I can’t remember where I ‘lifted’ this photo from, it might have been somewhere on this thread many years ago but I think that it’s a classic and it’s worth showing again.
I am fairly certain that this photo was taken on the A58 at Heap Bridge near Heywood, as you can see a bulk tipper belonging to Hanson Haulage in the background. The tipper was probably turning right to go up Heap Brow where Hansons had a depot. I remember a post office, a newsagent and a cafe so I wonder if the cafe had transport accommodation upstairs.
The shops must have been converted into houses over the years and tried their hand at other businesses.
Now this is a blast from the past one of Star car transporter’s F86’s, based in West Quay road in TIP’s yard where I also parked for a time. These 86’s were later joined by new F7’'s run by Den White, a lot of the drivers were into banger racing back in the day as was the resident fitter Dave Coombes who hailed from Salisbury and started his fitting career at Unit Commercials the Scania dealership, he had a sort of bender to work in made of scaffold poles and old tilt sheets to fend of the elements. TIP’s yard had pot holes you could drown in, they had a toilet block but only for there staff and remember some chap had been refused entry so he climbed into the back of a tilt and left a lovely brown specimen for them to find later, the yard was also the home of Trailer Care who did what there name implied and did work for me also, long time ago now but the memories are still there but now all built on, gone but not forgotten, Buzzer
The second picture is a Volvo run by L.G.Bateman who were from Poole way, I worked along side this truck and they also had a Mercedes think 1924 father & son who was called Simon and when it was collecting the money time the Grand father came as well, they also did alot of banana haulage back in the day, Buzzer.

Have Chappels sold out to Laso? Anyone know?Yes official handover in September
Thank you, I saw the O licence application at Chappels address so that flagged it up. A shame but life goes on I guess, hopefully the drivers just move across.
Makes sense for Laso.

Makes even more sense for Laso & Chappels given Laso’s scale & locations.
I have a lot of admiration for family or original companies managing to stay independent, was saddened to see Lamberts go but Ray’s Darren & Clive were never going be able to take it over.
Thanks.

Thanks Chris for sorting that one out, I saw Mark last week when picking up me raspberries and he said nought, little information is dangerous in the wrong hands. Buzzer

J.H.Prince & Co Ltd delivered this AEC Mercury in August 1959 to C.Bew & Sons of Purfleet & Southampton. Like many of Bew’s 4 wheelers, it carried an insulated container. Bew’s main traffics centred around margarine production.
In Southampton, Bews were based at the Pellerin Auguste Sundew Margarine factory in Princes St Northam(which also produced Bel processed cheese) The site was later occupied by Bristol St Motors Commercial Vehicle Dealership.
Bew’s Purfleet operation was centred around Van den Burgh & Jurgen’s Thurrock Margarine factory which produced Stork margarine, processed cheeses & soft drinks
A.C.Jameson of Heywood worked with Bews Purfleet office & in 1963 Jamesons acquired Bews which became Jameson’s London office. & after 4 years in Bew’s yellow & blue colours,Y0W 276 was repainted in Jameson’s maroon livery.
Buzzer, the photo of Phil Dibden posted on 21/06/23 at 09.36 am sat by his MB, the Scania with the Southern Transport Services trailer is definitely an ex Peter Gilder and sons ltd tractor unit in his colours, if he didn’t sell it, it would have probably been on the Kasakhstan runs T/A Russanglia ltd.

In March 1967,the “Torrey Canyon” ran aground off Lands End & 120,000 tons of crude oil washed ashore around the Cornish coast. Many vehicles were mobilised from the Southampton area to move drums of dispersant down to Cornwall over the Easter period.
Dasic Chemicals Romsey used Jameson Any suggestions on who’s unit is pulling the Jameson tilt ?
Other hauliers moved drums from Fawley
Any suggestions on who’s 1966 So’ton registered (GOW 294D) rigid this may have been or the driver ?
Though the drums may have been loaded by fork trucks with 'grab o matic 'attachments, they were discharged the old fashioned way
Dropping them onto old tyres - You wouldn’t get away with that today as H & S would probably insist on the use of new tyres !
All pictures probably taken at Falmouth.

Reminds of my time at Midland Storage. We had the Dow chemicals contract bringing bulk loads from Kings Lynn for storage and distibution.
That part was easy enough and a welcome backload, but the delivery from boxes to 45 gallon drums all multi drop to shops was handballed including the drums. Every shop was required to have 2 or 3 large tyres and, in the middle of a busy high street it was a common sight to see them rolled off the back or side with 2 shop workers destailed to control the bounce.

From memory, didn’t the trucks involved in this have a “TC” sign on the cab that allowed them to exceed the drivers hours at that time?
