There begs another question,I wonder which operators took delivery of the other 17 tractor units of a “similar” spec to the NCB one,I dont recall any up our way,I wonder if Tom Riding knew of any on his travels? Cheers Bewick.

my list is all chassis numbers. but they can be checked from there number plates. i have three number plates. HLH 540N Evans transport devon, this looks to have the shed axle, mlr623n willment plant, ■■■■■■ axle, then i have numbers for suu140n suu143N and mhx 896P, but do not no who run them. first borderer made with the 280RR was 31.5.73 and that was the only one that year, then 9 borderers in 74 and three in 75. the other 5 says “dates not none” on my sheet. first chassis number 25514 last one 29278.

It has the extra wide radiator grille to help cool the big Rolls-Royce Eagle 280-290 engine.

Saviem:
But what I do know, is that the quality fell away from Atkinson, be it from erratic component supply, lack of labour force confidence, or just plain b… awful management…but the quality went.
Bon Nuit, Cheerio for now.

Bon soir Monsieur Saviem. When would you say that Atkinson started to lose the plot on build quality? Would it have coincided, roughly, with the launch of the Mk2? I think I have read, somewhere, that the Viewline used to suffer from windscreen problems- cracking or falling out, something like that. There is a Viewline in preservation with a box-section frame fitted inside the cab, presumably to prevent those things happening although, given its age, the ash frame has possibly rotted away and the additional fabrication would be a cheaper remedy than rebuilding the cab.

Plus one I took myself at Huddersfield in 2010.

This may seem like a silly question but that row of 11 toggle switches, how did you know what each one did if they’re not labeled?

The steering wheel is covering the labels, you can just see the top of the right-hand set.

Great video John, certainly brings back memories for me, but I’d be happy to jump in the drivers seat of that!! Regards, Mizzo.

if you are ever at a rally you can have a drive.

What an offer, thanks, I go to a few rallies but I have not seen your Atki yet, p.s, I am not a spotty youth!! Regards, Mizzo.

ahhh yeah I see Mizzo - cheers.

So, next question… what do all those toggle switches do then? Left to right…

LeeJ:

From right to left.
1-Side lights.
2-headlights. (main beam control switch on column stalk)
The rest i would have to see the info plate for which order but it depended on what was fitted and the switch was
doing what it was supposed to :smiling_imp: :unamused: :open_mouth:
The side column had the horn push, indicator switch + warning lamp and main beam control.

The Late Gordon Oliver, an Atkinson driver with Joseph Hoyles at Darley Dale, used to say that you could allways tell the Atky driver’s in a cafe as their plate was three inches to the left of them! A legacy of the offset steering wheel.

Pete.

And the wear on the outside of your overalls caused by the rubbing of the gearlever.

I can vouch for that Richard.

There are actually twelve switch positions - even though the panel in the picture has eleven.

From left to right, the twelve are:

Reversing light switch
Heater/blower switch
Panel light switch
Interior light switch
Loading lamp switch
Screen washer switch
Engine start switch (to the right of the engine start button)
Fog light switch
Spot light switch
Headlamp switch
Side & tail light switch
Headlamp flasher switch

mines a little different. the first switch has the decal for the name board lamp, which it dose, then blower, the dash light for the clocks, the cab light, then 5th wheel lamp, wiper wash, starter motor power, not fuel shut off with it been cable stop. fog lamp, spot lamp, headlamps, side lights. the orange lamp is for heater for the engine.

The lone 45T 4x2 would it have had the deep cross members like the 6 x 4 Venturer ?

the standard borderer 10 8" on the chassis mine has the 45 venturer 11. the 75 had 12.1. the chassis cross members, was 13" from bolt the bolt one the bracing triangle shape down the chassis side both side of the spring hanger, then another a little behind the box with a cut out for the prop. not sure if this is different or not?

The cross member behind the gearbox was like that on them all cut away for the prop.
