I wish you lads would stop trying to convince yourselves these bloody things have to be accepted or are somehow inevitable.
They aint, you do not have to accept them, if you do that’s your choice but no one can force you to.
Of course if you think the fight isn’t worth it, or can’t be arsed, or think you can’t win the fight, then do the other thing, accept them.
I’m the second one, I’m sorry to disappoint.
I like the job, hours suit, get on well with everyone there, feet under the table. Can’t be fussed jacking it in and taking a swim in the ■■■■■■ pond of alternative employers just to make a point. I forgot about the cameras being there ages ago, i’m not arsed & I’m alright jack.

No one is suggesting you should leave, but if the staff stand together preferably with union backing (which mans being in the union in the first place) then in your face cameras can be successfully defeated.
By the way i’m alright jack too and i was arsed.

Juddian …, seriously mate you’re ■■■■■■■ against the wind.
In most cases today many drivers will readily accept any form of humiliation, affront to their professionalism, ■■■■ take or downright ■■■■ liberty with open arms, zero resistance and a jar of vaseline in their mitts.
That is what the rest of us with a bit of self pride are up against these days in this ■■■■ ed up job, and the only way to deal with it is to treat the rest with contempt at their servile attitudes, distance yourself from them, and just look after numero uno …safe in the knowledge that we will never let ourselves be treated like ■■■■ on these firm’s shoes as these guys readily seem to ■■■■ up gladly.
Unfortunately reading a lot of posts and opinions on this forum we are in a minority.
Juddian:

As I pointed out earlier, we have more drivers running to the office to grass on the previous driver who covered up the inward facing camera than drivers who would band together to abolish said cameras. Your feeling (which I share) is noble, but sadly amounts to no more than a sentimental breaking of wind after a dinner of trade unionism.

I know i’m ■■■■■■■ in the wind, but someone has to try and tell drivers they do not have to bend over and take all this ■■■■■■■■ with a smile.
Standing together and being prepared to say no if necessary can win the day, and no i don’t mean by taking the ■■■■ out of the job, but by being professionals and doing the job well and making the company very viable puts you in a strong position, because they know (but won’t tell you) that good staff do not grow on the money trees of Croydon, comprende?
More than one way of doing things.
No i can’t stand grasses either, they deserve the direction this industry is going down.
scousedave:
would you ever work for a company like Maritime who are putting in cameras watching the drivers (not outward facing).
Probably would given that I am. Cameras are only in use when the engine is running (not ignition), the forward facing cameras are on when the ignition is on. Footage is only reviewed when there is an incident, you hit something, someone reports you for something etc. As for live streaming to the office, the bandwidth required to do that and time spend to do it would cost far too much and there isn’t even the infrastructure for it to be possible.
It’s after the driver on the M1 crashed while using handsfree and is a deterrent for phone use, I’m not silly enough to use my phone at the wheel and I do my best to drive responsibly so it doesn’t really bother me.
If you can manage to have a crash using a hands free kit, then you deserve to be treated like a child.
Driving and talking at the same time is not a difficult thing to do…
I agree that people shouldn’t be texting or holding their phones whilst driving.

You are a ■■■■■ if you believe that!
So you find driving and talking at the same time difficult?
Seriously?.. Are you in the right job.
Ok, in that case I’m Rob and I’m a ■■■■■.
It’s not right and I wouldn’t accept it. Mainly on principle. If they were fitted while I was an existing employee I would state my objection and intention to cover the camera during my shift. If they couldn’t accept that then they would have to terminate my contract. Then I would look to the legality of their actions. Always some ambulance chasing lawyer interested in these sort of things.
If it was part of a new job then I wouldn’t take it.
It all starts with " only Inthe case of an accident" and then it gets checked for rest periods and breaks etc etc.
So you find driving and talking at the same time difficult?

I think you are well aware of what I am saying. Talking on hands free can have an impact on concentration. Anyone who thinks otherwise are fooling themselves.
It’s a bit like the ones that think they are safe to speed. Oh and I ain’t in the job no more…thank goodness.

many year’s ago I did the rospa advanced driving course in a lorry and commentary was a big part of the test.

No more than talking to a passenger or listening intently to something good on the radio.
I don’t know about you but I would find it humanly impossible to give absolute 100% concentration for 9 solid driving hours …as most people would And no, I aint fooling myself, I’m talking real world stuff, not repeating some rhetoric b/s fed to us by the powers that be in order to reiterate their point.
For eg…how many times have you passed a certain MSA or something and then discover you can not remember going past as you have been on ‘‘autopilot’’ for God knows how long.
If you can concentrate on driving 100%, for 100% of your driving time, you’re a better man/driver than most of us…but you clearly already think that anyway reading most of your posts.
I think partly, it’s a generational thing, these lads are just used to taking it up the ying yang and just get on with it, dissent and sticking two fingers up to ■■■■■■■■ are just an alien concept I’m afraid, mention Unions or sticking together and the usual ■■■■■■■■ about the sixties and seventies is trotted out. It’s a changed world fellas, glad I did my time when I did, and I’ve got the slippers on now!

I have done many commentry drives over the years.Hate to disappoint you but not the same as having a conversation on a phone.

But if that IS true mate,… why is that?
Is it drummed into them at school nowadays, as a conspiracy to keep the working class ‘‘in it’s place’’ due to historical events in past generations…or what?
I have 2 lads one 30 the other 24, and neither of them are like that, and my eldest daughter is well feisty, she’s a lot like me in the way that she has no tolerance to idiots, and speaks her mind if she is being done wrong, …So, is it an individual parental thing depending on upbringing or what?
I do notice it a lot more these days in this job with drivers than it ever was, (or at least since I started the job)
Too many spineless ‘‘yes men’’ competing to be the boss’s best mate, who will put up with any ■■■■ injustice .
On the other hand though, it’s no good being a complete ‘‘I aint doing this I aint doing that’’ arrogant arse either, but ffs , there is a happy medium.

Understand what you are saying and you are quite correct but my point is drivers do not concentrate enough without the distraction of talking on a phone.
Have you never witnessed as a passenger when the driver is talking on a phone how the standard of driving sometimes drops because I have many times and usually when you mention it to the driver afterwards he or she does not realise what has happened simply because they were concentrating more on what they were saying than thinking about driving.
No I would not say I am a better driver than most but I am far better than a lot these days.I know my weaknesses and I know when I make a mistake unlike lots of others and I drive with a professional attitude, again unlike a lot these days.

Bang on, once again! I hate to use a catchphrase, but Cultural Marxism is indeed a big thing in education. Consider The Frankfurt School and its effect on modern (70s -on) classrooms…
Not sure Rob, it just seems like people are frightened to speak out or even negotiate some of this crap away, and don’t even feel as if they have the right too, very odd. I agree when you say it’s about the happy medium though, fair days pay for fair days work and all that, but the opportunity for workers to operate with autonomy and independence and participate in what happens to them is very much reduced to how it once was, I blame the mobile phone!
Our gang are all in their thirties (one lad two girls) seem to get by without much crap, they aren’t in transport, so maybe that’s the reason
