Woman and boy die, driver in custody.
Sad news, RIP
I’m not making presumptions without knowing the facts but the photos speaks for itself without any one presuming. The HGV carrying timber has absolutely PLOUGHED into the back if the car to fold it up like that.
When you look at how close everyone drives to each other it is amazing crashes like this aren’t much more frequent.
Everyone just belting along thinking nothing has gone wrong before so why would it today?
All it takes is someone to need to stop suddenly for WHATEVER reason and people die. When everyone is so close it’ only going one way.

I see what you’re…
Saying but, I dont think the HGV was close. I think he’s been plodding away from a long way back and failed to notice the slow or stationary traffic and ploughed into it.
My condolances to all involved.

Of course. Without knowing the facts I’m not saying he was too close. I’m saying generally everyone is too close to each other so it’s surprising this doesn’t happen more. Whether the HGV is this situation was too close or failed to see stationary traffic, either way he has ploughed into the car at speed. That’s the only fact I know from the photos.
This has been an accident waiting to happen since weeks before Christmas , one of the busiest junctions on an all be it quiet motorway has had cones sectioning of one lane for none existent roadworks all turning a two lane junction into one lane down to a busy roundabout, traffic has been backing onto the carriage way for weeks ,I have witnessed many near misses here.
any one who travels this road regularly will know that in bright conditions your vision can be seriously restricted early morning.
hopefully highways England will have questions to answer as part of any investigation about why the lane restriction has been in place with no speed restriction on the carriageway and nothing was being done about an obvious problem.

My sentiments exactly. They never learn from it unfortunately.
I actually know this boy that was killed.
14 year old lad from Radcliffe and his carer, both died on impact.
His older brother is best friends with my eldest lad, he is round at their house now.
Sad news indeed, RIP Joe
Very sad
Another Dangerous Truck Driver not concentrating. Sadly Truck drivers will never be seen as professionals when these type of accidents keep happening. The minority spoiling the image of truckers.

You don’t know what’s happened… Truck driver could have had a heart attack… Could have had complete brake failure… Could be anything!

Not the kind of thread for speculation really.
2 people have lost their lives that’s the most important thing at the moment.
Just because the driver has been arrested doesn’t prove any guilt as yet so let’s not crucify the guy right now. Let the judicial process follow its course and the outcome will probably come to light when the full facts have been investigated.
As said could be many reasons for the crash, only those there really know what happened.
I am amazed that the mini bus has collapsed the way it has, if it was snadwiched between two trucks I could understand the devastation, but with only cars up front?

A truck fully loaded with scaffolding isn’t going to be the lightest thing on the roads.
I was involved in the second accident further down the queue, I slowed down to a stop in lane 1, lanes 2 and 3 weren’t backed up as much and cars were still flying past me, then a Fraikin rigid who hadn’t seen that we were stopped ploughed into the car behind me then swerved into the central reservation taking out about 4 or 5 more cars and vans, it was a hell of an impact because the back of my trailer was completely wiped out and there was another car rammed into my offside underrun bars, lots of people trapped inside cars it was not nice, regarding the Fraikin driver, no heart attack, no brake failure just sheer lack of concentration

Is this the 31 year old from Chorley that was arrested?

no this was the second crash further back
This common situation where exiting traffic is queueing stationary in a live lane has got to be addressed - not only is this traffic at danger of collision from the gormless you also get the last minute swervers into lane two. Or probably worse the drivers who come to a stand in lane two trying to push into the queue.
Surely traffic coming off on a slip road should be given extra priority at the junction/roundabout at the end of it - more so if there is roadworks.

Too many people, not enough room, it will not change, merely become worse and thus, more dangerous.

Yeah, I totally agree. They put these roadworks in place which is obviously going to cause tailbacks but don’t adjust the traffic light sequencing to accommodate.
