Minimum speed on motorways

hi i came across 2 trucks this morning from the same company at 4am traveling at 35mph on the m4,i was being overtaken so had to drop back which is why i know there speed, how stupid is this sort of driving just to drag your hours out if your hourly paid, its no wonder so many hgv drivers are killed runing into the back of other hgv,s if you get morons like this on the motorways, when i got up the side of him he had both elbows on the wheel holding his chin!!!

It used to be 40 mph, I remember a driver of a milk float getting a ticket for only doing 35 mph.
Across the pond here most highways show max and min limits.

It used to be that if your vehicle was not capable of maintaining 50MPH you couldn’t go on. At Goole was one of the last remaining signs with a list of vehicles that couldn’t use a motorway.

There was / is one on the A5 where it meets the M54 too. Also, I’m sure the highway code referenced 25 mph as the minimum the vehicle needed to be capable of although not quoted any more.

No minimum speed limit but you can get nicked for going too slow.

Is there not some law about a vehicle must be capable of at least 25/30 mph to use a motorway, or am I imagining it?

Thats absolutely diabolical behaviour. If they’ve to spin their hours out why don’t they park up somewhere and stick it on POA ? Tossers, and they wonder about road rage :imp: :imp:

Ever heard of forward planning? Maybe if you’re struggling to cope with a 20 mph speed differential at 4am you want to think about doing something else? Just a thought… too much Strongbow Peter?

I heard about this the other day. They say it helps traffic flow, is that your experience? Is it an experiment Pat?

I came across two lorries doing 40 the other day on the M25, traffic was free flowing once I’d passed them, was like a rolling roadblock. I signaled my displeasure with a tootle of the audible warning device

From the Highway Code:

Motorways MUST NOT be used by pedestrians or holders of provisional motorcycle or car licences. Motorcycles under 50 cc, cyclists, horse riders, certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission) also MUST NOT use motorways. Agricultural vehicles and powered wheelchairs/powered mobility scooters (see Rules 36-46 incl) are also banned from motorways.

Not saying it is acceptable to drive at alow speed on the motorway, but not sure a minimum speed limit would help matters, what if you had a flat tyre, or a mechanical defect, surly its safter to leve the motoway at the next exit at low wpeed then to stop, also in traffic jams etc you would get people teffified that they are braking the law by not driving fast enough :stuck_out_tongue: Then theres hevey loads etc that can slo to around 35mph going up hills
Also while people drivng two slowly on the motorways is annoying i dont see it as dangerous, if you cant slow down for another vehicle then you really shouldnt be driving

This used to be printed on entry to the motorway along with a (think) blue sign saying minimum speed 30mph. Remember it well from when I was a lad.

It didn’t mean a minimum speed though - you just had to be capable of that speed.

‘‘its no wonder so many hgv drivers are killed runing into the back of other hgv,s’’

I know especially with drivers like you getting boxed in at 4am

It is possible that one of the lorries’ engines was in “limp home” mode and the second was with him to make sure he got home.
As has been said already, forward planning would have prevented the “incident” and a bit of thought before condemning
the drivers wouldn’t have hurt either.

Any driver who runs into the back of another vehicle has only himself to blame.

There are far too many drivers who think they have some kind of right to maintain
maximum speed and expect the rest of us to get out of their way.
There are still some that drive but plenty who merely operate the vehicle.

Regards,
Nick.

No can do! Isotrack means the only way of stringing it out is to drive very slowly.

Don’t see the problem at 4am.

That’s not a real sign is it? I thought metric road signs are illegal.

I thought motorways had lanes for you to overtake■■?
I have met plenty of cranes during the day doing less than 35mph and have passed them without killing myself and 400 other people.

4am hardly day, and cranes have big orange flashing lights to let you know there going slow

I am assuming you are the type that will do 56mph in thick fog?
