motorway signs

‘Could all BMW drivers stop being utter [zb] on the road’

I must say that when faced with a tractor today on a dual carriageway a friendly BMW driver let me out. Probably not his own car though but non the less I was most surprised and gratefull.

Course I would have let him / her past till a safe lane change was available

Must have been someone on a test drive looking for an upgrade from a Rover

I’m sick of passing a junction with nothing ahead in sight, then rounding the next corner to see red tail lights stopped in all lanes… A warning on the gantries would have been nice - instead of the “A21 closed at A2100” which was getting on for a hundred miles away from where I was coming east on the M4…

Then you’ve got those “J15 - 10 miles 10 minutes” signs that assume EVERYONE is doing exactly 60mph…

Managed Speed Limits that never seem to zap the boy racer speeding through doing a ton, and “lane closed” signs being ignored by all during the rush hour… Closely folloed by “Red X means closed - don’t use it!” wasting yet more gantry space that could actually be used to say something useful, like a warning of a jam less than 10 miles away on the same, or one road off where you are now… :imp:

How much longer will it be until we start getting “Happy Birthday Mable Lobb” coming up? :unamused:

I just laugh at those signs TBH although I do worry a little that people are reminded to do basic things like “check your fuel” and “Don’t Tailgate” as those that normally DO tailgate and don’t check their fuel are probably unaware of these signs, don’t indicate, apply brakes for no apparent reason etc. etc,

The sign that really infuriates me though is the ones like that on the side of a trailer travelling south on the A1 which says in large letters “Earn £900 per week as a HGV driver”. I think the trainers/agency responsible for this sign should be arrested immediately for inciting people trafficking as that is the only way you are going to earn over £43,000 per annum as a lorry driver. :unamused: :unamused:

I’ll pick on your post as you are the most arrogant and irresponsible of all the reply’s thus far.

Would a reply to my post last night be out the question?

Looks like that was a no then. I get the impression he patrols the North side of the 25 and possibly the lower section of the M1 so was genuinely interested to see if it was him I saw and if he was aware of exactly what the signs said on the approach to him. Guess we’ll never know.

If a muslim’s on the h/s with a flat tyre, shouldn’t it be their religious duty to blow it up themselves?

+1… do these gobsits actually believe the rubbish they spout, can they actually be brainwashed to that degree■■?

Left hand down!:

Holy thread resurrection,

Anyway, so I’m at a lane closure to help a tyre fitter get home to his family. The control room sets a lane 1 closure but we decide it is too dangerous to put out a closure. We then come up with a plan but that isn’t important, well it is but not on here.

The issue, a lane 1 closure is set on the signals 1 miles prior to us, I film the traffic for 1 minute whilst stood well out of the way, in 60 seconds 18 cars, trucks and vans come at us in lane 1 56 + mph, had we put any kit out, no doubt we would have had cone and sign strikes at best or an RTC.

Thanks to the Fowler Welch driver who appears around said bend at 56 in lane 1, sees that AT THAT SPLIT SECOND IN TIME that no cones are out and waves his arms in disgust at me as if to say “So where’s the feeccking closure then”. Clearly absolutely and totally no consideration for one second that,

A. I had just put the cones away and the signs were in the process of being turned off,
B. That I was just about to put them out and would have been stood in lane 1 whilst he put my life at risk,
C. That he had ignored the sign put on to protect me whilst I put the kit out in the first place.

He would have had no time AT ALL to move from 1 to 2 at 56 mph with a carriageway full of traffic. There is no point in shouting on here that drivers, especially professional drivers have a lot to answer for as not many truckers actually care a [zb] about us, if nothing more its just to highlight, in the 5 seconds you pass us, you have no clue on whats really going on.

Don’t put my life at risk just because your’e too bone idol to drive with safety and courtesy. If the cap fits,

Get out of the [zb] job then :unamused: . You go on and on and on about how some artic has always just nearly killed you, but yet you continue going to the same job every day putting yourself in the same situation :unamused: . Anyone with even the smallest amount of common sense would by this point have told themselves “hey I’m not cut out for this, I’m gonna get myself killed, I’m out” but clearly you weren’t in the queue when common sense was being handed out. Thick as [zb]. :unamused:

years ago before the dudly doogood highways agency was invented, you broke down, got a puncture, and nobody gave a toss.and at that point the gridlock, tailbacks were bad enough…now that someone invented the plobbers ,then as soon as the rupert brigade appear in the ( how close do you need to get to me before you can see im not a plod car and overtake me anyway) brigade appear with flashing strobes and hi viz undies on instant 6 lane gridlock rubber necking to see what tyre someone has a puncture on.miles of tailback for ■■■ all…if your bad enough to get any help from the info signs, then your obviously bad enough for the info to go in one eye and straight out your ear, hence no use at all. i would think this following link sums up exactly just how much use the highways agencey are. i.e…■■■■ on a bull…the info signs are as much use as a chocolate teapot, and if they serve any purpose at all, then its to gridlock traffic more than normal, with as much irritation as possible for being just another example of milions of goverment cash, straight down the drain…and could someone win a coconut for the best info warning for this one?..youtube.com/watch?v=9-bIWm08eJc useless jobsworth incompetents…with the wifey out in front in a league of her own.if you had to depend on this level of incompetence to assist you, then you might as well just run into the middle lane with your eyes shut… :open_mouth:

Had a bad day DD?

nope, just stating a fact,( from my … :unamused: point of view I suppose)

We managed perfectly fine without you lot for years, we can manage without you now, you’re not some kind of super hero, swooping down to rescue people, you cause more jams and “incidents” than you clear, bunch of wannabe coppers. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

I don’t swoop anywhere, I’ve had more thanks than I’ve been slagged off, I’m no wannabe, been there, done that and recorded the statements and done the casefiles. I’m happy doing what I am.

Funny, the tyre fitters that are pretty much ensured that they will go home now don’t seem to feel the same, the car drivers who we tow from lane 4 onto the hard shoulder don’t seem to feel the same either, the trucker who’s gearbox fails in lane 2 and causes miles of congestion who we now clear on the shoulder with our towing device, they don’t seem to mind us, nor the families who have broken down and have kids in 30 degree heat who we take off to the services, they don’t feel the same, nor the thousands and thousands of drivers trapped in traffic due to a fatal that otherwise would have sat there for 6 hours now being turned around by us, they don’t feel the same, nor the people who want to change their own tyre but are worried they might get hit by a truck who’s driver isn’t paying attention so we sit and give them some protection (Which is what they ask for), they don’t feel the same, nor the Police who used to deal with mundane things that we now do, they don’t seem to mind, nor the people stuck in a queue where debris is in the road and rather than someone stop and move it, they just drive around it hoping someone else will stop, and the people who have been involved in an RTC that we get first to, sometimes 20 minutes quicker than an ambulance who we help as best we can, they don’t seem to mind, nor the people that are warned of a queue ahead, heed the warning and slow who may have otherwise been involved in a crash, nor the people who break down in a live lane and the RCC set signs to get LAW ABIDING drivers out of it to reduce the risk of them getting crashed into, they don’t seem to mind us either, nor the truckers driving along who have flats and are at risk of catching fire that we stop, they don’t mind either.

Super hero? No, here to help as best I can? Yep. Wanna be Copper? Nope, believe in people obeying the law? Yep.

Well said jase.
You do a job which is to try keep folk safe…
The signs might be a bit out of date. So what it’s a warning of what might be.
Would rather have an out of date sign then no warning of a possible hazard. Then steam up to it on cc and have to pull an emergancy manouver.

To those who knock the ha. Just think you might jusr need them 1 day

Anyhoo, back to Motorway signs… Yesterday I ran down the A1 (M) near Boroughbridge after the earlier problems had been resolved and as I crawled past two separate matrix’s flashing “40” I noticed with interest that as we reached the one flashing “end” the traffic miraculously sped up and disappeared.

This got me wondering if these signs were actually a self fulfilling prophecy, and what would have happened if the signs just flashed “end” all the time? Maybe an experiment would be a good idea?

So come on Jase, where’s the video you made? I’ve also asked you a question which you have so far not answered despite returning to this thread a couple of times.
How do you know the control have set a lane closed sign instead of a reduced speed limit - if you come across an incident and radio it in theres no way you know that the signs say what you’ve requested them to.

Previous sign may have been faulty Jase, I’ve lost count of the amount of times that’s happened to me :imp:

My hero, swoon :imp: :imp: :imp:

I passed a sign last week on M5 North, it said ’ This is not a sign '. That’s really helpful.
