Richard Evans should still be running timber.Great company with lovely bosses.Am I correct?
We used to service and sell spares to an owner driver from Peacehaven who had a green 6X2 Scania 141 and used to pull TOE trailers out of Newhaven, Ken Nightingale I think his name was!
Is he still about albeit retired I dare say!

Another couple of names from Sussex past, do you remember Star Transport? They did Greece etc in mid eighties, based in Crowborough I think, only a couple of motors. And Merrydowns own Dafs, or Mayhew Chickens too? Danny Erser from Newhaven (Volvos and tilts I think?). Who had the Volvo F89 pulling TOE trailors in late '80s?. And another firm that did timber etc, I’m sure from Ringmer way, I always got stuck behind them through the forest up the A22, they had some fairly old motors that struggled a bit!! If I recall any more I’ll post them.Brookie
Jeez , Merrydown Cider wasn"t it ? justv trying to recall the village off the A22 where they hwere based , but i got brain fade …Mayhew Where they not on the A26 heading up from Uckfield towards Crowborough Seem to recall delivering to both of them in an old Dodge G75 7.5tonner when i was about 18 working for PHS Transport out of East Grinstead ( now Nightfreight )…

Horam is the village you’re thinking of el sumo, Mayhew became Grampian chickens, gone now though, a mate of mine had a Daf superspacecab XF pulling their trailers, so yet another Sussex haulier now packed in
Herons Guill (?) is the village and yep, A26 just north of Uckfield was Mayhew.
As a child I used to spend holidays with my grandparents who lived near Rustington.
Can still remember seeing, R.T Page, Volvos & Leylands, Gamble’s 4 wheel D series tippers, when they were still a small firm.
Blue Prince Mushrooms, Seddon Atki & Bedfords, Crispa Cress hads some smart DAF 2100 4 wheelers and whatever happened to Taylors who were a waste disposal firm and ran in a lime green livery.
Be good to see some pics!
Cheers
Mark
I wonder if any of you old Sussex guys can remember two people from Sussex who ran down to the Middle East in the late 70s early 80s.
One was May Freight from a place called Mayfield, an owner driver called Mick or Dave who I met a couple of times and he was a really nice fellow.
The other was a bloke who we called Lawrence of Hastings, no guesses where he came from.
Regards Steve.
Another couple spring to mind, ARTS removals from Ditchling, did a lot of Spain with smart wagon and drags.
BAILEY fridges from Littlehampton way I think,
FARRANT AND REID from Hastings/Bexhill, green Dafs?
PHOENIX MARINE, my mate Phil used to drive their Scammell Crusader with a low loader taking boats to France and Spain.
GANDERS from Henfield, or are they still going?
Blimey, gets you thinking doesn’t it? Where they all gone
Brookie.

Hi mushroomman, the only ones I knew of in my neck of the woods (Hailsham and Eastbourne) doing M/E was my old schoolmates dad, his name is Derek Martin, I’m sure he had a Blue or Green Scania 141/111, he was an O/D pulling for a London firm but I don’t know who. He did it from mid '70’s 'til early '80’s, then packed it in. Another guy locally had a couple of motors doing the same at the same time, I only remember his surname was Boreman/ Boerman. If only I was a few years older and I might of had a chance meself!!
Cheers,

I started my working & driving life at Crispa Cress & was there until a few weeks before it closed down & production moved to the Southport branch.
After that i moved to Hammonds Removals & Transport in Worthing until they closed 4 years later.Shane

Taylors were bought out by Wimpey waste who in turn was bought out by UK waste who in turn was bought out by Biffa waste and they are still in East Worthing.

Were they by I.G Bacon’s place?
That’s right. Taylors had a small yard between Gamble’s & the lorry park, which is now occupied by B&W and Rossetts (formerly IG Bacon), the Merc dealer
Cheers for the updates guys,
What about Francis ( Parker) Transport ran a big fleet of Seddon Atki 400 eight wheelers & artics. I heard they were taken over by Tarmac, is that right?
Also remembering the tippers & skip wagons of F Avann, think they were taken over by R.T Page?

I am not really sure, I think he had a Volvo at one time and an M.A.N. a couple of years later. His trailer I think was green with a belly tank and trailer boxes with the name May Freight on the tilt. I am sure that he said that he came from Mayfield in Sussex.
