Mack trucks in the UK

joedwyer1:
Why do you sometimes see renault magnums with mack on the front?

Renault owned Mack for some time then sold them on to Volvo.
Mack trucks are total crap and that comes from someone who has driven lots of them.

Sort of …

This conclusion is based on the facts that Renault s.a.s. is Volvo’s largest shareholder in terms of votes and that Jean-Baptiste Duzan represents Renault s.a.s. in the Election Committee.

Renault S.A is the Volvo groups largest shareholder - About 21% of voting rights i believe

Steve

not massively into them but credit where its due, theres a reason macks are used on heavy haulage and the big road train stuff, and its not for willy waving (the kenworths are for that lark)

Place in Bolton Lancashire used to import them in the 80s used to go there as a kid and sit in the trucks guys there used to give us mack badges tshirts etc long gone now though

I was there in the late 70s early 80s…Yer right :sunglasses:
Got a F786 now, as in my avatar…Needs a bit of work, but should hit the road this year.

A few UK operators used to run Macks to ME in back in the day.
I.H.Brown is a name that rings a bell IIRC.

hi att,
I’m really pleased to read that you’ve got an f series and are renovatng it, and very much hope you’ll be able to show it before too long so I can have a chance to see it, Iv’e had a couple of projects myself over the years but sadly neither of them a mack, yet !, but that was because i just couldn’t find one, i understand the work and expense that you’re involved with, a photo on here would be great if you can?,
speaking from experience, don’t let it wear you down by trying to over do it wanting to finish it all yesterday, and keep a tight reign on the spending, it’s so easy to get carried away.
Good for you i hope you have a great time with it.

Hi Davnic,
I’m pretty sure i remember the i.h brown mack’s being in one of the transport mags in the late 70’s, like you say there were a few firms running them at about this time, that would have been a great era to have been working as a driver, british industry exporting plenty and new work like the middle east etc comming on for the transport firms, and the trucks themselves transforming from the likes of aec, foden etc with the gardners and the airfix cabs to the european stuff and of course a few mack’s, sadly all this was few years before my time iv’e missed out on some very interesting and exciting times.

Hiya guys,

First of all thanks for going to the trouble of putting these great photos on here it’s great to see them, I noticed big sam mentioning one having air steering ■■?, I know that there were a lot with air start especially dust carts and fire engines etc but this is the first iv’e heard of mack’s from this period having air steering, i’m about as low tech a bloke as you’re likley to find but one good thing about this internet is it gives us the ability to bring together a lot of people all with different bits of information, even though iv’e been looking into mack’s for as long a i can remember there’s allways more to learn, earlier on someone mentioned an article in the truck and driver mag about mack’s here in UK, i got a copy and saw the picture of the custom built tractor bought by Chris miller heavy haulage in 78 i think, they used it to carry transformers to the dinorwic power station not far from where i’m from, i remember as a teenager going on my pushbike to see this truck doing its stuff and pestering the poor driver for all the info about it, i bet he used to say to his mate when he saw me comming around the corner on my bike " o no! not this bloody kid again Quick shut the curtains we’ll pretend to be asleep" LOL.

I re-discovered this old pic of Mike Lawrence’s Mack (UYC 39W?) taken as it exited the M20 at J10 in April 1986 with a locomotive we had bought from Barry scrapyard, South Wales:
