carryfast-yeti:
not looked at all the Atkinson or Bewick threads yet Dennis, but did you run any 3-axle Atki units? if so,how did they compare to the 2-axle Borderers?

Sorry “CFY” we never ran any 6x2 Atky (Sed/Atks) only ever ran 6x2 Scanias and a sole FL10 6x2.Cheers Dennis.

It’s hard to recall now all the tonnage that came out of Barrow and to a lesser extent Millom, Kendal and Milnthorpe, the main of it delivered within the UK.It just goes to show how much of a decline there has been in British Industry.I well remember the early evenings when we were still at work in the Mill at Beetham in the 1970’s and Brady’s trunkers( Atky 8LXB’s) would come sailing past,I always noticed one in particular,he always had his cap pulled well down on his head! Some bugger called Sleddon I think it was :unamused: ,Happy days all the same,Cheers Dennis.

You could be right there Frank, the last motor Bull had at Bewick Transport was an FL10 6x2 and it was fitted up with a set of optics in the bunk area, apparently he didn’t mind giving another a driver a drink as long as they were prepared to pay Club prices (he had a CIU Affiliated sticker on the rear window)!!Roy sure was a character,he worked for us for a good few years up until he retired,it wasn’t long afterward that he was diagnosed with the Big C,but they kept him going for longer because Christies gave him a larger dose of Kymo than he should have had,I remember sitting with him in his back kitchen not long before he passed away and the poor bugger was in agony because of the overdose of kymo. But he still insisted I had a “large” dram with him !! They don’t make them like Bull anymore, good driver could go anywhere load anything, but he had to be managed otherwise he’d take the ■■■■ !! But that was Bull !! Cheers Dennis.

It wasn’t Albert,he wore glasses!! It was you defo Frank unless Albert was on days and you wore his cap on nights.    Cheers Dennis.

This is a '73/early '74 shot at Corley, southbound, one Sunday,it is the only shot I have of a John McGuffie motor prior to the date in late '74 when we bought his business.IIRC his driver was on his way to Dagenham, unit only,to tip a load of drums that had been dropped there from Liverpool. We were changing over two trailers from Gravesend with two from Milnthorpe.Cheers Dennis.

All the way to Dagenham bobtail? And you reckon BRS were inefficient? :unamused:  :unamused:

I didn’t want to critisize or comment in my post, but along with our other three drivers I recall being staggered what McGuffies driver told us at Corley, apparently this load of drums had been dropped at Dagenham(from Aintree) on the Friday and the driver had tramped all the home to Flookburgh solo!! Not to put too fine a point on it this was one of the reasons we were able to buy McGuffie out when we did not long afterward ! I’m saying no more.  Cheers Bewick.

An early '73 shot I took one Sunday lunchtime in Milnthorpe,me and another driver had just returned from the York Trailer plant in Northhallerton with 2 X 40footers for Bewick Transport(fleet numbers 13 & 14) and a 36footer which we supplied to our local Paper Mill at Beetham, this was their fleet no.7 and was to be the last trailer they ever bought,we bought their fleet from them at the end of '76 ready for a clean start for their financial year 1977.Bewick.

Bit different shot here probably circa 73/74 of a new Atky chassis in the yard down in Milnthorpe village,my brother Richard is at the wheel…But I’m certain it was one of a number I came by from various parts of the country, via a dealer Pal,why do I know this? Well all the ones we got from Walton-le-Dale which we ordered had twin 62 gal fuel tanks ! Cheers Bewick.

Nice mid '70’s shot of 4 Borderers in the yard down in Milnthorpe, sorry about the ERF stuck in the middle, but they were nearly as good as Atkys I suppose !Cheers Bewick.
