MK1 & MK11 Atkinsons,a class on their own

Bewick:
We’ve got the ERF thread but how about one for Atkis which IMHO were superior to anything that came out of Sandbach! Ooh! I can just hear the Foden enthusiasts fireing up the Two Strokes!!! But sorry lads the Foden couldn’t hold a candle to the ERF never mind the Atkinson! Let hostilities comence!! Cheers Dennis.

Ulster ferry transport preston docks had mk1 atkis ( I was dock shunter 1965 -69)any one got any U.F.T. pics.My third unit when i joined Northern ireland trailers was an atkinson 205 ■■■■■■■ fuller box,did 49-50 mph (quite fast after the erf 150 gardener 40mph)thought it was a great truck and still do.Incidentally N.I.T. had one foden two stroke remember it sounded great.

here’s one in a lovely Brunswick green

Stobarts probably owned the largest fleet of Atkinsons in ■■■■■■■■ and they probably did most of the haulage in and out of ■■■■■■■ in the 70’s + 80’s as well.

Yes they were all made by corgi!!

The only true fact on these quote is the corgi one.The company in question did for many a fine haulage contractors, didnt like them when i first saw them (who are they) 30 odd years later like them even less.

I remember Reg Jones telling me about the Foden - I think he was quite impressed with it. Never seen a photo, though.

Thanks for that, I thought the reg looked like one T H Browns. They ran a good Atkinson fleet at one time and I would think that would be one of the last that they put on the road, going mainly onto artics about that period.

Cheers Bassman

T H Browns ran some 8 wheelers until 89/90 but changed to mostly Fodens, Scania’s and the odd Seddon Atkinson and DAF although like you say the fleet was mostly artics but here’s one of our later defenders.

Here’s one of T H Browns after a slight problem with a tipping ram.

i go up to Grimsby most days, and i’ve yet to see any of Browns Atkinsons flying about :frowning:

hiya,
I’ll just get my hi-vis and I’ll give you a ring when I’m empty.

  Unfortunately you’ll be hard pressed to find a T H Browns Atki / Foden / Leyland / Albion / Vabis / ERF / DAF / Seddon Atki or Scania anywhere nowadays unless there is one in preservation somewhere that i don’t know about. The last of the fleet was sold 6+ years ago although the company (T H Brown Ltd) still exists it is no longer involved in transport at all.

I like this advert

So do I, Steve. With one exception, the horse would have beaten all the Atkis that I drove!

Unfortunately the Atki cab was rather fragile should you be involved in an accident.
Note the fleet number :exclamation:

Hmmm… Tom should have taken a leaf out of the Bowker book: no fleet numbers ending in 13!

11, 12, 14, 15, etc… even 112 and the next was 114, 212 followed by 214 etc

hiya,
This “old girl” was quite new to the fleet when I did my stint at Riding’s.

Hi. Tommy Browns Old Guy

I thought that TH Browns had until a year or so ago when I came off the road, a few Scania,s with powder tanks on the Huntsman job. I could be mistaken but that job was a Tommy Brown staple for many years.
To me TH Browns was one of Grimsby,s finest, along with McVeigh,s and Humber Warehousing.
A lot of the Grimsby area haulage scene owes a lot to Tommy Brown, Joe McVeigh and Geoff Hallam, proper transport men

Cheers. Bassman

Hi Bassman,

Yes!! you are right there!! It was a staple of Brown’s for many many years! You just got me thinking, and boy how time has flown!! 11years since my ol dad retired, coming up 3 years since we lost him and fast approaching 5 years since Tioxide Grimsby ceased production. I bet there was at least one T H Brown vehicle in and out of there for nearly every day of Tioxides 60 years of production. DE RIJKE took the tanker work of us in 2004 and bought the S reg vehicles and the powder tanks from us to do the job, even employing our drivers under the TUPEE regulations. DE RIJKE are still operating their vehicles from the Grimsby area working for Huntsman from the Greatham and Calais factories.

Regards T.B.O.G.

P.S. gonna post a couple of the tanker pics here> viewtopic.php?f=35&t=35749&hilit=scrapbook&start=12870

Brown was one few in Grimsby to Not pay by the hour , unless it was weekend work when they paid a special low rate such as £8.00 per hour sundays , but deducted this from the vehicle earnings to reduce the drivers bonus that was suppose to pay ALL the overtime up to 12.5 hours daily , over 12,5 they paid a low rate and a driver could have a hell of a job to even get this out of them , a couple of times when they did pay hourly they would only pay hours they thought the job should take ! not what it did often take , they would employ country boys who only wanted a big Scania and not proper wages , a driver could run bent ,work most sundays , up to 5 x 15 hour days and take home not much more than a shunter , it was totally random and not possible for the driver to be able to work out his earnings , for a long time they told drivers to run their time out ect and they would consider paying the extra if the truck had made big money , dream on if you think they did good , well known for overloading long after all the others had gone legal

That rings several very loud bells! :unamused:
Still got the T-shirt.
