MK1 & MK11 Atkinsons,a class on their own

cattle wagon man:
Last week I was in Walton - le - Dale , so I stopped to take this photograph.
It appears that since the Atkinson factory was demolished , the Winery Lane name remains as a memory.
However,…the residents look a weird bunch .

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

“The residents” of to-day probably don’t know that Winery Lane was the site of the Atkinson factory and it produced some of the finest heavy commercials ever seen in the UK.Although I have visited the factory on a number of occaisions in the 70’s it was to the Service centre in Club Street up in Bamber Bridge that I mainly had cause to visit, the two chaps I usually dealt with at Club St. were Mike Fairbrother and Joe ********,I just can’t recall Joe’s second name for the moment but he was the Workshop manager.Great days running great motors !!Cheers Bewick.

Speaking of Club St. I went there to buy this Super machine in late '74 IIRC,it wasn’t 12 months old and been on demo with some “pansey” :unamused: outfit from the N.East, their poncy drivers couldn’t turn the steering wheel because it wasn’t "power assisted"So,I was told, the Shop Steward “Blacked it” So I snapped it up! We re-painted it into Bewick fleet colours (McGuffie was a subsiduary) as it was painted a “■■■■■■■ dark blue colour when I bought it :sunglasses:  We put it straight to work on double shift, nights to Daventry and back and then either to W.■■■■■■■ or Lancs on days,I can never recall it ever missing a beat or letting us down it was one of the best Atkys we ever ran, pity about not having P/steering but then we’d never have got it as the N.East “nancy boys” would have kept it eh!! :sunglasses:  PS I’m nearly ■■■■■■■ myself, but I couldn’t resist, good job I don’t live over that side of the Country eh!! “gurrgle gurrgle” ah! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis what the hell is PAS, In my earley days in the haulage game it was porridge,Wheatabix,7 some good old fryups from the likes of Motormans, Annies Cafe at Diggle, & Pure determination to get the job done & earn a few bob, Happy long gone days, Regards Larry.

I ken what your saying Larry, but you are one of the Old School that was fetched up hard with no nonsense, what you have to realise is later generations are a lot softer and they require “featherbedding” and this obviously started in the mid 70’s when they “knocked” the Atky back 'cause it had nee PAS !!! Soft buggers ! Cheers Dennis.

This is what I like about this Old Time Lorry thread everyone has an opinion.Normal service seems to have been resumed dont you think Dennis   great stuff love it.

Yes Dennis or should that be Denise   as you gave it a girls name must have had a

It sure seems to have resumed John but no doubt some “■■■■■■■■” will pop up again and start bad mouthing the great old marque, but we’ll be ready with a witty reply eh! Cheers Dennis.PS Oh! ■■■■ I spoke too soon!!! :unamused:

This is a shot of probably the finest Atky we ever ran shot here in the depot just after it’s re-furb and repaint into the new fleet design in around 1977 IIRC.This motor gave many years of reliable service and finished its revenue days running 5 or 6 loads of pulp a day from Store in Carnforth to the Mill at Beetham,it probably earned us more profit in it’s last years of operation than it had done all it’s life,Luvverly Jubberly ! Cheers Dennis.PS this tractor unit was fitted with Air-O-Matic Power steering wor Brian !!!

Late MK2 with ZF power steering 250 ■■■■■■■ 13 speed puller, Eton 2 speed back axle, fantastic to drive.

That’s a nice spec did it come from Atkinson or was it a bit`sa spec motor ?

Yes, it did come from Atkinsons to a Northern Ireland haulier, but it had a Kirkstall back axle. This wagon was run by C. D. Bolton of Longridge who bought it from Syd Hartley. The axle was fitted by me at N.L. Wallings. This wagon was sprayed yellow and was known as the Yellow Peril

Cheers Dennis.

Got to keep this great thread on track so I’ll put a few shots on of some of the Atkys that passed through the Bewick fleet in the '70’s ! Starting with the baby of the fleet,a 16ton GVW 4 wheeler 6LW,DB 6:600,Eaton single speed axle,24 ft Ali flat.Origionally ex Suttons and very lightly worked by its overall condition when I bought it.It ran like a “sewing machine” and was a pleasure to drive,it’s shot here stood at our Haverflatts Garage in Milnthorpe village circa '74,and is loaded with 10tons of Limestone water worn rockery from Orton Scar between Tebay and Appleby. We hauled many hundreds of tons of this stone for ■■■■■■■ Stone Ltd. The stone went mainly to Garden centers in the South east where some of the larger ones took it in 20ton artic loads.

This is a shot of the other baby of the fleet,an ex Pickfords Tanks motor which apparently had only ran between BP Partington and Manchester airport with Aviation fuel.Again this was a fine example of a lightly worked motor,150LX,DB6:600,Kirkstall BDR axle.It ran as smooth as silk and could manage 10MPG regularly hauling 20ton loads both ways and I always liked to drive this motor when I got the opertunity !

Last but by no means least, the last of the three MK1’s we ran which came into our fleet via our aquisition of McGuffie Transport in 1974,it had origionally been new to Oswalds of Ayr so it had not led the same “sheltered life” the other two MK1’s had led ! But it was,nevertheless,100% reliable and gave us good service ending it’s days as a local shunter in Milnthorpe.Obviously it wasn’t as smooth as the Gardners as it had the ■■■■■■■ 180 engine,ZF 6speed box and Kirkstall axle, neither was it as economical but it could pull a house down !!

Continuing the theme this is a shot of one of a number of K reg Borderers we ran, this particular one joined the fleet when it was about 3 years old, supplied new to Barnet and Graham by Scotts of Penrith in 1971 it had the ■■■■■■■ 205 engine, ZF Power steering, Fuller 610 box and Kirkstall BDR axle.We put it into the McGuffie Transport fleet and it operated, mainly, between the Liverpool area,Milnthorpe and West ■■■■■■■■■■ was a decent motor from memory and a welcome addition to the fleet when,at that time, new motors were hard to source when you needed them for the increases in traffic we were generating, and the price was right as well!!  Cheers Bewick.

not looked at all the Atkinson or Bewick threads yet Dennis, but did you run any 3-axle Atki units? if so,how did they compare to the 2-axle Borderers?
