Hi Ian

What a turn up. I know someone who will be very interested to see those Foden and ERF pics!

I remember the second Cat Foden you bought, that nearly got written off earlier that you might have thought! I remember going up to the quarries with Dad one morning, and somewhere around Maiden Bradley as you come through the village is a sharp bend. At three in the morning, I remember Dad’s trick was to switch the headlights to sidelights to see if anything was coming around this particular corner so he could keep the throttle buried and the speed up. However, on this particular morning (your truck was only three days old) I remember Dad doing his usual with the lights and a transit van did the same coming the other way! My arse was going like a rabbits nose as we hurtled past each other! I will take that memory to my grave !!

Nice to see you on here.

Lee

Hi I was sent this pic in an email of Edmund Gerald who used to be at Four Post Hill, Hill Lane, where Reeves and later Begard and Molo’s had yards. Its all built on now.

Anyone remember this company?

does anyone on this site remember an old soton company called CEFtransport??the owner used to be John Carter who then moved to POOLE,i worked for a time both in soton and poole,i think he then moved over to holland i think, but have not heard anything about him since,

Hi Ya Fergie (Bev),
Confusing for me as I also know Dave (Fergie47)! (Not sure what the 47 implies, age, weight, shoe size or IQ- Sorry Dave)
Anyhow Fergie I’m glad you got back to me.
I hope I’m writting all this in the correct forum. As I was based in Salisbury and not Southampton. But i consider myself a ex soton haulier as 90% of my work was in thae area.

Those day eh? The older you get the more sensible you get I suppose, well I did anyway. I wonder what all those old bu**ers used to think about us back then. Now we’re all old n’ grey, their a load of tear asses all racing around at speeds up to 56mph! Criky on those wagons they had another 2 or 3 gears to go up and beyond 56. (shouldn’t boast it but I remember hitting 95, still in gear, down one of those hills on the 303 near Chicklade early one morning, loaded) shouldn’t talk about that sort of thing on here I suppose as it may give ‘you’ a bad impression eh?

As your paid by the hour now I bet you go as slow as you can? I didn’t even know Hanbury Davies had gone and become Wincanton, shows how in touch I am.

Did you know I drove for Russell Davies for a while? I got the sack form there after only 6 months. Pi**ed me right off as that’s the only time I’ve ever been sacked from any job. I got stuck in a loading bay at a freight forwarders up in West Bromwich late as usual on a Friday afternoon, stuck because the loading bay was a cheap skate hole in the ground surfaced with loose scalpings. Once loaded with a 20’ on a slider I never had enough traction to be able to get out of the hole. Eventually got out with a tug of help from a fork lift but didn’t get away without damaging one of the rear drive axle tyres on a sharp stone. I ripped off a lump of rubber the size of a 50p piece down to the wire. Phoned into RD’s office to report that I got a damaged tyre and they sent out a tyre fitter to replace it. Later on Monday I was called into the office and sacked! Being told that I had been running around on an illegal tyre for several weeks!!! Don’t think so. Can’t remember the sh*t heads name who was running it in soton but I bet someone reading this does. It was when Russell Davies first set up in soton around 1994 time. I was running in NOL colours on contract. Shame they went too as NOL was a good bunch to answer too.
I flitted around a bit after that back to P&O casual days and nights, never become “one of the lads” though! But by then I was old enough not to care what others thought. I later had this weird bloke at “Boarhunt” offer me a office job (he wasn’t weird really)…but that’s another story to be told by another close member on here!!! Daa Daa Daaa.

Ian , 95mph in gear? I can vouch for that if you are refering to the “snorker” Foden. Dad topped her out going down into Wyle on the 303 one afternoon. That thing went like a bloody train. They dont build trucks like that anymore with all this modern electronic ■■■■■■■■ to slow us down and “lower emissions” Who gives a monkeys if the world is warming up

Hello Ainacs
Im back in the land of the living after a long illness , just . Fancy that you finding a pic of Edmund Geralds ,they had the oldest fleet in Southampton as I remember , in the 60s I was on SRT , do you remember the Russian Timber ships that use to dock up on the town key , there was every haulier in Southampton moving the wood up to Monty Meyers in the new docks , a crane would dump a big unsorted bundle of the stuff between the bolsters , you had to chain it down and I got a smack in the teeth when a Silvester shot back at me once there , luckily I must have had my mouth open as usual ,and bit right through my tongue and it swelled up so I couldnt speak for a week , Mrs was pleased . I was sure I would loose the lot over them railway lines as the joined the road of the key, well one of Geralds did all over the road , good days .

IAN ROOT , hows your Dad Jim , I spoke to him a couple of years ago he was over 80 then , great fella , often I drop into see him after he retired , do you remember , you had suped up American cars with fancy paint jobs you did yourself , when you bought that ERF with the twin splitter you gave me a drive to see how many nutrals I could find .
Don`t this site drag up the oldies .
Regards Frenchy
