! A chap runs out of Longcliffe quarries with a Hino now, it replaced a Foden that he had for many years, but I haven’t got a clue how he rates it. The old Hino’s were popular for muckshifting work where I suppose payload wasn’t a big issue but they seem thin on the ground these days.

Pete.

The Euro 3 Hino was thirsty but the Euro 4 is better on fuel. The Hino is a good tipper, just need to find the right dealer! Strong truck & you can get a great payload with the right spec, also very little electrics & quite simple to fix.

Is Volvo still quoting for Euro5? If it’s 6 month lead time.
I had Euro 5 FM with add blue but had alot of trouble with the add blue system in cold weather.

I bought a new FM with ishift & a 460 engine on a 60 plate. It’s a nice lorry with a lovely gearbox but in my opinion it’s not put together as well as the Scania it replaced. To be honest, I only went for the Volvo because it was a lot cheaper than the Scania but, given my time over again, given the way the work and rates are I wouldn’t have either but, IF I did buy one I’d have the Scania even if it was with the manual box to keep the price down a bit.

I’ve only had three new ones but I’ve always bought my lorries with resale in mind. The way I think about it is, if I wouldn’t want it second hand I won’t buy it new. It’s no good buying a cheap new lorry if you’re never going to be able to sell it.

The Scania I was comparing quotes with the Volvo was a G cab Sleeper 420 Egr with the new two pedal opticruise with the superb Scania retarder, I don’t know what that gearbox is like but the £5,000 price option for it at the time put me right off.

The Volvo was the FM 13litre 460Bhp ishift Sleeper cab, the ishift was standard and it came out a lot less than the Scania so I went for it. The only difference I’d have now if I bought another FM is I’d have the Globetrotter cab on it because I feel restricted for space compared to my old 04 Reg R cabbed Sleeper Scania which was a dam good lorry. I’d still go for the George Neville electric sheeter, I believe they’re the best out there and now they’re made with Aluminium bulkheads they’ll be lighter. Bristol tipper bodies who now also make and fit the Easysheet down in Radstock are lovely people a pleasure to deal with.

I was talking to someone yesterday who has just ordered a new 8x4 FM the night before, they were told it won’t be here until October and possibly November because they’re selling a lot of lorries to try and beat the Euro 6 price increase which I understand will effect all manufacturers. If you want to order one to beat euro 6 you need to get your thinking cap on. I’d love to order one but I’m afraid I don’t have the confidence in the job to do it.

Best of luck, perhaps you’d let us know how you get on and what you decide to order.

Payload of 19.7T these days with pig pee and all the other garbage… Lost 2 tonnes since 2005!

Thanks again for all your thoughts. I am going to look at scania and renault chassis’s on Saturday morning. The renault comes with a five year warranty for about £3.5k less than the scania that only has two years warranty. The Reno comes the with the fantastic I- shift gearbox the scania is a manual, the scania auto does not seem to be as good. The Reno is reputed to very good on fuel which I feel will out weigh any resale problems. In answer to you Dew I feel the Daf is a good truck but overpriced and quiet agricultural in comparison. Those weightlifter bodies you highlighted must be very heavey because the lander chassis is infact quiet light. (Is your Dad called Kevin).

Went jds trucks at Blackburn this morning, very impressed the chassis is all volvo the cab interior is different but no problem. I then travelled with the salesman to meet another local operator with two lander units on the road they were 0.5mpg better than the rest of the fleet mostly daf 105.460.then i went to Preston scania unfortunately the salesman was not about (he said he would be) but had a good look round on my own. This chassis seems old fashioned in comparison, grease nips everywhere (is that good or bad ? )At this time I really fancy the renault.

thanks again folk, i ordered a Renault premium lander 430 this morning. I will let you know how it goes.

Out of interest where you getting the body built?

Tony Hayton at Arkholme

Exactly who I was going to suggest  Good lad

If you are getting stuff serviced at JDS Blackburn, make sure you check they have greased everything. A mate of mine had 4 rigids on contract hire, that was the only fault he had with them.

please say you haven’t ordered a manual gearbox.
