Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

IT IS SAD LOT OF GOOD BLOKES ON THERE, LEARNT TO ROPE AND SHEET WITH ROYERS IE SID WHEN THEY WERE ON THEIR OWN AT EASTLIEGH . : :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Further to the Conning issue (just seen 'em on South Today, sad day); The earlier partners in the group JG BOYES Warehousing used to be on MIllbrook Road, next to the TA Centre. They had a light blue Transcon and a light blue Bedford TM. That was about 1974/5. The building was then taken over by ACS Car Sales.

An open reply to Bojangles who mailed me, sorry, read your message and deleted it, expecting it to be on here as a PM, but it wasnt! Doh! Remember Star Transporters, Blue Leader etc, but local show I dont remember. CRAFT moment! But yes I can confirm “THE Monkey Spanner” IS on channel! lol

Another pic courtesy Chris Hill this time a demonstration against the new ‘O’ licencing laws brought out by the lateBarbara Castle (who couldn’t even drive!!!)and introduced the breathalyser among other things.

It’s on the old lorry park behind the Southampton Swimming Baths opposite the Post House Hotel in the mid 60’s.

A line up of some Baker lorries and drivers.

Don’t remember that one Pat, but do remember being there a few years later, in the same lorry park, to demonstrate about the £1 an hour !! along side my fellow communist, brother Mappo the Red, who also wanted 50p for a night out AS WELL as the quid !
Cheeky bugger !! :unamused: :smiling_imp:

Typical

Hey you bloody pair, pack it in …must be someone else,s turn by now. :laughing: :laughing:

If you cast your mind back Fergie, we got the £1 an hour before the other Soton companies cos
we were on for Smiths, being a Scottish firm who were awarded that amount before the English.
As for night out money i was quite happy with my five bob ( 25p to younger members ) :slight_smile: :slight_smile:

I do remember Tone, we had to go and support the poor old English boys, en-slaved by their tyrannical masters, where as you say, we’d already got the precious pooooound !! Don’t think we hung around though, if memory serves, we were packed off up to Scotland for a week ! £1 p.h eh! couldn’t buy a cup of tea for that these days, are we getting old Mappo, living in the past, like very old people !!! :smiling_imp:

Don’t know whether you were at Smiths at the time that a union guy called Fred the Red worked for them ? He was going to change the world and the way we worked. Unfortunately we already had one of the best jobs with pay, trucks, equipment, and contracts, so there was nothing he could change. He didn’t last long, last time I heard
( going back YEARS ) he was driving for Smiths Crisps out of Eastleigh. He seemed a decent enough bloke, just the wrong attitude at the wrong time for the wrong company. Anyone remember him and what happened to him ?

FUNNY THING HAPPENED THIS MORNING THAT JUST MADE ME LAUGH; ANY WAY HAD TO TAKE DAD (POLEY JOE) TO GET HIS FLUE JAB AT THE DOCS WHO DO YOU THINK WE BUMP INTO MR BOB ENGLISH LOOKS REALLY WELL AT 76 AND SAID HELLO TO EVERYONE ;; ANY WAY GO INTO SURGERY AND THIS OLD WOMAN CAME UP TO ME NOW DONT GET EXCITED CHARLIE SEE JUST WANTED TO TALK TO ME ; HA HA ;
ANY WAY SHE ASKED IF MY DAD WON AN AWARD FOR DRIVING BACK IN THE LATE SIXTYS OR EARLY SEVENTYS, YES I SAID IRU THING TURNS OUT SHE WORKED ON THE DRAGON AND REMEMBERS LOADS ;THEN SHE LEFT AND I DIDNT EVEN GET HER NAME WHAT A P OFF NEVER MIND :wink: :wink: :wink: :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :slight_smile: REGARDS ALAN
