My first day class 2 driving

After I had passed my class C on the 19th, I decided to register with a local agency in Barnsley. Imagine my total and utter shock when they asked if I would like to do a double manned night run to Glasgow for John Dennis in Barnsley…oooer! :open_mouth:

I found myself saying yes to this offer, as I didn’t want to appear ungrateful (after all how many “newbies” get offers like this after only holding their licence for only 4 hours!

The job started at 12.30am but I arrived there at 12.00am to introduce myself, find the driver who I would be working with and have a look at the lorry. I was told that we would be leaving a little late as the chilled goods hadn’t arrived from Liverpool so it was cup of coffee time, refuel the fridge tank with red and a tankful of white for the 54 plate MAN.

The chilled stuff finally arrived at about 02.00am, after a quick load we were on our way for 02.30, at long last! I took the first stint at driving and made sure I took my time. Don’t want any ■■■■-ups on my very first shift!

We swapped over after I had done about 4 hours driving and the other bloke took over to drive to the supermarkets in the surrounding areas of Glasgow. We seemed to be dashing about all over the place from one area then back to the other, which I thought was a bit of a waste of time but I didn’t bother saying anything as I didn’t want to appear a know all. We did one drop in Glasgow, then an hours drive for the next drop, then back into Glasgow for another three drops? Would have been better to deliver to the furthest first, then work back me thinks.

Last drop was 12.45. We had a 45 minute break before heading for home. My turn to drive again and we decided I’d do the first 2 and a half hours then the other bloke would take over. After an uneventful journey back we finally arrived back at the yard at 18.30, making an 18 hour shift for me.

The other driver said they might offer me a full time job as they are desperate for drivers, I’m not surprised with the wages they pay. £5.65 for 7.5 tonners, £5.85 for class 2, not sure what the class 1’s get but if the other pay structure is anything to go by it won’t be sparkling.

They also pay to upgrade class 2’s to class 1, but they will contract you for at least a year,.no thanks I don’t fancy that idea so I’ll finance it myself I think.

I got paid £9 per hour from the agency as it was classed as a night shift, and time 1.5 after 8, so a nice earner for the first day.

Overall though a very good shift and I enjoyed the run and the experience.

Well done for taking the bull by the horns and jumping straight in there! Best way to do it in my opinion, if you get the opportunity that is.

Sounds like you had a good run, nice one!

At least you got some experience and at least you were not thrown in all by yourself.
Well done for getting stuck in straight away.

Sounds like you had a good first shift but the wages the firm pay direct and the wages earned through an agency shows why agency work rules!

All the best with the next one!

Well done for getting straight in there a mere 4 hours after getting hold of your licence - probably the nearest anyone would get to that saying “the ink’s not even dry on yer licence yet!!”

As for the ‘dashing about all over the place’ maybe it was timed deliveries but the other driver didn’t tell you? Maybe he was just lost . . . . .

I hope you gave the agency a rollicking for taking so long to find you some work :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Well done

Nice one, a nice 18 hour shift to start off with, not to metion a few bob to go with it   Keep up the good work   :grimacing: :grimacing:

Well done for getting out there, but…

Do I understand your post to mean that you took your test on the 19th and drove the same day?
Did you read the bit on the Test Pass Certificate that says that it isn’t a licence and that you must send the Pass Cert to the DVLA and wait for your licence to be issued before you drive?

DId the agency not query this with you?

I hope I misunderstood.

ssssssshhhhhhh Fred…

Actually thinking about it…(and checking my licence )…I passed my C1 on the 20th Dec 2005…and was out on the road…on me own on the 23rd…

U sure about your facts Fred■■?

I pretty sure you dont sent the certifiate off anymore, after reading a post by ‘wills’

And why is your licence valid when you do get it from the day you passed   :bulb: :bulb: :grimacing: :grimacing:

If you pass and have a photocard driving licence issued after 1 March, 2004 the examiner will ask you if you want your full driving licence issued to you automatically.

If you want to use this service, the examiner will take your old licence off you, scan the details and send them electronically to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You will then be given a pass certificate to prove you passed your test. DVLA will then send you your new full licence by post within three weeks of you passing your practical test.

If you pass your test but do not want to use this automatic service, or have a licence issued before 1 March 2004, you will be given a pass certificate by the examiner. On the back of the pass certificate it tells you what you need to do next. This involves sending your licence and appropriate fee to DVLA who will then check your application and issue you with a new full licence.

I understand that you can drive on your pass certificate for up to twelve months before receiving your actual licence. Unless that has changed I believe it is still legal.
Mosts people who pass their B (car) test usually rip up the L plates on the spot and drive home - so it is the same with a truck.

I have a photocopy of my pass certificate (dated june 2002) and it does state in bold print “Your test pass certificate is not a licence to drive”

Thanks for all the replies.

I have included in this post a copy of my test pass certificate (including the notes at the rear) Nowhere does it state I must not drive until I get my licence back (although it does state that it is NOT a licence to drive) The examiner asked if I would like him to send my licence off to DVLA, to which I replied yes but he made no mention about NOT driving a class C vehicle.

As far as I know the certificate is to prove that I can indeed drive a class C vehicle in case I get stopped by the police or VOSA?

I’m sure that someone who knows a lot more than me will correct me if I’m wrong, but surely once you have passed a test you should be entitled to drive, even though your licence is “away” for its new entitlement to be added?

You do realise that now you’ve published that on here for all to see that that certificate with the same number will undergo continual name changes and re-appear starting with zorber the greek to ivan the terrible. :open_mouth:

The Wroding is:-
‘You must exchange it (the pass certificate) for a licence showing your full entitlement within 2 years of passing your test, If you do not do this you will lose your right to claim entitlement to drive the catagory covered by the licence.’
So YES you CAN drive as I said earlier - my mistake was that I understood it to be twelve months and it has now changed to two years.

Good thinking!!!

Look at it again :sunglasses:

I’ll stand by what I wrote.

It’s a mistake I made a while ago, but not one that I’ll repeat.

“You must exchange it (the pass certificate) for a licence showing your full entitlement within 2 years of passing your test, If you do not do this you will lose your right to claim entitlement to drive the catagory covered by the licence.”

And I’ll agree with you 100% Fred.

My licence will be winging its way to me very shortly as my examiner has done the neccessary there for me…
