Hi Buzzer,
Nomansland near Landford, what a lovely part of the world that is, snook through there on the way to CSG at Pound Bottom one afternoon a few years ago, that drag back up towards Fordingbridge road made the truck sweat a bit! Cheer’s Pete
Yep i remember the Chandlers Ford depot / office and yes it was Norma in the office…got on well with her.
Now that other lady, like you Buzzer, dont recall her name…i know she did the accounts for a couple of owner drivers
as well as of course for Squibbs…
I remember when driving for Squibbs we often used your permits Buzzer…New Forest Freight IIRC…
Now Fergie, being a really old git, drove for them at the old yard…
Balders…i,ve progressed from being grumpy, to a right miserable old git… lol
Mappo your memory aint that bad if you remember New Forest Freight, still registered tome I think may be some one would buy it. Remember when we first met you had uplifted a dumped trailer from Cherbourg for Squibby but it had three punctures and it swiped all your running money out. We met south of Paris at Corbiel services got talking and when I told you I knew Barry he requested I fund you up for the trip, I always carried loads more running money than I actually needed and he promised to repay the minuet I land back in the UK which he did.
We swapped trailers before the Blanc as I had a high load of light tubes on for Skillbeech and your 5th wheel was much lower on the Merc than my F89 and we got away with it, spose you could say one good turn deserves another but it wuzz like that back then every one helped each other, not today sad to say they just toot and keep driving, good old days eh Buzzer.
Hi Buzzer, yes i remember picking up that scabby 01ers tilt…They contacted Barry to do it as a favour
cos of mechanichal problems with there unit…It was a bloody lie…the trailer had been impounded cos
they,d been captured with a Micky Permit…so not only did i have pay the release fee, i also had problems
with the tyres as you mentioned…and the rest as they say is history…

Watch it Mappo…I’ll take your inhaler away…

Sent you a PM John…
morning buzzer,i remember terry winters from Fritham, had a saw mill and like you say used to run mining chocks to most of the coal mines that were running in them days, i also used to run them to the mines in them days to collieries such as Swadlincote, Bagworth and a few more, i think Jim Squibb used to work with them in the early days as well,re Kenny Batton i all ways thought he lived in Totton,i know he used to use the pub on your way out off Totton heading towards Salisbury, was on the right, but cant remember the name of the pub for the life of me,met him several times in there and had a meal with Les Barns another SQUIBBS driver who i ran with to Swiss for a couple of years on the EPS contract running Hawker Hunter jets from Yeovil to Swiss,John who was the other transport company that ran international out of Nomans Land???been there for years but cant remember their name.also can anyone on here tell me if Les Barns is still about as i lost contact with him some years ago,a name that comes to mind is Tony Kimber they ran the middle east for Jim Squibb, think they only did the one trip.he might be able to throw some light on this.

Bev…Barry Squibb’s wife Norma was Tony Kiimbers sister, hence that connection. Tony came off driving and did all the repairs to the wagons and trailers…his middle East trips were with Les Barnes,
Not 100% sure they were with Squibby though.
Kenny Batton lived at Totton, was off sick for a long time ( that’s when I drove the Avon contract) he left shorty after he came back and went to worked at the working man’s social club in Totton…I believe he’s passed on…
Use to bump into Tony Kimber now and then, he has or had a workshop Eastleigh way…a Scammel Crusader 8 wheeler Sampson, and a Contractor or Constructor ? doing Pirelli’s heavy haulage.
Pity he wasn’t on here, he’d have some stories to tell…
Haven’t heard about Les Barnes for many years, guess he’d be in his mid seventies now.
All all long time ago well over 40+ years…
Hello Fergie my old friend, hope you are keeping in good health mate, yes your quite right about Norma and Tony i knew they were brother and sister and was at Norma and Barrys wedding, i know when i was working for Jim that he wanted to have a go at middle east work, Barry asked me if i was interested but declined as i had one or two problems going on at home, foresight would be wonderful, (women) in the end Tony and Les said thy would do the run, think they went Iran then on to Iraq, Baghdad and not sure went on to Jeda and Dubai,as far as i know that was the only trip they did for Jim,but they both my well of down a few trips after that for themselves,re:Kenny, what a lovely fellah, didnt know he had passed on though, like yourself i did a few loads for Avon tyres, took them to Wintertur the other side of Zuric then back into Basle and load out of Roba with yarn back to Woods depot in Harlow, think your right about Les Barns age wise, im 70yrs this August and think he was older than me by about 3/4yrs, how time flys Fergie,
as for Tony your right, smashing bloke, loved his dry sense of hummer and think your right could tell some gut busting stories as well.
Hello Nobby/TIR Original, I have racked my brain for 2 days, and finally remembered Nicks name,We knew him as Nicky Parker,
Foreman driver on the quay at Portsmouth. He would phone the Wigan Depot mid afternoon each day,to give us details of what
was leaving Portsmouth/Horndean at 6pm. At Wigan ,we were classed as day shunters, despite starting work between midnight
and 4am. If my work for tomorrow was Liverpool market,Jack the foreman would say “Have a lie in tomorrow,Start at 5am”.
If you were doing Glasgow Market,it was start at midnight,it usually took over 5 hours to get there,The M6 ended at Carnforth,
which is now junction 35 and 35A. If you had one of the older 150 Gardner Atkinsons, flat out at 48 mph,it was a struggle to
complete the round trip within the legal hours, thank God for the extra log book. I was always impressed with the neatness of
the sheeted loads, you Hampshire boys knew how to sheet and rope a trailer. Regards, Ray Smyth. raysmyth@fsmail.net
Hi Kev 143, good to hear from you again mate, yes your right mate , love it up here its a slower pace of life, and like you say Norfolk is a lovely county,re the ferries, i used Fishguard to Rosslare in those days but i believe that the ferry crossing is no more, but dont quote me on that, when i retired i missed the road for about two years and the comradeship but dont miss it one bit now,Derek and Ian are on for a company called PMP and run out of Southampton, most of the trucks are Scania,Kev try and get those pictures up on here mate there is a thread on here as to how you do it,no use asking me as i get josh my son to do it for me, to much technology for me mate or ask my old mate Mappo he has put loads of pictures on here(hope you dont mind Tony)
HI bev, not a problem…i believe there,s an easier way of doing it now, but here goes.
Firstly Kev, you,ll need to open a " photobucket " account, its free.
then download your photos onto that, then click on the photo you want to put on, and to the right of that pic
is a choice of options…click on the IMG one…then right click on your T/net page, click " paste " and hey presto…
Sound confusing, but as i said there,s allegedly a simpler way of doing it…
I,m sure someone else will be on to explain that…
You can upload direct from your PC/laptop now.
Click on “post reply” then below it says upload attachment. Then it will ask you for the file (wherever it is on your computer) click the file, it will add it to the box, then click attach file. It used to have to be less than 1mb but I think the website will cope with bigger. Once downloaded its there on the thread waiting for you to clout “submit”.

Hello, Further to my search for “Robert Baillie” info, I Thought I might try a different approach,by putting the names of the Portsmouth

Jimmy Farmer Maurice Joel Bob ■■■■■■■ Les Fuge John Fuge Mervyn Wright Ray Golds(RIP) Henry Drzystyk

mappo:
Hi Cluey, i,d be surprised if that was Irun mate, although those masts / pylons look similar
to those in Irun where they tipped the scrap, but rarely saw those multi axle Italian Fiats in Spain.
plus that small Fiat in the background looks to be just a runabout…so i reckon its in Italy somewhere.
I stand to be corrected though…
yes just noticed both trailers are red but i meant the trailor (french one) its on the motor way the peage at Irun ?
Hi Ray…
Two names ring a bell there . Maurice " Maury " Joel and Bob ■■■■■■■■
When I used to run into Maurice , he was an owner driver, but I can’t for the life of me think when that was…
You’ll have to wait whilst the grey matter works away at it , but I’m sure others on here will recognise names and enlighten us…
All the best.
Baldrick.
Hi Baldrick 1953,Thanks for your reply,I only met Maurice a few times, but although he was a night trunker going North,He usually
went to Doncaster Depot and the Yorkshire markets, driving Mk 1 Atkinson 180 Gardner reg NAP 30F.Bob ■■■■■■■ regular destination
was to Wigan Depot, driving Mk1 Atkinson 150 Gardner reg 5510 ET,one of 3 bought second hand from some where near Rotherham.
Two more names from Horndean have appeared in my brain,George Woodcock,Known as Timberdick, and Roy Murfin,He was given
a Volvo, brand new,an F86 Wendy House, reg YCG 734J,It was very often out of service with faults.Robert Baillie never bought another,
like he had intended for future fleet replacement. Regards, Ray Smyth. raysmyth@fsmail.net
Anyone on here remember the French cauliflower runs to the markets at night, would load on a Sunday out of the docks for East Kent Packers with cape fruit and run them down on the Monday, off load and then straight back to Southampton have a bit of scoff and an hours kip then shoot round to meet the French boys and transship the cauliflowers on the wast ground what later was Lorraine, thoughs were the days, bet you remember these days Tony.and a few others on here,
Hi Bev, yep there will be loads on here that used to do the Cape fruit out of the docks mate.
I did it when on for Lucketts, Smiths and also Fred Croucher…it seemed a lot harder work when doing it for Fred…lol
Went through loads of matches in those days, to keep the eyelids open…those that did it will know what that was like.
I think that working like that back then was accepted as the norm back then, cant imagine that todays drivers would
last long at it…Re the cauli loads, i only ever loaded those out of Pompey, and in later years from St Jean De Pol in Brittany
that i delivered to Munich, before loading from Holland for Spain…that was in the early days of fridge work for Buzzer…
