Brown was one few in Grimsby to Not pay by the hour , unless it was weekend work when they paid a special low rate such as £8.00 per hour sundays , but deducted this from the vehicle earnings to reduce the drivers bonus that was suppose to pay ALL the overtime up to 12.5 hours daily , over 12,5 they paid a low rate and a driver could have a hell of a job to even get this out of them , a couple of times when they did pay hourly they would only pay hours they thought the job should take ! not what it did often take , they would employ country boys who only wanted a big Scania and not proper wages , a driver could run bent ,work most sundays , up to 5 x 15 hour days and take home not much more than a shunter , it was totally random and not possible for the driver to be able to work out his earnings , for a long time they told drivers to run their time out ect and they would consider paying the extra if the truck had made big money , dream on if you think they did good , well known for overloading long after all the others had gone legal
How far back are you talking Lilladan? I started with them working in the warehouse aged 16 and did 25 years with them, my ol man did 42.5 years and they had several more drivers with well over 25 years service each. saw drivers leave and then come back again because the grass wasn’t greener. So if they did rob the drivers, they must of still been well paid.
As for running over weight that must be way back, back when i was loading they had an axle weigher installed in the yard and we had to weigh every vehicle that was loaded.
I know the tippers were run overloaded during the miners strike, they were told it doesn’t matter how heavy you are, just get as much as you can in to the power stations!!
Hi T B O G , Browns always had a really good name as far as i can remember . Someone who worked for them told me they had quite a few "country drivers " but so did every body else Grimsby isnt such a big place !! Still seems strange not to see tioxide chimney smoking regards Geoff

I among many other used to use Tioxide chimney as a weather vane, you could guarantee it telling you which way the wind was blowing and where to get out of the wind to sheet down among other things.
It is very true about our “country drivers” we had quite a few (just listed almost 20 off the top of my head) we used to call them Yukka’s because they lived in the sticks, just like the Yukka plant. Even the ones from Louth got the lable even though it’s a town.

When I was a trailer mate at Bradys in the late '60’s the drivers from the country areas were called “hay shakers” or to give them their full title “Alabami Hay shakers” there was also a few ex forestry workers and one in particular was called “Joe the Woodman” RIP,a right maniac, which is probably the reason why he was given the first new Ergo cab to enter service with T.Brady & Sons Ltd,it was a Leyland Badger on a “C” reg IIRC,and there was still one or two new LAD cabbed units appearing at the same time.Cheers Bewick.
So Berwick , did Bradys pay well ?, i read Bob Brady was at 21 Suddenly given a Leyland Comet four-in-line , Tom saying be in at 4am monday for London ``you can do a couple of years down the road he said he made it to Markyate cafe A5 monday night ,one hard day and not a pot washed , all still to do

Biggest pay packet I ever had at Bradys,as a trailer mate in 1967, 19/20 y/old was £33 top line,£22 net. plus probably a couple of £ left over from the exces as well but that didn’t count in those far off days !Don’t know where you got the story about Bob Brady (Jr,I suppose your on about) and Tommy Brady was his grandad and was long gone RIP before the Young’un was 21 ! he was working over at their Felixstowe depot when I was there and I don’t believe he ever drove a Comet and 4 in-line ever, well at least not out of Barrow,Leyland 680 would be the lad to give you more gen on all things Brady I think.Cheers Bewick.
I must say it sounded like a Bob Tuck special , i don`t believe the stuff he writes about Munro taking three days to get from Aberdeen to south mimms ! , i had a few beers one monday night wid a Sutherlands of Peterhead guy in London he had done almost a weeks miles already !
No that’s ok these pictures were taken outside my parents house. My Dad had picked up that crane from Watford and was en route to
Middlesbrough when he came home on a “fiddle” The Atki was powered by a 180 ■■■■■■■ it was quite a good motor he was working for Midlands Storage at the time
You wouldn’t get away with loading it like that nowadays

hiya,
We never got away with loading like that even in those days I moved many
such loads and the crane jib was always transported on a flat trailer that
way was better for the guvnor he got two loads out of it and you got a pal
from your own firm to run with.
thanks harry, long retired.
