M/E Spec White Road commander

Herewith two pictures of the RC1, same vehicle, before and after re=styling in relation to RC2.

Every week there were hauls for the Electricity Company of Antwerp (EBES) for which a rental
from TIP was operational. Engine in it was a ■■■■■■■ NTC290, vehicle bought in 1977 and the
clutch-pedal was HEAVY to operate or stand on! Mind the ERF’s in the hall

For the genuine collectioneurs herewith some continent-specifications, though in Dutch language …

It is interesting to note that both the CAT-powered example here and the ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ example(s) are provided with 13-speed Fullers (rather than 9-speed Fullers found in many of the UK ones). Was this simply because the Fuller 13 was favoured on the Continent (which we know to be true from other models)? Robert

Ha ha Robert, you have some advantage of understanding Dutch…but I have absolutely no clue why the Fuller 13 was preferred above others…so I leave
that interesting remark to other technicians and specialists.

Cheers A-J. Nice to see those ERFs lurking in the garage there! Robert

Van Steenbergen also had the RC2 in operation, also bought in 1977 but due to an accident this
tractor was scrapped and used for essential parts around 1986. See that lurking ERF NGC again!

The tilt was one of the 20 ex-Bafma’s

Hello Saviem and YVR Brit,
Re the White,s used by the Ryland group, i worked for Ryland Warrington in the Seddon Atkinson sales department for a number of years, Leaderfreight ran out of our yard, [ Boss was John Scholes ] and they were given a White to run, i think from memory that Ryland had something to do with the importers, well when the lhd White turned up…wow, i had to have a go, well what a disapointment, no room behind the wheel, boneshaking ride, but it made a fantastic noise [ Cat i think ], had a massive sleeper and looked fabulous !!! It was used on the Tunnel Refineries trunk to London every day, but i seem to remember it being sold quite quickly due to it,s thirst and things dropping off !!!

Whatever happened to the Ryland group, they became a big group in the Eighties, did they sell out ?

Hi Gandy… I’m over in Canada now since 1980 so my memory can be a bit rusty re Rylands and Fleet Hire… but I certainly remember that LHD Road Commander… it turned up in 79?, light blue with dark blue arrow head on a red chassis… (cab became the template for the new livery), I’d been working mostly on the F88’s and S/A400’s of F/H and had the E290 400 and the F10 being added to the fleet at Hendon… so, the last thing I needed was this “thing”… Mike our delivery driver took it for a spin and his fillings nearly fell out. Yes, it certainly was different and pretty but at the end of the day it was rougher than an old Borderer to drive… apologies to Borderer fans… it needed a longer wheelbase but that was not the UK needs at that time… however, it was light if that was what you needed. Turning circle of the Queen Mary if you were lucky, crappy seating position… get out of the RC2 and jump in an F10 and it was a different world.

Sue Reed was the sales manager for F/H and she was tasked to try and find some work for the truck, now we never allowed any truck out of the UK but a renter needed to move a machine on a low loader to somewhere in Europe… when he got back we heard all about the trip… good power but sucked fuel, well, I could have told him that about a Cat…

our truck got damaged one evening when it was parked in a customers yard, Mike used it to go pick up a truck in need of servicing, the night shunter decided he needed it moved so took it for a spin, right into a wall in the yard… he blamed the LHD… I blamed it on the fact he only had one eye :open_mouth: !!!

seen quite a few of them here over the years, the nicest of the varients was made by Western Star with the RC2 cab and a top line interior… but cabovers are a rare treat to see over here nowadays… so, just to keep my hand in I’ve bought a Mack MH613 Ultraliner with a 500hp V8 just as a play thing…

too many Ryland stories to tell, would bore everyone, but it was a great time for me at F/H, every day was a different type of panic…!!!

yvr brit…

Nice input!!! For the real enthousiasts whiteroadcommander.de where a lot info and even
restricted width-dimensions for Switzerland were important! Harry earlier highlighted some pictures
of the Lyss-operation (LASTFAHRZEUG AG) region Bern. This vehicle comes from Biel and might be
the one exposed at the Geneva-exhibition, but then without airshield and with 2500 width.

Günter Sattler and Daniel Steiner founded LASTFAHRZEUG AG, respectively workshop and sales.

I often saw several of similar White Road Commander (sometimes 4 or 5 in convoi) at the fruit-
auction in Eindhoven-region. They delivered the nice dark-red cherries, mmmm

Herewith a picture I discovered on earlier mentioned website, very similar to the one Robert gave.

White-RC-II-2300.jpg

Was that when the fruit veilings still had a big dial at the front and seats like being in the cinema for the bidders to occupy? I sat in on a veg auction in Venlo once, back in the jaren seventig! Robert

You were in Grubbenvorst I guess, between the many trucks of KEMPEN, the blue ones, and even
Van Steenbergen with fruit and vegetables for the US army in Germany?

Indeed the auctions like in a cinema! In Mechelen (between Antwerp and Brussels) there was an
auction/veiling with even 4 clock’s running at the same time, be careful or you clocked brussels
sprouts and not peaches! lol

Just found (the recent removal still surprises me with un-opened boxes) another White
Road Commander 2 from Transport Fr. Gillis-Driessen of Turnhout. Snapped early '80s

Luiknatie (actually a company dedicated to handling cargo in the port) had also a White, later
obtained by a collectioneur and carefully preserved in old livery

White-RoadCommander1-Luiknatie-Antwerpen.jpg

No mud-guards on drive or 2nd steer axles! Regards Chris

IMG_NEW.jpg

After A-J had his irregularities due to removal, that pushed me a bit to search in the boxes,
with binders of specs, benchmark-info, brochures and it is a lot…the majority Mack, White,
Autocar, FTF, even Pegaso, Fiat, Unic and many other more or less competive stuff…

White was a very strong brand in Europe, but Mack had stronger knowledge and heritage then.
I scanned some info out of an executive brochure from 09/1975 when CDB and Geveke were on

Perhaps it is now the time to admit and conclude that it was very challenging to be involved ‘between’
the great brands and to proceed with your dedicated portfolio, DAF (sorry A-J) as the least agressive
but sure very ‘lazy’ in the market as they were so much keen on the WHOLE market and Volvo as well
as Mercedes-Benz in fact very receptive/lame, whereas Scania and MAN were (still) hands-on!

On a US-level, Mack, White and Ford had the better cards, Ford collapsed in their EURO-debacle a lot!

adr:

I was weekended with this guy in France sometime in the early 80s, maybe someone out there knows the wagon/driver.

I worked on this motor as a 16 year old apprentice, was owned by a bloke who was subbing for kammac would be 1986-7 took me all day to get the wheels off the tag axle they were so tight had to get oxy gear to heat em up .seem to think it had been in a smash as it kept scrubbing tyres and we found out the chassis was twisted

Thanks Rob,that some fuel tank it’s got be a thousand liters.

If we are talking tanks - look at these buggers

we have 200 galls on the nearside
and a total of 150 gallons on the offside (2 tanks)

Yes. I’ve just looked at the article about that particular truck that you posted on page one of this thread, to see if it mentioned the size of the tank but it doesn’t! Robert
