Thanks John. The reason i asked was this. I was talking to a driver the other day, who told me that her father used to have his own haulage firm in Bognor. She told me her dad had some lorries with Gardner & Daughter painted on the front, and yes they did run Dafs. She also told me that her dad did a lot of tipper work and general haulage and that he,s since passed away. He also had a brand new Ford Transcon that was featured in Commercial Motor. Unfortunatly i forgot his name, but you could be right with Merrick. Does anyone else remember this firm?.

Hi, Anyone know if D.Fry are still running doing Round timber?,another company pulling timber was Bruntons I think they were in East Sussex close to the Kent border.
Regards MaggieD
D Fry still have the Foden artic,it was at the Ardingly Vintage show near Haywards Heath in July this year, but haven’t seen it on the road for ages.I believe Bruntons packed up quite a while ago when the owner passed away.
Anybody got any photos of JJ Adam or Merrydown trucks?

What about SHOREHAM TRANSPORT or IFIELD TRANSPORT …another couple that have gone…
Ifield Transport is Now PF couriers, Ifield was run by Brothers Derek & Tony Simmons,Based at Lowfield heath right next door to the Gatwick runway. Tony’s Son John run the workshop in Horley.
Rumour has it that Derek allegedly plundered the pension drivers pension fun to buy his Daughters horse and Scania Horsebox!!, This was only found out when Derek died and the bank Told Tony that the company was virtually bankrupt.
Tony sold out to PF, But stayed on as a warehouseman at Lowfield heath (which distributed HPC compressors and Duracell batteries amongst other stuff)
They run a mixed fleet thru their time, Bedford TK & TM, Scania, Seddon Atkinson, DAF, all engaged on national and international work (most air freight to/from Luxembourg)
As well as employed drivers they had a few regular owner drivers, “ginger” hollands (now RMG Hollands Transport), “polly” Polhill, Bob (he came from Reigate)
Tony Simmons now lives in Lincolnshire, he now runs a ww2 dodge weapons carrier, John Simmons has a very successful American Car Repair Bussiness in Pease Pottage, Both excellent people to know and work with.
Memories of Derek Simmons are of his Short temper and his Purple Rage’s, He would go absolutely mad at the let little thing, purple faced with veins sticking out of his neck and forehead, he was a heart attack waiting to happen.
Also Doe’s anybody remember the Own account operators from Sussex that have long gone, Allen West, Gross Cash Registers, Greens, Of Brighton.
MSE, Suggs, APV, APV Paramount, Duracell (formerly Mallory) of Crawley
Oh and back to Sussex Hauliers J R Matthews of Crawley, red and blue albions I think, now a tipper operator in Crawley

And another firm that did timber etc, I’m sure from Ringmer way, I always got stuck behind them through the forest up the A22, they had some fairly old motors that struggled a bit!! If I recall any more I’ll post them.Brookie
Blimey! it’s taken me nearly 2 years to remember their name, COMBERS from Newick. Anyone recall them? Always well freighted, always a mile of traffic behind them. If you got up through Ashdown Forest on the A22 by 05.00 you’d miss getting stuck behind them
Regards,
Mark.

Not far from me then! I’m Eastbourne, ex-Hailsham boy. I remember the Merrydown drivers and some of JJ’s. Shame there is a lack of Merrydown pics (and JJ’s come to that!), they were a tidy outfit.

I remember them well, just down the road from my mum! I saw a Holloway motor in Italy about mid-90’s? I think it was a Daf 95 pulling a fridge, but not 100%, but definitely a “Hailsham” Holloways motor. The driver didn’t want to talk much and I’m not the greatest talker!
