had digs here all week then went back with the Friday truck back home for the weekend. cheers Buzzer
Glad you brought up digs John…ive been trying to think of the digs in Southampton that our Stockton night men use to stay in during the day, I’m not sure where it was but I sometimes picked them up at the top end of Millbrook road by the railway bridge so they wouldn’t be far from that area, I keep thinking they were called after the name of the owner, but its over 50 years ago now… obviously no local lads would have stopped there, but can anyone remeber them ?
Hi Dave, there used to be a big transport cafe where you said in Millbrook, was it Dolly’s ? it was a woman’s name IIRC it is where Calor gas has a shop now by the gate into Freightliners. If I remember it was a wooden place with verander but as you say was 60 years ago now so memory faded cheers John

No, not that one John, this was the town end of Millbrook rd, I’ve a feeling that it was up around the park area near the Gaumont cinema, but as we’ve both said, its 50/60 years ago when now we can’t remember what you had for breakfast
Spardo… exactly, knew a load of digs around the country before sleeper cabs, same as we knew some towns better than the local drivers as they never delivered there, but they knew Southampton better than we did…
Dig wise, if you didn’t know a town and hadn’t booked a bed, just find the cattle market or lorry park and ask, always managed to get in somewhere, even if somewhere was a little “suspect” and the night life slightly on the seedy side…still, best not go there.eh…

Isn’t that the entrance to the modern trendy remaining part of Covent Garden Market, the arched glass bit?
Just off Floral St, it reminds me of the arches but I feel the arches that are still there are lower than this one… I remember seeing Big Tall Arches when we delivered Peaches out of Italy to Covent Garden on a Sunday night…
