Maritime Transport

Does anyone know the current pay rates and what vehicle’s they have on tramping?

Thanks in advance

From what I’ve been told, you don’t get tramping straight away. You wait to be assigned a vehicle, until then you’re cab hopping. Heard this from a Wincanton driver who did a week there so it could just be him putting a negative spin on things.

I think the idea is when you start the lorry you get is whoever is on holiday that week for a few months, so you cab hop each week.

A bit like stobarts then, 1st few months cab hop until your allocated your own.
thanks guys.

Its seems the cab hopping is one of the biggest gripes as to why people leave quite quickly .Once you are past the cab hopping I hear the job ain’t to bad and you can earn well but the hourly rate isn’t good

If your thinking of the Leeds yard I wouldn’t bother myself.
From what I see it’s over political, also jumped up little gets in the office, nice trucks but it’s not yours.

Been a while since I was there, but sounds about right to me.

I think that sums them up to a tee. Not forgetting they’ll work you until you drop.

Nobody in the container game around Yorkshire has a good word for them, only a few blinkered drivers who work there, they think they are so perfect too.

All I know are rumours and Chinese whispers from the Maritime drivers I bump into. They’re meant to be on £600 per week, but they say if you come in on a day-off, you can really push your earnings up. The management are also meant to be quite controlling of you too, constantly calling you for updates, and planning you for maximum driving, minimum rest. They’re renowned for working you hard. But, they’re one of the few firms that stick by their guns and still don’t use agencies to fill their gaps.

I was talking to a driver about their MANs, and he said that the day drivers get the MANs, and the trampers get the DAFs. Who gets the Scanias, Volvos and Mercedes, I don’t know. I see a lot of Maritime vehicles, and I haven’t seen one with a driver’s personal touches in it. Every one I see is completely bare, no photos of family, mascots, bedding, anything. It must be their policy to remove everything at the end of every shift.

I don’t know how true this is, but an ex-driver for Maritime was saying that if you had a specific preference for a truck, such as a manual DAF, let’s say, then they’d look around their depots and try and get you one.

Thanks for the feedback,
I’ve heard different stories about them mainly bad, does seem like a good company to work for tho.

Go and suss it out for yourself. Huge company, different depots with different office staff that come & go over the years, some faces will fit and some won’t. Someones opinion on here based on their/their mates experience in x depot x number of years ago working under the management present at the time could mean jack all. Plenty of guys work for them and are quite happy doing so.

Depends what depot you are based at mostly, but as for pay I’m usually taking home roughly 550pw.

I’ve just started Euro van work again. Get slightly more money take home than that, but…

^^ This is the best advice.

Thanks for the advice, i’ll give them a call tomorrow.

Units tend to be what are the local dealers. Immingham have volvo’s and scanias with a few merc’s thrown in (ex roadway container logistics)

Trailers are all about 2/3 yrs old max, with a few rentals and older ones kicking around.

The drivers at Immingham seem to be fairly happy but there are people there with no idea.

Last week I got sent there to service a trailer that was in Newcastle…the said trailer had never been to Immingham… .

I’m looking at the Leeds depot as they are offering tramping. Doncaster is closer but only offering 4 on 4 off.

Go for it maritime transport is brilliant to work for best equipment first class facilities for drivers annual bonus £600 a week holiday pay and stress free on containers I work out of felixstowe as a tramper take home pay averages around £670 a week. I left tanker work to work for them haven’t looked back 35 years a driver they also pay trampers £70 a week if there’s no nights out to go home when work is quiet good luck.
All vehicles are limited to 52 mph you can personalize but not the exterior if your a tramper one vehicle one driver except on holiday they will never use agency so truck is looked after I drive Scania top line 65 plate top spec as they buy outright and sell within three years via there own sales team secondhandtrucks.co.uk hope this helps.
