Hi timbo, no the guy I knew was Derek Martin, lived in Hailsham. He qiut M/E and sold his motor to become a decorator. He was driving a taxi last time I saw him, in Eastbourne.

As for merrydown, remember their tidy Dafs, followed them many a time through Ashdown forest on the A22, did you know Dumpy and Dickie Bennett?
I wonder what happened to them?

brookie.

Hi Brookie
I remember Merrydown only 3 miles from me, my dad (mick martin) worked for them till 68 he was driver then workshop manager. my mum she could drink the stuff and leave the most harden drinker stumbling. her brother which my dad gave him a job in 65 dave brown ex driver he was made redundant when they packed up what 10 years back?..
i tried to rent there trailers and advertise for them in the early 90s but mick gabitas put a block on it. we all know dumpy i think he still lives in eastbourne
do u rember ■■■■ sands and les taggart loads of names local company.
my dad did sell the md his first car mr richard purdy.

Hi Timbo, the name Dickie Sands rings a bell, I think I was only a lowly teenage box- van driver about his time, not quite up to their level! Did you know of any Dobbs’ boys? Thats who I started out as a driver with. It was through them that I got to know the “big boys”, Watford Gap a regular monday morning first stop for a cuppa. That was in the pre-M25 days of having to go through London. Blimey this is making me feel like an “old boy”!

Where abouts are you then Timbo? Are you driving?

regards,

Mark.

Hi again Tim,

I live behind what was ADM in Eastbourne, shame they closed, I knew a few of their boys. As for the guy from Newhaven you mentioned (Mr D E!), a mate of mine thought he fancied doing a bit of Spain, he’d never gone abroad, so he blagged a job with said guy. Loaded JCB’s from Utoxeter (?), tipped Madrid, loaded onions Valencia, tipped Glasgow market, loaded JCB’s again, did it in a week, told he “hung about too much”. Only trip he ever did abroad. End of story!!

Lots of familiar names on your thread, all gone I think. :frowning:
