MK1 & MK11 Atkinsons,a class on their own

eh ?

Nice shots of quality motors there Ade,I wonder if the SCK was an ex Pandora motor from Fleetwood ? Just a guess.Cheers Dennis.

I’m fairly sure, Dennis, that that isn’t an original period registration, but a a modern age-related plate of some description.

Hi Dennis, I just came across them when I picked up some caravans for export, took them in black and white as it was 0600 and seemed a good idea at the time. Here’s one from before in colour
Does this count

Cheers Ade

Love how the lettering runs across the side of the cab

As seen in a field, there might have been a Mk1 or Mk2 in the same field but it doesnt seem to matter anymore… I love sarcasm

Is that trailer your home “Sepo” ? Bewick.

O.K. the MK1 came out in 1958 so it was fairly modern back then and some ended up with such as 220 ■■■■■■■■ motor by the late 1960s ,not bad, 180 ■■■■■■■■ not too bad , Gardner 150 why ?, but the MK 11 what was the point ? out of date before it was out on the market ! very bad for the driver , they used to say it will do sixty five all day long` yes empty or down hill it would , but i would like to be having a few pound for each time a Borderer came storming and shaking past my F86 as we came on a rise , then down the box a few gears on the Atki as i just dropped one gear with the 6.7 litre Volvo and left them behind , and after a full day i had no effect of all the miles , Atkinson should have closed by 1969 then no MK11 .

Apart from you having what appears to be a pathological hatred of all things Atky, you also would seem to be in possession of an extremely fertile immagination as regards to the capabilities of the F86!I’ve never heard such aload of Bollox for a long while, and I can tell you that no F86 could outperform the 205/220 ■■■■■■■ Atkys we ran,in fact,we had one Borderer that could “■■■■ all over” the 240 F88’s.I would agree with you about the F86 having the “edge” on the 150LX Gardners and maybe the 180 ■■■■■■■ and Gardners but the F86 was never a match for the 205/220 ■■■■■■■ or the 240 Gardner.Plus the F86 was well over rated as a 32tonner which was the market it was sold into in the UK,I well remember trialing a demo F86 and there was no way after that I would have chosen to introduce them into our Atky/ERF/Guy and Seddon fleet. In the event I bought two F88’s for a kick off !!I would suggest that you flew past an Atky that was “parked up” on a layby and you convinced yourself that it was moving!! I’m sorry but your on the wrong thread if you are attempting to discredit the fine reputation that the Atkinson marque carved out for its self in the affections of many operators throughout the UK.Cheers Bewick.

Nice reply Dennis could not have put it better myself

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, the Mk2 was behind the times, but so were all the other British motors of its day. The successful GB lorries of the period were a triumph of development over design, and it seems that Atkinson did it better than the others.

PS.If you find anyone agreeing with you over-enthusiastically, when you question the merits of old British wagons, it is probably the idiot. Just ignore him.

The funny thing is the F86 was better on hills than any F88 eight speed and you needed a good sixteen speed F88 to keep up with an 86 , in my later TD70E(the fifth power /torque uprating) engined F86 i would p all over the lower power 88 , 240 Gardners and could liveeasy with Scania 111 s up to the F86 s top speed of 62.5 MPH with the single reduction axle. the standard five speed 111 would do 55 flat out , many many times i would be on a motorway doing 55 in the 86 when along side comes this 65 mph wonder of engineering called the Borderer , so i drop my window and listen to the blip of the gas and the downshifting and see the poor driver being shaken up and down and see his hand reach for the left indicator as he dropped behind and bye bye , later in some miles he charges past on the flat or down hill as he puts up with all the niose and vibration , if he has such as Crane Fruehauf trailer with twenty tons on he is 32 tons gross weights , if i had twenty tons on a York 40with an F86 i am 30 tons total , so if you want to compare at 32 tons please remember the 86 has more payload so all the road tests were unbalanced and even though with two tons more load the F86 was using far less fuel than any Atkinson , the same trailer with the same load should have been used for all tests of 32 tonners , as in the real world a standard load was often 20 tons , when we had seven Seddon Atkinson 400 they could only load thier own 20 ton with 32 foot 6 ins long York trailers if the customer weighs , I do very much understand that many drivers of sloggerscould not get the best from the small Volvo motor, the240Gardner was really 255 bhp but pulled like 180 ! Volvo did not make any 240 , ratings quoted for TD100 A were 230 (bs au 141) or 270 (sae) other ratings later engines were 235 and 290 TD100 B so cheers as well PS nice pics of the classicsilver knights `called Mk1 , even though the steering wheel was not even lined up with the driver and the handbrake was in the way of access to the cabin and the 150 Gardner pulled like 90 tired horses ,nice to look at !

Are you related to Hans Christian Andersen by any chance “Lilladan” ? You sure are able to tell excellent fairey stories !! Cheers Bewick

Hi Folks ,We ran an F86 biggest load of crap we ever ran up,to 14 tons not to bad ,above that would not pull u out of bed ,Headgaskets by the score ,A few injector pipes and 2 gear boxes ,rear axle ok ,best thing that ever happend we managed to part ex it ,the driver who drove it thaught it was great ,But he is in a mental hospital ,but comes out now and again ,Cheers Barry

I had at the time[and still do] have a great affection for the old atki,s.They may well have been short of creature comforts but I drove them for a few com,s in the 70s and early 80s with gardners 150s,180s, and ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ could really move especially the ■■■■■■■ and were reliable.I earned my wages driving the old girls for many yrs with very little trouble. In their day they were a good truck and should not be slagged off by anyone.
regards dave.

He’s possibly a Troll so it’s maybe best we all ignore him Lads ! Cheers Dennis.

If he is, he had me fooled, although that is not difficult.

i drove both , a j reg mk2 /205 ■■■■■■■ / 6 speed ZF and an n reg F86 , i’ve an affection for both, but the Atki had no heater (till i eventually got it fixed) and the F86 you could’nt turn it off. They both did 52 mph flat out ,one had a jennings sleeper and the other an F88 bed on the back windows. The Volvo was way more comfortable than the Atki, though i musdt admit.
The atki outlasted the F86 by the fact my drivers seat went through the floor of the volvo as it rusted through, then it decided to eject all of the coolant going up Lincoln hill , u bolt on the back axle sheared, range change cable broke, etc, etc. All i ever had to do with the Atkinson was keep warm and make sure i had the weird shape spanner with me and a supply of gearbox bolts ready for when the n/side rear gearbox bolt broke.

Both got replaced by wait for it

FIAT 170F26’s

now wasn’t that clever

Last week I was in Walton - le - Dale , so I stopped to take this photograph.
It appears that since the Atkinson factory was demolished , the Winery Lane name remains as a memory.
However,…the residents look a weird bunch .

Cheers, cattle wagon man.
