Mckellar From Purfleet Scania 143 info

If my memory doesn’t fail me Billy Kelly used to drive M516 when I worked for mckellars. He certainly didn’t spare the thing… I tried to keep up with him and it coming back from Alicante…gave up at Bordeaux…

I remember Jerry, lad with glasses. He was the brother in law of the late Ronnie Evans R.I.P.

cant remember the name but were all mainly gd bunch lads up and down spain great times

Ime new to this so hear goes
ime after some info on a ex Mckellar scania 143 450 4x2 streamline topline reg M516 YHJ ive owned it since 2005 and was wanting some history about it or pics of it. Think its been on tanker work round purfleet areas after mckellar’s got rid of it, found various pics and threads of mckellars but nothing about this truck, hope someone out there can help me out with this.
Cheers!!!

I worked for Mckellars when we got this truck new it used to look the same as the steamline on “crack on to macon” pictures .There was 6 143"s.M512YHJ (stolen),M516YHJ,N128BHK,N129BHK,N151BHK and N178BHK (never painted and came with the dark grey chassis scania use now.Your truck was used on doubled up express work to spain. The two welsh drivers Paul and mick had it for about two years until they got a 4 series. It then went on normal work with one driver still doing spain.I left and started working for scania purfleet so still worked on it until the contract run out. After a some years i think the side skirts where taken off because the diesel spilt on them over the years made them expand and look a mess.It was then traded in to us at scania for 10 144"s along with the rest of the 143"s.We put a mid lit axle on it and it was sold to a owner driver called “Bob Whippy” doing tanker work. Then it was sold to a firm called “R and J” just outside Tilbury dock.I do not no what happened to it after that. When Paul and Mick had it they did used to give it a bit of a hidding but it never went wrong ,they said if you thrash it from day one it knows what its got to get used to and in there defence it did pull well .Sorry i have not got any pictures of it but i do still see McKellars son from time to time and i will ask him as he used to go out in it now and then. Its nice to hear that it is still around as i have only ever seen N151BHK since they were sold

Thanks for that its still running well and a good puller as u said, we use it on tipper work all the time and it ■■■■■■ all over our chipped 124 470, thinking its done at least 1.6m kms now just tret it to some ends and mains and new oil pump yesterday so should be fit for plenty more.
carnt bring it down your way now cause of lez used to go to erith edible oils with it some times,
will post u some pics of it looks bit different now from wen u last saw it, i bought it off a exporter in luton in sept 05
do u still work for scania at purfleet?

Nice to see the old girl has been looked after, i had N128 BHK doing spain and and i still say pound for pound those
143- 450’s were the best engine ever put in a truck “OH HAPPY DAY’S”

Hi lads i hope this is any help to anyone.Paul

McKellars, is that the mob that had a yard somewhere near the Circus Tavern? I think I loaded groupage in there once or twice…

Hello, thats a real nice 143 mate…I found this piece about McKellars so though I’d put it on seeing this thread is on page 1.

Hope this is of interest.

Cheers Bubbs.

Your right it does look a lot different to when i last saw it .It looks a lot better now than when we had it new.Looks like you have put a lot of time and money into the old girl, well worth it though.I still work at scania purfleet on the breakdown van but as you say we dont get that many older trucks round here any more because of the lez.Nice picture of Ian,Danny and Colin and artical on the swap body trucks. The 142 in the background was cut down into a tractor unit.

n151 bhk my dad bought from scantrucks purfleet back in 1999 good motor it was.

Mr nicehair hears another truck u might know some history on (and not recognise!) it come from scania purfleet earlier this year, some ownerdriver j taylor maybe owned it? possibly on timber haulage? was metalic maroon before scania painted it white.
my good lady drives it for her family firm now, seems to have been well looked after in the past.

I remember that truck,it didnt have a spoiler kit on it when it came in.It was in nice conditon for its age but why they painted it red and white i dont know.It looks ten times better now.We have had loads of nice used trucks come in this year even though we have not been selling many new trucks. There is a very nice R500 Topline in factory metalic blue its worth a look if you know anyone who is after a very tidy motor.I told McKellars son Ian to have a look at your 143 he said he might have some pictures of it.Have you had much trouble with your 470 s.I tend to go out to them with fuel pressure problems.I know i would say it because i work for Scania but make sure you use Scania fuel filters as most of the 470s and 420s i go out to the filter is blocked and sucked in because there is no cage in the middle on the patten part filters.
