i used to be away all week doing grain for under 8 pound an hour
Thats Burgess for ya…spent all his money on tidy kit for his blue eyed ■■■ licking boys!!
Neillf…was it you who i met in Pulborough, you saw my Continental express jacket and said…" oh, you one of Johnny Meads boys are you?" When i had a stint with F.L Gamble on the tippers.
Another job that was crap pay/unachievable bonuses.
When you worked for burgess, did you run into shorham a lot ? Remember many a day there with dad. He was on the surebulk contract, along with hurst who had one of the first f16’s i remember
i know what you mean about burgess’ (although they are part of days now). sadly i only had an 04 volvo which was horrible. all the others had nicer motors tho and were pretty handy with the metal polish woe betide you if the truck wasn’t shiney.
they are still in and out of shoreham a fair bit i believe. not as much as they used to though.
mataos32:
very nice! alot of work and effort went into them by the looks of it. the one on the right looks like my old one. do you work for them?
Nope dont work for them, im head greenkeeper at Hill Barn golf course in Worthing, west sussex
remember christmas’s green erfs delivering to work years ago
but did them mainly because i used to go with my dad (bob holcroft) when he worked for eric bell on the corn cart, and they just stood out for me, hense the models.
think dads still mates with a couple of their drivers.
The daf took 3rd best daf in show at the gaydon truck model show this year

D.E NEWHAVEN,TERRY POVEY,JUST STOPPED FOR A QUICK MINT UP,FANCY A CON LECHE SKIPPY.
Blimey! A name from the past!! His brother-in-law was my old transport manager when I worked for Dobbs’ in the '80’s. I remember Terry telling us the stories of his Spanish jaunts!
Great pics mate, I didn’t realize Mr Ersser had so many motors.
Regards,
Mark.
re. T. povey i did many trips with skippy for years all over spain, great times.always had a different motor on D.E because of his long holidays in oz.hope terry sees this link, he was always carrying a camera everywhere.theres a lot of motors that was on D.E hes got pics of.he made some really good models aswell, with loads of details, motors kitted out M/E spec,oz styles, and D.E replicas.hope hes still got them as they would be nice to see again.
I remember there were 3 of these Rosier units working on traction out of newhaven when I started my 1st full time job for Montgomery in 1995. Compared to my beat up scania that had been ragged to death by day and night men at toddington before being sent down to us lowly outbased trampers they always looked like new. The last time I saw 1 was sunk to it’s axles on a grass verge just outside cowfold. I believe Rosier were taken over by securicor sometime in the late 90’s.
Other firms I remember pullin traction out of newhaven at the time were Pendice who I believe are still going, Boniface who I haven’t seen for years, Holloway from hailsham who I think runs tippers now and also Pat Pallett from coalvillle who were running white and blue F cabbed globetrotters.
Despite having lived on the sussex coast all of my life I’ve only ever worked for 2 sussex firms.
The1st was D.R. Bailey from ford who I went to work for to get on the euro work. I spent 18months running to spain in various MANs ,IVECOs and SedAks to be given an FH12 globetrotter 2months before they packed up the euro work and all the units went back to volvo.
The only other sussex firm is F.L. Gamble from Worthing where I’ve worked for 7 years. When I started they ran tippers, grabs, RoROs, sweepers and low-loaders totalling nearly 50 trucks . The firm has changed a lot in 7 years and now all thats left is 2 low-loaders and a crane lorry.
I also did a short stint for this crowd but a few years before this pic was taken because all the trucks were R reg when I was there. At the time we had 3 Daf SSC, 3 Volvo GTXL and 5 Topline Scanias on Gib and 5Daf SC on UK work. I loved the run to Gib but the double manning wasn’t for me.

KOOPS,HAPPY DAYS
Cheers
Neilf
that was my old scania in the pic, went all over europe in that great motor, another good job that finished, rosier newhaven closed down moved us up to purfleet.then they bought daniel ashbys,so we worked together with them at aylesford newsprint, what a blinding job,all over benlux nice.6months later up to harlow main office.sorry m8 all newhaven drivers redundant.when its gone its gone, and its never the same.where next.i remember that day when neal (RIP)avoided a car and ended up down a grass bank, poor bloke was never the same after.
D.E NEWHAVEN,SHIPPED OUT TO ROMANIA A 6 WHEELER COME BACK A 4,WHAT A TRIP MOTOR A SHED FELL TO BITS EVERYDAY,BROUGHT MOST OF IT BACK IN THE SIDE LOCKER,STILL GOT IT BACK.WAITING TO SHIP BACK ZEEB/PURF.
D.E NEWHAVEN,SOMEWHERE IN YUGO ON ROUTE TO BULGARIA,ALAN RUSSELLS GEARBOX BLOWS ON HIS TRANSCON,TOWED ON A STRAIGHT BAR TO SO
FIA,WHAT A NITEMARE.
NOT GOOD ON ROADS LIKE THIS,LETS KEEP GOING.
Les Radfcliffe hasn’t worked for Gambles for a few years now. I’ve only met him once and IIRC he now works for network rail. I don’t remember an OD by the name of Phil when I was there. The only OD with an FH12 was Pat Dent (RIP). We did have a plain White FH left ■■■■■■ but I’m sure Bailey owned that motor and it was driven by a guy called John Bienna who I believe now works for Continental Express.
Koop
Yes that was me in pulborough. I moved up to horsham on the low-loaders just after that and thats the only reason I’m still here. It was a good job but we’re down to just 3 lorrys now and looking a bit shakey. The tippers and sweepers were both sold off 3-4 years ago.
r slicker
The name Tony Emmery kind of rings a bell from Baileys. Was he a short skinny fella who worked for Gordon Lucking or a short scotsman who was an owner driver?.
I don’t know if its a seasonal thing but I cycle along the back of shoreham harbour a couple of times a week and there are always a few of burgess’s trucks parked up in the evenings.
Now seeing as this thread dips back into the 70s heres a bit of a long shot. When I was at school in the mid 70s one of my mates dad’s used to do the M/E. His name was Dixon and he lived in lancing. He used to be away for weeks at a time but I remember he was big on building Lego models when he was home. I only remember seeing his truck once and I’m sure it was a dark coloured DAF 2800. I know the details are a bit vague but just wondered if anybody knew of him?. I lost touch with my schoolmate years ago.
no tony was about 5’7 built like a brick outhouse. he had a fh on bailleys and did portugal etc for them. he was there till the end as they put him on uk work and he jacked soon after. great bloke. worked at axtra/ganders all over the place. he lived in shorham but i belive he is now in lancing somewhere near the test station. and retired. thanks. brian
Gavin McArdle:
Hi there was a firm from Brighton (I think) doing M/E in the 70’s with red MAN’s they got ■■■■■■■ with Whitetrux IIRC. I am sure I have seen a pic somewhere on T.N.
Aren’t Shakespears fron Sussex?
Gavin
Hi again Gavin, thanks for the number you pm’d me!
The firm from Worthing with red MAN’s was called HRS, I’ve posted a few pics on here from a mate of mine, Derrick Martin, he had his first M/E job with them in mid 70’s. I’ll try and put one up from photobucket in a mo.

Here you go Gavin, hope this is the firm you were thinking about.
Come on Terry p and Bunter get some pics on here to keep it going,i know youve got plenty of photos of the old days on TOE,be good to see them again.i know Dez Ewins has got some good pics of early days on there at shoreham.
D E Newhaven; on route to plovdiv 92,first trip to bulgaria.Running with a couple of Brooks Trans from purfleet.knocker,k,lamb.showing me the ropes on the way down.good old boys been all over, both past away in different accidents in Romania not to sure how (R.i.P). Many different stories flying about. As i found out myself doing trips out there you do take your own life in your hands,no road sense what so ever.
In queue at Rusovce Bratislava
next border Varsand Romania.
look at the rear lights on this then.
This is why people keep saying driving in Romania is bad news in the dark, many people have taken chances at night and hit horse n carts.Dont know what its like now.maybe still the same.
Great pics L8FR8, I never knew that D.E went so far, I might have given him a call instead of Radcliffes!! (kidding, Mr R was a good boss!) Sounds like you enjoyed the job too, Rumo certainly sounds a dodgy one. When did D.E pack up then?

Re. D.E yeah did quite a bit of Rumo, Bulgy,Greece towards the end as most of the spanish work dried up.The last motors sold was in 91/92(i think),But he still traded as D.L.E. As a freight fowarder as he still had most of the wine for Ferry freighting.I diddnt mind doing Rumo.Bulgy but some trips were just crazy with border queues,75 hours m/t at Ruse to reload Rumo and other drivers probably done more than that,it was just another bad move to choose that border, some good trips some bad.It was all that was going down on coast at the time as i only wanted to do continental work.
I remember when i was a kid, my dad used to drive a tipper for A & J Hirst. Alot of the work was down to Shoreham. Does anyone remember P D Transport? they used to carry timber and paper if i remember rightly. Blue & White Scammell Crusaders and Scania 110s. I also remember a firm called Gardners from Bognor, i think his name may have been Mick Gardner?. Ive also got a cracking photo of an ADM Volvo F10, Reg no MAA859T. I would put it on here but its too big to put on my scanner, i think it may have been used by Volvo or ADM for promo purposes.
