Lorries using the fast lane

On the M40 last night the speed was reduced to 50mph,also the signs inicated lane one closed.
So,I reduce to 50 and take up the middle lane.No less than 3 trucks coming up behind then overtook me in lane 3.I dont know why the left lane was closed, couldnt see any reason.I pulled back aftetwards. It always amazes me how drivers are prepared to risk a fine and points just to make that little bit more progress.
How about you?
Would you have overtaken me too…

was the inside lane closed as in a red x or closed as in coned off. I guess if it was coned off there is an argument for using the outside lane as it then becomes a 2 lane road and with the self apointed entitled that cant even use the correct lane untill the vey last moment i guess they would think they could use the outside lane.

As to your speed didnt you know that as a lorry driver your supposed to foot to the floor at all times then brake like mad if you see a camera flash on the gantry in front of you.

You will get a lot of these types going up to the hubs to collect the parcels

I plod along at such speed that overtaking is very rarely an issue

If Lane 1 of a 3 lane Motorway is closed (either by cones or a “Red X” electronic sign) then that carriageway no longer has “three or more lanes open for traffic travelling in that direction” and so the offside lane prohibition does not apply for the length of the restriction.

No,it was just one of those diagram type things,no red x and no sign of anything in lane 1

Advisory only then (although note that some “wicket” style electronic signs incorporate a Red X - and those are mandatory).

So yes, those HGV drivers using the offside lane could well be making themselves liable for a fine of up to £2,500.

Not very likely though as even if they were seen or snapped they could point to the “advisory” signs and the obstruction they thought they could make out in the darkness up ahead - which they assumed was the reason for the signs…

What is the legal status of passing a wide load covering lanes 1 and 2? Stuff at 40mph would generate quite a queue behind.

No idea but I’m not sitting behind it :exclamation:

I dont overtake them.I just sit behind them

On the M40, I don’t think that has a variable speed limit, is that right? So the 50 would only be advisory. (As said, if lane one is closed by any means, lane 3 is available to use.)
Dam right I would be overtaking you [emoji2] job and knock and not doing anything illegal.

Why were you in the middle lane? Unless you were overtaking you should have been in Lane 1. YOU USE ALL OPEN LANES UNTIL YOU GET TO THE MERGE POINT THEN MERGE IN TURN. That’s even in the Highway Code. They overtook you because you were needlessly sat in lane 2 doing 50MPH for an advisory not a legally required 50 MPH (it wasn’t in a red circle so is advisory only) when you weren’t overtaking so were MIDDLE LANE HOGGING BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT. What’s even worse is you’d not even got to the yellow lane closure marker boards, you’d literally just passed under ADVISORY signs of a lane closure with an ADVISORY limit that are usually put up over a mile before where the signs for the lane closure begins.

Given that and the fact you call the outside lane the fast lane and don’t know how zip merging is supposed to work or the difference between advisory and mandatory road signs methinks you need to go get some driving lessons or go back to Tesco home delivery.

I dont do it like that.If it indicates the lane is closed,Im there straight away.If I wait till the last second, they might not let me in and I’ll end up smashing into the cones.
I dont think the highway code is referring to motorways here.I think that merging rule mostly applies to slow moving urban traffic

Passing a wide load or using the offside lane to avoid immediate danger are the two main exceptions set down in the legislation.

What is this “fast lane” you speak of ?

I suggest you know what lane it is…

I overspend most weekends.

My bank send me infringements although I never have to sign them though.
